30 Days in Sweden & Denmark - Shot on BMPCC6K & Helios 44-2 Test Footage
Beginning of this year, we decided to go on a month long trip to somewhere in Scandinavia. I've always wanted to visit and see the stunning nature out there. Freelancing is typically slower in the beginning of the year here in the US, so we decided to do a Workaway where you basically help a host anywhere in the world with their project(i.e. sustainable farming, renovations, house sitting, art projects, etc.)and get free lodging in exchange. This way we were able to travel and explore Sweden without breaking the bank. All of this footage was shot on my Blackmagic Pocket 6K and majority of the clips were shot on my Helios 44-2 58mm lens which gave all my shadows an orange undertone. There's also a 1/8 of black promist filter. The video was edited and color graded in Resolve. 🙏🏼 If you enjoy watching this video, like and subscribe! Because there’s always other things that could be cool to have but don’t necessarily need like a drone. I had one for 3 years and I used my like 15 times. I think the problem is that people don’t take enough time to learn how to shoot handheld. I’m not antigimbal. I think gimbals are amazing, I have one the use for most of my shoots but before I considered buying a gimbal, I had multiple shoots where I got to hone in on my handheld shooting skills. FOLLOW/WRAP - This move especially good when you have a big landscape or location to show off while your shooting. CRANE MOVE - Going from higher point of view to an eye level POV. LOW TO HIGH - so for this move, you have to throw your gimbal into suitcase mode. TILT/PAN/WRAP - This move is good when you have a big structure that you want to show off such a a building, landscape, interiors of a house, or maybe a concert. PUSH/BARREL ROLE- moving towards your subject and doing a barrel roll. PUSH THROUGH AN ELEMENT - So find an object with an big enough opening to where your camera can fit through. SHALLOW FOCUS PULL - Not a super difficult move to pull off, but landing this is difficult. The trick with all of these gimbal moves is to, especially shooting on a pocket , pull focus while you’re moving. If you can afford it, hire a focus puller. It’ll save your butt. OR use a camera with really good autofocus. So there you go, those are our top 7 gimbal moves. If you’re filmmaker, I’ve got a link attached below. When I used to have my Sony A7Sii, I could shoot slow mo only in 1080p and that’s just didn’t cut if for me. I definitely over used my slow mo mode on the camera because I just love how it all turned out. So should be shooting/filming in 24FPS or 60FPS? When's it appropriate to shoot slow mo? Here are my thoughts on shooting in 24FPS vs 60FPS. 🙏🏼 If you enjoy watching this video, like and subscribe! _______________ Website: https://www.mikamatinazad.com Free Assets for Filmmakers: https://mikamatinazad.com/store Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mikamatinazad For footage licensing, please visit: https://www.filmsupply.com/filmmakers/Mika%20Matin/577 Best Stabilizer for iPhone: https://amzn.to/3iivccU Best lenses for the iPhone: https://amzn.to/3F2UZzC My 6K Pocket Camera: https://amzn.to/2YaBu7w My 4K Pocket Camera: https://amzn.to/2ZyDsyK Sigma 18-35: https://amzn.to/3F1YyG4 Sigma 50-100: https://amzn.to/3CVCsTR Pro-Mist Filter: https://amzn.to/2ZJMQQk The Best Cage: https://amzn.to/3zSHzST The BEST gimbal: https://amzn.to/3ojoyqz The SAFEST Camera Case: https://amzn.to/3kRceeU #filmmaking #60fps #filmingslowmotion

PRIME LUTS VOL. 2
Now available at: https://mikamatinazad.com/primelutsvol2 After releasing Prime LUTs Vol. 1, I was instantly inspired by many films and music videos that were released shortly (1917, Joker, Jojo Rabbit, The Irishman, etc.) and I wanted to explore creating similar looks. The goal for this LUT pack is to give your videos the tone they deserve without sacrificing the true colors of your footage. Over the years, I’ve had trouble finding LUTs that work with the color profiles I’ve been shooting on (Blackmagic Raw, V-Log, Slog-3, C-Log, R3D, Log-C), so I decided to create a series of LUTs that I actually use for all my videos that have been shot on multiple cameras. I encourage you to use these after a primary grade has been applied to your footage. Once color grade has been applied, load in your Prime LUTs and choose your desired look. 12 LUTs designed to deliver results no matter what type of camera you shoot on. ____ Website: https://www.mikamatinazad.com Free Assets for Filmmakers: https://mikamatinazad.com/store Prime LUTs Vol. 1: https://mikamatinazad.com/primelutsvol1 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mikamatinazad For footage licensing, please visit: https://www.filmsupply.com/filmmakers/Mika%20Matin/577

