NYC Street Photography with the Helios 44-2
Spent a few days shooting street photography in New York City using the vintage Helios 44-2 lens — a unique piece of glass known for its swirly bokeh and unpredictable character. In this video, I share my experience with the lens, explore how it holds up shooting street in NYC, and also reflect on the challenge of balancing being a photographer on YouTube. I also tested out a new color grading workflow using the beta version of FilmVision Pro by @serr @serrtests, pushing the visuals in a new direction. Whether you're into vintage lenses, color grading, or just enjoy cinematic street photography, I hope you enjoy this one. Exploring Athens: Street Photography & Gritty Graffiti Trains
This video captures my week-long street photography trip in Athens, Greece in November 2024. Venturing beyond the typical tourist spots, I focused on the city's raw, unfiltered side—documenting it’s metro trains which are covered in graffiti, the chaotic energy of the city center, and the gritty yet iconic meat market. The photos featured in this video were taken in both September 2021 and November 2024, while almost all of the video footage was shot in 2024. Cinematic Reality: NYC | New York Street Photography
Introducing the second installment of Cinematic Reality, a short-film series highlighting my photography along with cinematic behind-the-scenes footage. This episode focuses on the streets of New York City. The footage and photos shown in this video were taken from 2019-2024, with most of it being shot in 2024. This film features most of what interests me while wandering the streets of New York. It explores multiple boroughs, the streets and the underground, day and night, rain and shine, through parades and fires, and so much more. I hope you enjoy this raw & gritty perspective that’s not the typical “cinematic New York” videos you might see elsewhere. If you enjoyed this video, I’d love for you to check out my new digital zine “Street Notes Vol. 2: NYC” that complements this film. Alongside high-resolution versions of all the photos featured in the film, Street Notes also includes ⬇ * A breakdown of the camera, lens, and settings used for each shot * The neighborhood/location of each photo * Behind-the-scenes insights, thoughts on the creative process, or context on specific photos, neighborhoods, or themes * Some bonus unseen photos not included in this film, alternate angles, or contact sheets Think of it as the director’s cut—a deeper dive into Cinematic Reality: NYC. Coney Island on 16mm Film | Shot on Bolex + Kodak Disposable Camera
This is a short film I made shooting Coney Island on 16mm film using my Bolex H16 Rex-5. I shot photos to alongside the footage using cheap Kodak disposable cameras to match the soft and nostalgic look of 16mm. Although overwhelming at times, I’m really happy how this turned out. You just can’t beat the colors and aesthetic of authentic 16mm. No matter how hard you try to digitally emulate it, nothing compares to the experience filming with the real thing. Modern Day Japan on a 2000’s Camcorder
I brought this 2000's JVC camcorder on our trip to Japan last year. I filmed a lot with it, but I never knew what to do with the footage. After assembling all of the video into a timeline and listening to some music, I ended up making this experimental short film. It’s amazing how this camera seems to subtract 20 years from whatever is recorded and throws everything back to the early 2000’s. I hope you enjoy this short film as much as I did putting it together. Stick around or skip ahead to the end to hear my thoughts about the camera along the Brooklyn waterfront. Film Photography in Red Hook, Brooklyn + Channel Update
In this video, I explore Red Hook in Brooklyn shooting 35mm film and looking for beauty in the mundane. Lately, I’ve been fascinated by making photos out of banal scenes and trying to make “something out of nothing.” This style of photography inspired me by master photographers such as William Eggleston, Stephen Shore, Ernst Haas, Fred Herzog, Harry Gruyaert, & many more. In addition to shooting around Red Hook, this video provides a bit of a channel/life update explaining where my thoughts stand regarding my photography and YouTube channel at the moment. 