LUMIX S1RII | TEST FOOTAGE
Real world test shots & sample footage. The Panasonic LUMIX S1R Mark 2 is here, and it’s epic. The latest addition to the S Series lineup and a much anticipated one at that. The rumours were really flying on this one! I’ve only had the camera since last week so I didn’t get a chance to produce anything specifically for the release this time. No time! But I did manage to pull it out on a couple of client shoots over the last few days. So I thought I’d share some real world test shots and sample footage that you might like to see. First impressions are super impressive. There’s a lot about this camera to like. 8.1K up to 30p. 5.9K 50/60p and C4K at 100/120p, full frame, and with no crop. Internal ProRes and ProRes RAW. 8.1K open gate is coming in a future firmware update. 14 stops of dynamic range, and a beautifully cinematic image straight out of the box. Not to mention 44MP stills and a whole host of improvements for both stills and video, right across the board. Is this this best hybrid camera ever made? More to come on this one, so stay tuned. TTArtisan 75mm F1.5 | A Modern Vintage with Swirly Bokeh!
A quick look at the 75mm T1.5 by TTArtisan, with my thoughts and some test footage. I don't really do lens reviews on this channel, but when this particular lens was announced, I was really interested to give it a try. Based on the iconic Zeiss Biotar design, the lens combines vintage aesthetics with modern manufacturing, and at an extremely budget price. If lenses with character, quirks and personality are your thing, you definitely want to check this one out. It's a great halfway house between vintage and modern lenses, and would sit well in any filmmaker's toolkit. And yes, it renders very interesting swirly bokeh! Thanks to TTArtisan for sending one over. All footage shot on the Panasonic LUMIX S5IIX. WHY WE CREATE
Wise words from one of the greatest creative minds to ever grace the planet, David Bowie. I believe the creative mindset is both a blessing and sometimes a curse. We’re always resisting a world that seems to constantly try to pull us in different directions. And not always the right ones. Speaking for myself, I know I’m often having to remind myself what made me start this filmmaking journey in the first place. The love of the craft 🖤 Tommy Rowe is a proud Musicbed Ambassador. The DJI Focus Pro
Testing out the Focus Pro system by @DJI As someone that’s never used camera based autofocus systems, always focusing manually and normally on manual lenses, I’ve always wanted to maintain full control over focus as a creative tool, just like any other setting or aspect of shooting. As awesome as in camera PDAF systems are getting, I’ve never liked the idea of handing control over to a camera to do for me and I’ve never really got on well with AF. However, when you’re running solo or in small teams as I often am, there are those times where assistance is necessary and I’m always interested in tech solutions that might just make things a little bit easier. The focus pro seems to work like magic. The LiDAR locks on, and sticks like shit, performing faster and more complex moves more accurately than I can on my own. The subject recognition works very well, and all the settings are adjustable. But most importantly for me, you still have full control over the focus using the wheel, and can override the autofocus at any moment. When you let go, it locks straight back onto the subject again instantly. This is awesome. The tactile feedback you get from the wheel feels very intuitive too. It integrates into the wider DJI ecosystem. The handle setup is super comfy when rigged up, and the focus motor itself is also better than any other I’ve ever used in the past. I use a lot of vintage lenses, with older and stiffer focus mechanisms, and motors I’ve used previously have sometimes struggled. The DJI motor is super powerful with stacks of torque and it handles all of my vintage lenses perfectly. I may have found my new run and gun focus solution! Tommy Rowe is a proud Musicbed Ambassador. THE FIRST SNOW | LUMIX S5IIX
Winter is here. Well, just about, it's technically still autumn. But we recently had our first snows of the season here in Devon, UK. We managed to get out to enjoy it for a bit. Our good mates the Bishops were working, and their two lads were off school, so we took them with us as they hadn't been sledging on the moors before. Dartmoor is a super special place in winter! The Fifth of November | LUMIX S5IIX Short Film