Today I wanna talk about 5 things that EVERY filmmaker needs to have in order to shoot better music videos. These days technology is rapidly changing every few months, where you can buy an affordable camera that shoots 4k or 6k or who knows 8k probably in like a year. But I want to go through 5 things every filmmaker should have for music videos. Some of these things are a little more expensive than others so it doesn’t mean that you should go to the store right now and buy it. You may have to save up for some of them, and for some other things you can go to amazon or b&h right now to purchase. You do some jobs and invest in better gear, and repeat. Things that I recommend you buying are things that you could be using on potentially every music video. And these are also things that I use on almost every music video shoot. First off is a camera stabilizer. You need something like a 3-axis gimbal or glidecam so that your footage is shaky. One the biggest giveaways that your video was shot on a really tight budget is shaky footage. It immediately brings your production quality down. Keep in mind shakey is a different look than handheld. Handheld camera movement can be intentional but shaky footage is shaky footage. A lot of digital DSLRs these days have this type of jittery shake that you get form shooting handheld. Now there are many instances that shooting handheld fits the story or the concept that you’re shooting, but solid stabilized shots bring up the value of production. Next up you need to invest in some good lights. LED lights are becoming more affordable than ever, luckily you don’t have to save up for a $6000 sky panel. One of my favorite go to lights has been the Colorspike. It’s a super versatile light that’s battery powered and is easy to travel with. It’s super bright and has vibrant colors. It’s portable, meaning its got an internal battery, so you can use to light any scene or location. This way you can tweak the light while you’re looking at the camera screen. These lights also have a high CRI value which means that the colors your camera capture isn’t going to be skewed too much. You can even buy $15 color changing LED strip lights that are fairly bright. Don’t get too caught up in what type of lights to buy, but what’s most important at the end of the day is how you light your subject. TWO tips that I’d give when it comes to lighting the artist is either throwing a light above the subject or doing one key light from the side and on back light to help separate them from the background. I’m going to go through some different lighting techniques in the next week or two that’ll hopefully be helpful to you. Invest in some lens filters. I have used filters on a countless number of music videos because I’ve just always loved trying create in camera effects. Using filters can also up your production or just simply show that you care about making the music video entertaining and creative. Lens filters are fairly affordable and very easy to use. You can either screw them onto your lenses or buy 4x5 filters that you can use on your matte box. A great place to get lens filters is on PrismLensFx. Next is to invest in a haze machine. Haze machines do an incredible job adding a cinematic look to your image. It helps soften up the space you’re shooting in and also helps show where your light sources are coming from. Haze helps soften the image and is generally feels thinner than fog. Fog is a little bit heavier and it usually stays in one area. You see a lot of haze being use in narrative films but they’re also used in most music videos. Consider investing in a VHS(low-res camcorder) or 8mm camera. I’m a big fan using multiple types of media in music videos. This includes using other cameras such low-res camcorders or an 8mm camera. These types of cameras just add another dimension to your video because it gives a different look and quality. IF you can’t afford to buy an 8mm camera, then you gotta visit my website and grab his 8mm Grain and Textures pack.

