Outside of a few minor differences, most gimbals, lights, cameras, and any other film equipment are all pretty similar. So it’s very refreshing when a company comes along that is at least trying to do something different. In the lens world, that’s Laowa, with there very unique and often strange lenses. For cameras, it’s DJI, who made a camera system unlike anything else we’ve seen with the Ronin 4D. Anamorphic lenses are one of cinema's most fun, useful, and unique tools. In the past few years, there has been a boom in the anamorphic lens arena, with new players like Atlas taking the cinema world by storm. Atlas' Orion series has lensed some huge Hollywood films, such as "Babylon" and "Don't Look Up". With lens makers Laowa and DZOFilm entering the (somewhat) affordable anamorphic arena, competition is growing fierce. Even in the documentary space, I have been asked to explore the potential of using anamorphic lenses on future shoots. I have use Laowa's Proteus (review coming soon) and Nanomorphs, as well as the Orions on a recent commercial shoot. But the ones that I am most intrigued by is the new series from Atlas: The Atlas Mercury 1.5x Anamorphics. Their compact size, full-frame coverage, and unique characteristics make them a tempting offer. I pre-ordered the lenses more than a year ago and now have them in my hand. When I decided I wanted to make films, I was already in my mid-20s and had already spent plenty of time in the classroom. So the idea of going back to school for three years (and spending quite a bit of money to do so), didn't sound all that appealing. So I decided to teach myself how to shoot and make films.