Remember, remember, the fifth of November! An experimental cinematic film from Guy Fawkes Night here in the UK. 419 years after the infamous Gunpowder Plot of 1605, the villagers of Ottery St Mary in Devon still carry out the famous 'Flaming Tar Barrels' tradition, every year on November the 5th. This year I went along to the tar barrels event which is just up the road from me. I took the LUMIX S5IIX with me, with just one lens, but had no plans to actually create anything from it this year. It's just one of those events that's super cool (if not incredibly challenging) to shoot. I love a bit of fire. It's a pretty mad event when you think about it. Thousands of people crammed into a small rural village, with people running around through the crowds with burning barrels of tar. You've got to keep your whits about you, as if you don't pay attention, you'll end up with a face full of fire (as you will see from this film). Gotta love Britain's historic traditions! Anyway a few days later, I found myself randomly watching the movie ‘V For Vendetta’ on TV. I'm personally not a big fan of comic book movie adaptions as a genre, but I’ve always liked that one. I feel it's aged rather well, and appears to become more relevant with each passing year. The character of 'V', superbly performed by Huge Weaving, is pretty iconic. As I watched the movie I found myself wondering; what would Guy Fawkes, Catesby and the other plotters make of modern society today? Especially so with the whole of Britain still celebrating the event many centuries later. What would they make of it all? I then remembered I had some footage from Tar Barrels sitting on a drive. So I thought it might be fun to stitch a stylised little film together, based around that concept, featuring some of the footage I captured at Tar Barrels. This was a really fun piece to get creative with. Part experimental film inspired by the movie ‘V For Vendetta’, part documentation of the awesome Tar Barrels event and wider November 5th celebrations here in the UK. Can you guess who's behind the mask!? Hope you enjoy it! Production stuff: All footage shot on the Panasonic LUMIX S5IIX, with the 75mm Sirui Saturn anamorphic lens. Recorded in ProRes 422 to SSD. I decided to go for a 35mm Kodak 2383 film emulation on this one, using Dehancer Pro. Music by Musicbed. Tommy Rowe is a proud Musicbed Ambassador. Epic Show at Chepstow Castle | LUMIX S5IIX & DJI Mavic 3
One epic night at Chepstow Castle for the @krisbarrasband sellout show. What a place for it, within the ruins of one of the oldest stone fortifications in Britain. Kris and the lads were on top form and this was up there with the very best of performances I’ve seen from them. Always a real pleasure getting to work with these guys, and great to work alongside my main man Tozey, and Deni B. Awesome night! Kris asked me to put together a little highlight film of the night, and I attempted to get across the energy in that space, which proved pretty impossible to do as it was quite simply another level. LED Light Show - Rowe Films
A few shots from a commercial production this week. The shoot was to obtain promo for an entertainment agency act which included some pretty cool LED shows. I thought I'd share a bit of test footage as it shows what Panasonic LUMIX cameras are capable of in low light conditions. Cameras used - LUMIX S5IIX, S5II, GH6 & GH5S Conditions were really pushing the limits of low light performance as the lighting was a massive balancing act to make sure the LED show was effective and not overpowered by light levels. The cameras performed brilliantly in what were very tricky conditions. Tommy Rowe is a proud Musicbed Ambassador. Take your films to the next level with music from Musicbed. FORCES THAT UNITE | LUMIX GH7
The Panasonic LUMIX GH7 is here, and it is absolutely phenomenal. For the announcement of this epic camera, I decided to create a short film with a poignant (and timely) message about the power of art and creativity to bring people together in times of conflict and crisis. With only 3 or 4 days to do it, it was tough but I'd wanted to put this piece together for some time. It's my little tribute to both the incredible talent I am blessed to have all around me, as well as a great man from across the pond, whose words couldn't be more apt today, more than 60 years later. My initial thoughts on the camera - The GH7 produces a truly beautiful image. The footage is genuinely stunning. It performed totally flawlessly during the production of this film and that's pretty much it in a nutshell. Could this be LUMIX’ best filmmaker's camera to date? I think it might be and look forward to getting to know it more. Production Info & Credits: Shot exclusively on the LUMIX GH7 in ProRes RAW. A huge, huge thank you to my friends and family that made this happen in such a short amount of time. We managed to plan, shoot, edit, score, and post the piece in just 3 or 4 days, and I have the people around me to thank for that. Bespoke score 'Stillness Speaks (Reimagined)' produced by CJ Rowe (AKA Life In Colour). Voiceover - White House Audio Collection, John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. A Christmas Commercial/Ad by Rowe Films