My brand new BMPCC 6K that came in the mail a couple days ago. I can’t tell you how incredibly excited I am to use this camera. So this camera came in last week and I decided to take a week and just shoot a ton of broll with it. As a filmmaker, I’ve just always been interested in blackmagic products. I don’t know how you can such an amazing camera for the price that it costs. Anytime I’ve shot with a pocket, I’ve always loved the look of the footage. I think they’re products are very innovative. When they announced this camera last year, I became instantly interested. it’s got an arri alexa look, huge touch screen, 13 stops of dynamic range, super lightweight, dual ISO, user interface is simple and their colors are amazing. The results have been fantastic, so I thought “maybe I should switch teams from sony to blackmagic” and see what happens. There’s definitely a ton of downsides to this camera for sure such as not having good AF, not being able to tilt the back screen, and battery life. For battery life, I have this LP-E6 battery that’ll last you about 30 seconds of shooting, but I got this v-mount that powers the camera for a full day. You can shoot on SSD, CFAST, or SD card. I’ve been shooting with an sd card right now because I mainly shoot with ProRes codec just because it doesn’t take up a ton space and it’s really easy to color. Some of the add on I’ve gotten for this camera are tilta cage, SSD holder, v-mount battery, and pro mist filter. This camera could sometimes be a pain to use because I like to use the ronin-s for my shoots, so I’d have to strip this down and balance it, and then shoot with it. #BMPCC6K #Blackmagiccinema6K #Blackmagic

Thank you for taking time to watch this today. Before I jump into this topic, I wanted to gift you guys some free filmmaking assets that I have linked down below, so check that out. So is it possible to shoot a decent music video only using your iPhone? With all the new camera bodies out there that are becoming more affordable than ever, are we at a point with phone technology to do professional shoots with an iPhone? My answer to this is an absolute YES. In fact, I actually had to do this on a recent music video project. As a DP, I was given the task of shooting and lighting an entire performance music video with an iPhone 11. When I first read this on the brief, I almost had a panic attack because I got so worried that this was going to look horrible. I’ve worked on projects with iPhone footage in the past and it’s just incredibly difficult to color or tweak footage that comes out of it. But after this experience, I was convinced that it’s possible. I mean look at all the more recent Apple commercials that are entirely shot on the iPhone. They look really well done, granted those commercials are shot with commercial budgets not with music video budgets. It’s like comparing a great dane to a chihuahua. So in oder to shoot a good quality music video on the iPhone you’re going to need these five things, give or take. Is it possible to do it without these items, yes totally, but these items will increase your production value by ten folds. #1 - Pick the right phone app Moment has a great app where you’re able to tweak your settings such frame rate, recording format, exposure and ISO. You can even switch to manual focus mode and utilize that to do reveals and highlight other parts of your frame. Lighting is essential. Don’t over expose or under expose anything because it’s not recoverable with the 8-bit depth. Make sure to have Zebra on. Match WB to the setting.I like using the moment app over filmic pro. User interface is better, and everything I need to do in FiLMiC Pro is on the moment app as well. #2 - stabilizer iPhones in body image stabilization isn’t quite there and it’s just wobbly with certain movements so I used the my Ronin-S with the iPhone. Now there are tons of other phone stabilizers that I could’ve used by I just felt the most comfortable with the Ronin-s and the phone just worked great. Extra tip: get an iPhone tripod mount #3 - Lenses The iPhone camera lens is pretty good but I wanted to take it a step further I used moment lenses. Moment has a ton of incredible phone lenses that are all game changers. I used tele 58mm as well as their anamorphic lens and I actually ended up liking the 58mm a ton. #4 - Haze Haze adds a cinematic texture to your video and it’ll just add production value to your project. #5 - RGB lights iPhone doesn’t always register skin tones the best, but it does great with colors. Make sure to keep your WB consistent and all your colors should turnout great If you have all of these five components when you’re shooting the music video with an iPhone, your video will turn out surprisingly better than you thought. As technology progresses, things like shooting projects with your iPhone and editing entirely on your iPad will become a norm in the next few years. Overall, I loved how this music video for Love You Later turned out and hope that this inspires you to go and make your own iPhone music video. What are your initial thoughts with shooting a music video on the iPhone. Are you afraid? Or have you sworn to never touch an iPhone because your friends are going to beat up if they see you shooting on it? Comment your thoughts below. As always thanks for watching. Make sure to grab these free assets and I’ll see you guys soon.