0:00 Intro 1:34 Inspiration 2:40 Seeing Things New 3:22 The Neighborhood 3:51 Shooting Pt. 1 5:18 Film & Gear 6:03 Shooting Pt. 2 7:23 Shooting Pt. 3 9:58 Shooting Pt. 4 11:51 Outro 12:27 Channel/Life Update Photo books mentioned in video: Harry Gruyaert: https://geni.us/WrFckG Fred Herzog - Modern Color: https://geni.us/hck08 Stephen Shore - Uncommon Places: https://geni.us/e1zWwm Ernst Haas - Color Correction (out of print): https://geni.us/CfFO Ernst Haas - New York in Color (alternative/cheaper): https://geni.us/UVSVQ William Eggleston - The Outlands (Full Set): https://geni.us/5MzBz William Eggleston - The Outlands (Selected Works): https://geni.us/J7K2yl Film Camera: Canon EOS 300 Lenses used: Canon EF 28mm & 40mm Film developed and Scanned by Picturehouse + thesmalldarkroom Film Stocks: Portra 400, Portra 800, & Ilford HP5+ Video Camera/Lens: Sony A1 with Voigtlander 28mm Ultron II Video edited and color graded with DaVinci Resolve Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/illkoncept Buy me a coffee (leave me a tip): https://buymeacoffee.com/illkoncept COMPLETE LIST OF MY GEAR: https://www.illkoncept.com/my-gear My Blog: https://www.illkoncept.com/blog/ All of this video’s music is from Musicbed. April Showers Bring May Flowers | Shot on 16mm Film | Bolex H16
This is my second 16mm short film called “April Showers Bring May Flowers.” It was shot entirely on 16mm motion-picture film using a Bolex H16 Rex-5, which has been converted to Super 16. This film highlights this year’s transition from April into May documenting the spring rain followed by the blossoming flowers in May. Along with the seasonal changes, I wanted to show the stark contrast between different aspects of the city. Not only do April showers literally bring May flowers, but figuratively the phrase can also be a subtle reminder that while some things may seem unpleasant (such as a rainy day or gritty parts of the city) they can also lead to enjoyment and be appreciated through a different perspective. Hope you enjoy it! Feel free to ask any questions in the comments, I will reply to all. Photographing the Subway with the Most Graffiti in the World | Bucharest
Inspired by a love for gritty NYC street photography from the 1970’s and 1980’s, I’ve always been fascinated by graffiti when exploring cities. Upon discovering photographs from masters like Bruce Davidson, Martha Cooper, and Richard Sandler, I quickly became obsessed with images documenting graffiti trains and the subway. Since New York eradicated graffiti from the trains in the early ‘90s, I haven’t been able to find anything else like it in the world. This all changed when I stumbled across a YouTube video from the metro system in Bucharest, Romania. I'm fairly confident that Bucharest has the most metro graffiti in the world. Enjoy this short film as I document the Bucharest trains and metro system inside and out. 0:00 Intro 0:15 NYC Inspiration 1:16 Bucharest 1:59 Graffiti Trains Exterior 3:45 Graffiti Trains Interior (B&W) 4:58 Final Montage Photos & Video shot on: Sony A1 & Sony RX100VII Lenses used: Sony Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 & RX100VII w/ built-in 24-200mm Video edited and color graded with DaVinci Resolve Photos edited with Adobe Lightroom COMPLETE LIST OF MY GEAR: https://www.illkoncept.com/my-gear My Blog: https://www.illkoncept.com/blog/ Archival Graffiti Train Footage (Clip 1): Steven Siegel https://youtu.be/VTkg7S_jM0Y?si=CeWXWRamUonaDuqy Archival Graffiti Train Footage (Clip 2): Vintage City Dreams https://youtu.be/mf5E3FDZ6rY?si=RSGGFSXWDHWJLCaj BTS footage (also in portraits towards the end) by my girlfriend Gabrielle: https://www.instagram.com/gaby.beaumont/ Try Musicbed today with this 14-day free trial with 3 free music licenses: https://fm.pxf.io/illkonceptfreetrial Music: Summer Kennedy - Legends Disguise produced by EDBA (Licensed): https://youtu.be/nqjVinfdWL4?si=3h2XdHn_2XMon_Cm Alexander Spit - Said the Joker to the Thief Check the full photo gallery on my website at: www.illkoncept.com/bucharest Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/illkoncept Buy me a coffee (leave me a tip): https://buymeacoffee.com/illkoncept #streetphotography #graffiti #subway #metro #youtubenewwave #cinematography Musicbed Sync ID: MB01AWBVK5WFP0H

My girlfriend and I briefly visited Paris in February; you just never seem to have enough time there. I didn't get as many good photos/videos that I had hoped for to make a longer video...but I didn't want these clips go to waste. Photographing the NYC Nostalgia Train: Instagram vs. Reality
In this video, I reflect on my time photographing the New York City nostalgia train during the 2023 holiday season. This train is from the 1930's and '40s and is put into service by the New York Transit Museum throughout the winter holiday season. It is a fun experience especially because many people come dressed true to the older time periods. Photographing this event can feel nostalgic or even like time traveling with a camera - if done right. This video shows a behind-the-scenes look of what you can expect when photographing the holiday train. Using a perspective often labeled as “instagram vs. reality," you can witness that what you see on social media isn’t always how it looks or feels in real life.