A feel good, Christmas themed commercial produced by Rowe Films for our good friends and their lush little business here in Devon, UK. David and Faye recently booked us to produce a promo/commercial for their shop, and with Xmas rapidly approaching, I suggested we make use of the festive period to put something warm and fuzzy together. They loved the pitch, so with time very much of the essence, we managed to smash this out in just a couple of days. We decided to focus the theme on community, because it's something that's important to them both, it's the time of year for it, and everybody needs a community around them. Hope you like it and as always, feel free to stick questions down below. Production Info: The film was shot on the Panasonic LUMIX S5IIX, in 5.9K ProRes RAW via the Atomos Ninja V+. Dave was good enough to allow me complete creative control, so I decided to shoot the piece anamorphic with a film emulation, for that lovely filmic look and feel. THE NEW 75MM SIRUI SATURN ANAMORPHIC
A test of the new 75mm Saturn T2.9 1.6x anamorphic lens by Sirui. I wanted to test the 50mm also, but no way was I going to expose my sensor in these conditions, with sand and sea spray blowing absolutely everywhere! I'll give the 50 a test soon, so stay tuned for that one. I'm very impressed by these new Saturn lenses. The 35mm, 50mm and 75mm make a great combo especially with the now constant 1.6x squeeze. A big improvement. In my opinion we're finally getting some proper anamorphic character from lenses at the budget end. If the anamorphic look is your thing, there's no doubt these lenses are incredible value. The neutral flares are great, nicely controlled, and the bokeh looks nice. The pin cushion distortion doesn't bother me all that much either. Great job on some cracking lenses Sirui! THE HOAX | LUMIX S5IIX + ATLAS MERCURY ANAMORPHIC LENSES
I was recently privileged to get my hands on a pre-release set of Mercury Series anamorphic lenses by Atlas Lens Co. With the release of the Panasonic S5IIX also happening, I wanted to pair them up. RECREATING 1917 | REAL MOVIE LOCATION
Recreating the iconic opening and ending sequences of 1917, at the actual locations used in the movie. I’ve actually been sat on this for over two years now, so I thought it was about time I put something together! When you work in video production full time, sometimes work takes over and you end up with less time for fun. I’ve always believed it’s important to make time to do things not just for clients, but also play time for YOU, in order to keep the flame burning and basically remind yourself what it is you love so much about filmmaking. When it comes to movies, I’m a proper geek, as this little thing aptly demonstrates. I love travelling to real movie locations and walking in the footsteps of those that inspire me. It's a fun thing to do. So back in April 2021 myself and my pals Alex and Sean took a trip to the actual location used to shoot both the opening and ending of the epic Universal Pictures movie, 1917. Having spent a pretty ridiculous amount of time trying to actually find the real location they used here in southern England, I managed to twist Alex and Sean’s arms into taking a trip to the lone tree, in order to do our own recreation of the iconic ending sequence. Armed with just a Panasonic BGH1 and Ronin gimbal, we tried to get as close as we could with what we had. Of course we'd never be able to replicate it frame for frame, but I'd be happy if we could get even remotely close to the world class cinematography seen in the movie. This was just a really fun day. A great experience, and I even learnt a thing or two, too. It also goes without saying but if you haven’t seen the movie ‘1917’ before, I highly recommend it. It is a genuine filmmaking and storytelling masterpiece. This content is a bit different for the Rowe Films channel, so if you enjoy it, please do let me know in the comments because I have other ideas, and would love to do more of it! LUMIX S5IIX - Official Launch Event | London
A few test shots & footage from the Panasonic Lumix S5 mark II X launch event in London, UK a couple of days ago. A huge thanks to Lumix for the invite and putting on an awesome event! Special shoutout to my man @JoshCameron who lost his bet. Sorry chap, better luck next time 😝 All shot on the brand new LUMIX S5II X. I didn't get too much footage on the night because, well, let's just say the drinks were flowing. First impressions; Super impressed with the low light performance, color, and dynamic range. The IBIS is fantastic too. This footage was all shot at the high native 4000ISO, and it came out super clean. Pretty impressive given the (very) dark venue used for the launch event. It turned out to be a very good test and it will make for a fantastic music video and live event camera, that's for sure. More to come on this one and something exciting lined up, so stay tuned! THE BEST Film Emulation For Filmmakers