K.S. Rhoads - CHESS (Official Music Video)
Directed by Sophia Lauer Shot and Edited by Mika Matinazad Acting by Josiah Edwards ___ For this music video, I got to shoot on a Canon C300 Mk II and GH5s. All the locked off shots were on the C300 and all other moving shots were between C300 handheld or GH5s on a Ronin-S. Some shots we had to have Kevin driving the car while I shot from the back of the trunk. For aerial shots, I used my DJI Mavic Pro. With lighting, I tried to utilize natural light around and try to not shy away from it. There’s only two and three setups that required a Sky Panel to be set up. And don’t forget about haze. Sophia did an amazing job directing our actor, Josiah, and guiding his actions and facial expressions in every scene. Josiah was such a champ especially since he had to run multiple miles over the two day shoot. In total, we had about 10 set ups for the whole music video, and we shot mainly around downtown Nashville area over two days. This project was edited in Premiere, and colored with my LUT pack. 10 Money Saving Tips for Creatives
Website: https://www.mikamatinazad.com Free Assets for Filmmakers: https://mikamatinazad.com/store Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mikamatinazad For footage licensing, please visit: https://www.filmsupply.com/filmmakers/Mika%20Matin/577 ____ Hello! It is time to talk about one of my favorite topics in the world, angora bunnies. No! I’m kind of kidding. We’re here to talk about saving! Woot Woot woot! These are some ideas for you to consider when it comes to saving money! You may know some them, some of these are obvious, but hopefully some of them will be new to you so that you can save a little bit of extra cash, invest it, and hopefully it can lead to more financial freedom in your life. So let’s jump straight in: Eat before you actually go out. This one is a little obvious but with this tips, you’d probably end up spending less when you go out with friends to eat. Buy secondhand or refurbished. My computer right here was purchased second hand. I bought it form apple’s refurbished website(https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished) where you can save a couple of hundred bucks purchasing refurbished items that works just as good as the new product. I’ve also purchased most of my camera gear second hand such as my Sony A7S II, lenses, Smallhd screen, and lights. I’ve been able to save a ton from just doing this. Meal prep. A lot of people when they come home from work, they just feel super tired and don’t feel like cooking an entire meal. I mean don’t get me wrong I enjoy cooking but I don’t always feel like starting the whole cooking process when I feel tired. This is where meal prepping comes in handy. So when you go to the grocery store, just buy a couple of extra ingredients that you can use to cook a couple of extra meals for your week. Wait before buying. When you’re about to make an impulse purchase, stop yourself, and ask do you really really need this. Does this add any value to your life? And this is especially for expensive items! What I recommend is making yourself wait AT LEAST 24-48 hours before making that decision. Drive less. All I’m talking about is to try not to use your car as much. Are you having to spend a ton of cash on gas every single week? Is there public transportation available in your city? Buy in bulk. When you buy things in bulk, the cost per unit goes down. If there are things that you tend to spend a lot of money on such as rice, beans, toilet paper, paper towels, and toothpaste then it’s best to buy them in bulk this way your cost per item goes way down. Declutter your stuff. Marie Kondo your life baby! Dig around your room, garage, and attic and start to get rid of stuff that you haven’t used in the past year or two. Bargain. Duh Mika that’s obvious. But I hope that this is a good reminder for you. Try not to pay the full price for anything unless it’s your only option. Renegotiate your bills. Now this isn’t something that you can do with every single bill but I’ve been able to do this my internet bill. Educate yourself through reading books, blogs, and watching videos of what’s worked for other people and how you could apply those methods to your life. Obviously there are thousands of ways that you could be saving money at this moment but most of the ways that I’ve discovered have been through just researching and also asking my friends what’s worked for them.

All of this footage has been stock piled into dozens of hard drives, and I finally had to do something with it. One of the pros of owning a production company and being self-employed is that you own most of the footage that you shoot. And what does this mean? It means that you can license it! As I started to shoot more videos, I’ve gotten inquiries from companies who had seen my videos or my reel and asked to license some of my footage for one of their commercials. For example, I directed and shot this music video for an artist named BIEN and was later asked by tis watch company called Rado to license a five-second clip from the music video. So the music video was mainly a passion project that I submitted to a film festival and ended up wining two awards for. I put my own time and money into the project but wasn’t paid for it. With licensing that one 5-second clip I was paid a whopping $225 which I was super stoked about. Ever since then I’ve tried to keep stock footage as a focus point whenever I shoot music videos for artists or promos for other brands. I make sure that the content I shoot can potentially be used in other commercials that maybe a watch company or sports brand can use. On thing to keep in mind is you gotta make sure to always keep a copy of all the footage and maintain ownership of the projects. There are lots of businesses and companies out there that are always in need of stock footage because they don’t want to hire out a full production company to shoot that content for them. Rather just go to a website like Filmsupply and license a few clips from them. And how do people find out about all that beautiful footage that you’ve carefully crafted? Post your work! Post the music video or content that you shoot on social media, Vimeo or Youtube and just let people know in the captions that the clips from the project are available for licensing. Also keep in mind that most companies won’t even consider licensing your footage unless it’s shot in 4k minimum. 4k is just the standard that we work with right now, so if you’re camera doesn’t shoot 4k maybe wait til you’re able to upgrade to a camera that does shoot 4k. BUT who am I to tell you what works and what doesn’t. If you’re 480p clips of a monkey eating spaghetti sells on a stock website that more power to you. You have earned my respect and support. Another tip to selling stock footage is that there are actually a lot of stock websites out there that can hold and manage your footage, and get a cut of every clip that they sell for you. For example, I currently have my projects up on Filmsupply and they help me out with taking care of hosting, keyboarding, and color grading some of my footage, and in exchange they take a fair cut of my commissions. So from my stock footage sales, I’d say that I make about $200-300/month split between selling my own footage and having my clips on Filmsupply. Licensing my footage doesn’t make up for my entire income being a freelancer but it helps me take care of some of my bills every month which is super nice! Shooting stock is a good way of thinking ahead about future projects, because you can plan on making some passive income from the things you shoot. Selling stock is an AMAZING way to make extra income as a filmmaker. For most filmmakers, they upload like 50 or 100 clips, wait a month or two, and then give up cuz they didn’t make any money. But you have to keep going. You gotta keep growing your stock portfolio. You gotta keep keyboarding right (super important). And you gotta keep shooting.
Advice to My 18 Year Old Self

There’s definitely things I wish I had a grasp on when I was younger, things that could’ve helped me up my game. There’s over a thousand pieces of advice that I could cover such as not making people hold like buttons in photos but here’s the top five. When I was at the age of 18, I was still living with my parents in the suburbs of Nashville, TN. I had recently just gotten my first iPhone 5, my first iphone ever, I had never had a smartphone phone before cuz my family just couldn’t afford it. I saved up $750, a crazy amount of money to me, to buy this freaking thing. Before this, I used to take photos on my dad’s iPad. Please don’t scroll down to the bottom of my instagram. During this time I had started attending college meanwhile working at The Escape Game at nights to help pay for my tuition and expenses. I don’t come from a well off family. I had chosen to study programming in school, which it didn’t last long for me, but photography had my attention. This was around the time all those #VSCOCAM was booming. Instameets were happening regularly where you could meet that one famous photographer in your city that you really looked up to. The algorithm was in your favor where you’d get more likes and comments on your posts but meanwhile I didn’t really know how to make money from being photographer. I mean I knew how much people charged to photoshoots but I was like how to do you make a living from that. With all that said, here' are my five pieces of advice: Master Your Mental Game. If everyone took care of themselves emotionally and were more emotionally self aware, the world would be a much better place. There’d be more growth, people would treat each other better, there’d be less violence and all negative things happening in our world today. Even younger before 18. Understand what holds you back, how you treat people and how you value yourself. That’s huge thing. Not saying that it can all be solved. I mean I still deal with a lot of those things today, but it’s good to be self-aware. Be Grateful. We have so much to be thankful for. The more privileged we are as a society the easier it becomes to take things for granted such as food, housing, air conditioning, and clean water. I didn’t grow up wealthy at all but I was always provided for by my parents. I grew up living and traveling in different countries in Asia and I got to see what poverty really looks like. It shape shifted my perspective on life. From having lived in countries like India and Philippines, where most people are having to live off of what we spend on a meal here in the US. When you do see that first hand, you realize how blessed and provided for you are. This also makes me be grateful for where I live and the opportunity to work hard and make a career out of job we can think of. Opportunities that most people unfortunately don’t have in developing third world countries. Interning. I didn’t really quite understand the importance of interning. I wished I had spent more time learning from the people I looked up to in the photography community. At 17 or 18, interning for someone that I admired would’ve helped me grow creatively. Adding value to that world and the people in it would’ve helped me learn some lessons that I didn’t till recently. Entitlement Won’t Get Your Anywhere. It’s not going to get you anywhere. Hard work and kindness will. So many kids these days think that they know everything once they’re out of school or that someone owes them something. That doesn’t work really especially in the creative world. I definitely had a sense of entitlement when I got on Instagram’s suggested list I thought I was this big shot who knew it all and had it figured out, but I didn’t really know anything. I didn’t want to go work for anyone else, but now that I look back I wish I had more of a balance between working for myself and also receiving mentorship. I think there’s something to mastering your craft, continuous learning and not having a sense of entitlement. Give More. I would’ve challenged myself to give more and be more active in donating my time, not only with my photo and video business, but just being a helping hand. I remember that once I got out of high school I became so caught up in working hard and focusing on my studies that I never made time to volunteer or give to charity. When you give more, you grow more. Living as a creative is challenging. It’s feast or famine. Security isn’t always consistent. If you have little, then give little. #advicefor18yearolds #whattodoaftergraduating
How I bought My First Property at 22 years old
So before I get into the aspects of saving of money for your first house, there’s a couple of steps that you gotta follow first. Good credit score. Ideally you’d want to have a score of 740 or higher to get the best rate possible. If you go 720 or less, you end getting charged more interests which is a no no! If you get more interest, the deal becomes more expensive and that eats into your profit margins. Two years of tax returns. Now some lenders don’t always need two years of tax return but this mainly depends on your job and if you’re W2 or 1099 or self-employed in my case. The whole point of this is they wanna make sure that your income in consistent. They wanna make sure that you didn’t an amazing year two years ago and then last you made no money. And this should be super helpful to you because if you’re planning on buying real estate in the next two years, then you can start planning for that. What lenders look at is your net income after all. They don’t add all your deductibles to your net, so if you do wanna buy in the next two years it may be a good idea to show as much income as possible. Bank statements. They’re gonna wanna see the last 2-6 months of your bank statements. Only to check where money is coming in and going out. Or if they see a lot money coming out of your account every day and “insert funny addiction”. The whole to track where your money is going and coming from. Banks also like to do this to make sure that no ones feeding you money like if your parents are “employing” you every month and giving you $10k a month. Banks wanna make sure that the money you’re making is recurring and stable. This is also goes to show that if you’re earring $8k a month that you’re not spending $12k a month. Cash reserve. Another thing a bank would possibly want to see is 2-6 months of cash reserves. This is to make sure that you don’t just buy this deal and then the next month you’re having foreclose on your house. If you wanna buy real estate, you’ll wanna put some money down. Banks like to see that you risk your own money on the deal. And the initial money that you put down gives you your equity in the property. Traditionally 20% down. But there are options out there where you can put 3%-15%. The downpayment is supposed to give banks cushion in the event that if your property foreclosed, you’d take whatever percentage you put down as a loss. Now if you were to pay less 20% down on your property, you’re gonna have to pay a little something called PMI. Private Mortgage Insurance. Having PMI on your loan doesn’t mean that it’s the end of the world. Unfortunately it doesn’t go into your equity and most times your able to pay it in full whenever you can. IF you’re confident that market is going continue to grow, it might be worth to jump into the deal as apposed to purchasing later. If you do accepted to close on 3.5% or 5% then freaking congrats to you. Go for it. Own it. Make saving a priority. You’re gonna have to downscale your expenses and hold back from buying oat milk lavender iced lattes. This is why banks wanna see your statements, how much you’re making or spending. Anytime it comes to savings, the best and biggest thing you can do is track you’re finances. You gotta know what $$ is going out and what’s coming in. The best way people end up saving money is discovering little tiny expenses that add up over time and can equal a ton of $$ you could’ve saved. Automate your savings. The money is automatically saved into your bank account so it doesn’t even touch your checking account. This is the best way to save money! When it comes to saving, it’s all about cutting back on things that you really don’t need as much as possible. This is how I was able to do it. I lived at my parents house the first three years of college, and I’d take most of income and stash it into my savings. Live below your means so you can get the thing you want which is a house in this case. For the ones saying I can’t do it I can’t save anything: Track your expenses on Mint You should be able to find things that you can cut back on you need to earn more money. there’s no way to sugarcoat it. the truth is that you have to sacrifice a lot. you have to increase your income as much as you can and decrease your expenses as much as possible. It might be worth it to have part time job, side hustle, or expand your skills. If you do start to make more money, make sure that you don’t start spending more but to save the difference I do believe that if you want it bad enough, you’ll find a way to make it happen. Patience, dicipline, and consistency is worth it. Track your expenses. Save as much a you can. Delay gratification. Is it worth? Yes, it is so worth it. 5 Tips to Becoming a Full-time Filmmaker
Website: https://www.mikamatinazad.com Free Assets for Filmmakers: https://mikamatinazad.com/store Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mikamatinazad For footage licensing, please visit: https://www.filmsupply.com/filmmakers/Mika%20Matin/577 ___ Today I wanted to take sometime and talk about some tips of how you can make full-time living creating videos. This is a question that I always run into through Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, emails and just through in person conversations. People are wanting to know how to fully take on filmmaking and make a good living supporting themselves and hopefully their family down the road. I first started as a photographer back in high school when I discovered instagram and basically had some friends that were fully immersed in creating THE next big instagram photo that’s going to get likes. Through that I got to learn how to take photos on my iPhone and edit them through the VSCO app, then post on instagram. That led me to stealing my parents Canon SL1 and using the generic lens to take photos of everything. As I posted more photos more people noticed my work and I began to shoot for more brands and artists. So while I was majoring in programming, I started making videos my sophomore year in college. As I shot more videos and posted more of my work, my video business continued to grow. I knew that I didn’t want to be a programmer so I switched my major to film production and start taking more film courses. Now another querstion I get is film school worth it. Well, I’m flattered that you ask because I already have a video posted about and it’s right here. For me, where I learned the most and received the most experience was just by going out and shooting my own projects. So here are 5 pieces of advice that I can give you about making filmmaking or videography your full-time job: Shoot as much as you can. Don’t always get caught up in if the gig is paid or not. Just try to get your hands in as many projects as possible because the more you show your face and more you create, there’s a higher chance of you receiving more opportunities. Guys I’ve shot a ton of low budget projects in my time as a videographer, but my focus has been to grow my own reel and portfolio. You gotta put in your hours, not saying that I have put all my hours, I’m still putting my hours in. Most of my big projects have come through word of mouth and connections. It’s rarely been from a random person on social media. It’s always a friend of a friend who knew a friend that recommended me. Grow your connections. Have meetings with people that you want to work with. Even if it means you have to do some free work to establish trust. A lot of times the favor comes back around and you end up working on another job that pays. And it keeps growing. The more people of you and your work, the more work you’re going to get. Build a reel and your website. As a videographer or filmmaker, whichever means the most to you, you need to have a solid reel. Your reel is essentially a combination of your best projects. It’s a short snippet of all your portfolio. Now where do you put your reel on. Your freaking website you dingus! Make sure your website looks solid and professional because that’s where people are going to see the work that you’ve done. Reach out constantly. I’m preaching to myself RIGHT now. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been able to get work through just reaching out and letting people that I’m willing to work. If I met someone at some event or through a friend, I just sent them an email saying “Hey here’s my website, my reel, Let me know if you ever need help with any projects. it’d be great if we could work on something together! Also I’m broke and really need this opportunity. Please?” Maybe disregard the last part of that. Be efficient. Efficiency matters so much. Again preaching to the choir Mika! With every project you need to be efficient with pre production, production, or post. If you’re not being efficient, you will end up losing a client and they will not come back to you. I have made this mistake over and over again, and unfortunately very few people are willing to give you a second chance. Now if you are being professional and efficient, trust me clients will come back to you and give you more work. Just gotta be patient with the process. When you do a project, give it your all and get it right back to the client. Because if you produce something quicker and in better quality, guess who they’re going to go with. Not you. Just kidding. Of course you! They’ll go with you every time! Well I hope that this video has served its purpose for you guys. I’ve tried to sum up all my knowledge and give right to you. Work hard, make sure you get sleep and that you’re rested, and get back at it. If this blog has been helpful please share and also subscribe to my Youtube, it helps with the algorithm and getting it discovered! See you soon.

In this video, I’m gonna talk about how you can make money renting your own camera gear! Sometime ago, I was trying to look for ways to make money alternatively in the film/video production world than trading my time for MONEY. So I came across Sharegrid which is a gear rental website. It's blown up in major cities like LA and New York. So you go to the website, set up your profile, and upload photos of the different pieces of gear you have, and also set the rental price. So on my profile I have a bunch of different of pieces gear such as my Sony A7S II, lenses, lights, drone, etc. Why it’s so great is because it’s so easy to use, all your gear is protected and it’s insured. Over the last few weeks, I’ve made over $300 renting out my gear. This money that I didn’t have to make by going out, physically shoot, and trading my time for dollars. The Truth About Film School
Website: https://www.mikamatinazad.com Free Assets for Filmmakers: https://mikamatinazad.com/store Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mikamatinazad For footage licensing, please visit: https://www.filmsupply.com/filmmakers/Mika%20Matin/577 ___ What are the pros and cons of film school? Should you and should you not go to film school? Here are some thoughts from my experience. Pros Concentration - You pretty much spend the whole time focusing on the different aspects of film. you’re thrown in with a bunch of students, given deadlines, and pushed to make your own projects. you learn from your mistakes and also your classmates. You also watch a lot films in film school. these films you wouldn’t have been exposed if you had not gone to film school. Equipment - Another big benefit of going to school is access to equipment. this is equipment that you don’t have to purchase on your own, or rent from a production house. The biggest benefit is that you get to use the gear to shoot your own personal projects to create your own reel that’s going to help you get work once you are out. now depending on the school you go to, your equipment can be outdated. technology is growing rapidly and it’s challenging for school to try to keep up Relationships - Another benefit is the relationships that you get to build. you get to work alongside other students and build friendships that will hopefully bring you work in the future. Little bit of everything - If you’re unsure about what aspect of film you want to focus on, film school gives you the chance to learn a little bit about everything out there. Cons Pricey - Film school is expensive as freaking heck. With the rising cost of college tuition, it’s become harder for a lot of people to pay for school. Debt - Like I mentioned in the video above, US alone has over $1.6 trillion worth of school debt. School can cost anywhere between $10k-$50k a year, and if you or your family can’t afford to pay that tuition, maybe you should consider some other options. Degree - Getting a degree in film production is fairly useless. It’s not going to get you a job. It’s all about your connections and your portfolio. Now if you want to use your degree to get your masters or phd then yes it makes sense to maybe pursue further education. If you want to be a kickass DP, director, screenwriter, or editor, then you gotta do some kickass work! You have to be able to produce your own mark and prove that you got what it takes. That people can trust you with their money to create the films and videos they want you to. Today there are so many alternatives then going to film school. You don’t have to go to film school to be successful in the video production world. Alternatives Youtube Academy - You can learn almost anything on Youtube. Online Courses - There are so many courses out there that can give you just as good of an education. A great example is Masterclass.(www.masterclass.com). You should check it out! Seek Mentorship - Find people you look up to and try to learn as much from them as possible. Help them with whatever they need help with, because as they grow, you will too. Sets - Get on as many sets as possible. It’s simple. Do it! So for film school, I attended Lipscomb University here in Nashville. Lipscomb has one of the top film programs in the state of Tennessee. The program has it’s pros and cons, but I definitely did learn a lot. But I’d say the majority of the knowledge I’ve gained about video and film has come from experiences. It’s true. You get out of film school what you put into it. No one comes running after you with job offers once you graduate. All in all, it all comes down to what works best for you. Do you work better in a structured environment with deadlines? Are you able to afford film school? If you can’t afford it, look for scholarships. If not, please don’t get into a ton of school debt! There are so many resources out there to learn. If you enjoyed watching this video make sure you like and subscribe. Thanks for watching. See you soon. #cinematography #investing #entrepreneurship