Dehancer Pro is a cinematic film emulation plugin and color grading tool now available for Final Cut Pro X. Here’s my little review of the product, giving a general overview of it as well as my thoughts. I can highly recommend this one! As a filmmaker I’ve always been a lover of the analog film look. There’s something magical about it that’s hard to put your finger on, something that can sometimes be slightly lacking in the digital equivalent. This is how to get the film look! In my experience, Dehancer Pro is easily the most powerful film emulation and filmic colour grading tool that I’ve ever personally used. One plugin that gives you all the tools you could want or need to emulate a genuinely convincing and authentic ‘film look’ in your films and videos. The plugin includes features such as over 60 different film negatives, print emulation including the popular Kodak 2383, film compression, analog CMY color correction, grain, halation, bloom, vignette, gate weave, film breath, LUT export and more. When you pump your footage through this pipeline, it genuinely looks incredible. Without a doubt, this is the closest to the look of true analog film that I have ever been able to get with my own images. It’s genuinely fantastic that these powerful tools are now available from within Final Cut Pro. So if like me, you use Final Cut and like to emulate analog film characteristics in your digital video footage, you will definitely want to check this one out. A 'Stranger Things' Inspired Video For My Own Band! | LUMIX S5II + GH6
Something a bit different from me. Anyone that knows me personally knows that filmmaking aside, my other massive love/passion in life is music. I don't really make much of that side of me on this channel, but I've been in a covers band here in the UK now for over half of my life. I helped form this particular band when I was 15 years old, to be exact. Music has played a huge part in my life, even earlier than that, since I was just a wee lad. Prior to 2020, we were a band that did 60+ gigs and shows per year, so it was somewhat of a way of life for me. Pretty much every weekend, out with some of your best pals, having a laugh, drinking too much, but doing something you love doing productively and getting paid for it. Let's just say it ticked a lot of boxes for me, for many years, and I've missed it. After a bit of a hiatus, we've now built this band back from the ground up, and are finally ready to get back on the road again. It's taken a lot of time and effort from all involved, basically starting again, but I literally can't wait to get back behind the kit and performing live again. To coincide with the announcement of our return to live performances, we decided to produce a live performance video. Something a bit fun and not too serious, and something that would give those that follow us around here in England a little glimpse of what's to come in what will hopefully be a new chapter. Those that do know me personally also know that I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to film, TV series, movies etc. It all massively inspires my film work, as Im sure you know. I happen to be a big fan of the Netflix series 'Stranger Things' (beautiful filmmaking and I always love 80's vibes). When I heard them do a cinematic remix of Journey's 'Separate Ways' in the last season, I had an idea. That song is one of my favourite Journey tracks ever, so I proposed it to the lads. Thankfully they are top guys and extremely tolerant of my geeky ways, so they agreed to put our own spin on the track, inspired by Stranger Things. The 'cinematic' style intro you hear, I produced myself in Logic Pro X. Using digital instruments, I put together a backing piece with the same vibe as the Stranger Things remix of the track, and I would trigger that live, using the Roland SPD-SX. The rest of the track after the intro sequence, we perform fairly close to Journey's original, but in our own little way. Of course the band's video production falls in my lap, however it's pretty tricky to be both behind the kit and the cameras at the same time. So once again I called in the help of my good mate and fellow camera guy Alex Toze, to operate for me on the shoot. Video wise, I'm sure you will see some of the inspiration I've taken from the show. The titles were animated myself in Final Cut Pro. All in all, this was a really fun little project that combines my two loves in life, and I'm pretty happy with how it came out. The track was performed completely live (excluding the pre-produced intro soundscape I made) and recorded at Tazma Studios in Exeter, UK. As a bit of a side note this time (for a change), we shot all of this footage using both the Panasonic LUMIX S5II, GH6, and GH5S, side by side. As you can see, they work wonderfully together, and cut together beautifully. A fantastic little setup, and great for music video work. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this video and if you have any questions about the work that went into putting this together (there was quite a lot of it!), feel free to smash them in the comments. Oh. We do intend to do more stuff like this going forward and have some big ideas, so if that's your thing, and you'd like to follow the band, please do, that would be totally awesome; @eventineband Thanks guys! A CASTLE ON A HILL | DJI MAVIC 3 CLASSIC
Some test footage from my very first trip out with the DJI Mavic 3 Classic. Thanks to DJI for getting in touch! Stay tuned for more to come. This is just a very quick piece thrown together from my initial flight. My first impressions of this drone are....fantastic. Not only is the functionality incredible, but for me, we are now finally getting to the point where "the drone look" isn't so much of a thing anymore. The footage out of this camera looks generally incredible, and will match well with ground based cameras. Overall the colours, dynamic range, and feel of the footage have improved massively from previous models, and the price represents amazing value too. So these are my very first test shots captured with the Mavic 3 Classic. Myself and Mr Toze took a trip out early on a cold and foggy morning to a local spot that I love. Lawrence Castle in Devon, UK. A 17th century tower built atop of a hill, surrounded by forest. It's an epic spot that gets some awesome weather conditions. Perfect for giving this new drone a test run. THE ICE DAY | LUMIX S5II
A stylised, filmic short piece from a winter's day last month, here in the UK. Shot on the new LUMIX S5 mark II, I decided to take a heavily stylised approach to this little piece, in terms of the overall filmic look and heavy film grain emulation. Dare I say, "cinematic"? I also shot it all with one single lens, the vintage 35mm f/2 FD, which is a real beauty and probably my favourite lens that I personally own. Beautifully imperfect! All in all I’ve used a combination of things here that create a look that I personally love. Putting this piece together really helped me test out the new Panasonic camera fully, properly push it around a bit, and see what it's really capable of. I feel like with any new camera, it takes you a while to really get to know it. For me, I find I need to get out and shoot with it, numerous times, in the real world, and in a range of different conditions, before I can really pass judgement. That actually happens to be my only problem with many traditional "reviews", many of which are often limited to studios, with very limited time hands on, and yet findings are often presented as conclusive. That's just not the reality of my experience. Personally I feel like I've got to know the S5II quite well now, and what a great camera it is. Genuinely a fantastic all rounder. The images are beautiful, and so versatile. You really can push it around big time, as I have done in this film, and it holds up beautifully. The images are extremely clean, even in low light, so much so that I find myself actually wanting to rough it up a bit. But that's often the way with me! Anyway I hope you enjoy this little piece. Myself and my mate Mr Toze decided to take some time out and make the most of the wintry conditions by hitting Dartmoor for a hike. One of my favourite things to do. Also happened to provide great conditions to test the camera. Specifically dynamic range, as it was super harsh light and the light/colour changed literally every 30 seconds. Some info below. And as always, feel free to smash any questions in the comments. LUMIX S5 Mark II + Helios 44M
Just a quick one. Driving home yesterday through some local woods, the last of the day’s light was looking quite nice, and there’s no more of it on the cards here, for a while now, so I decided to pull over to catch the last of it. I had some gear with me, including the new LUMIX S5 Mark II so I thought I’d try it out with another vintage lens, this time the Helios 44M. I was on my own and didn’t have a subject to film, so I just had to use the van, otherwise, it’s just trees 😂! This was just a quick test before getting home for dinner, but I got some interesting results, so thought I’d drop some of the footage on here as a quick upload, in case anybody finds it interesting. One of my favourite things to do with any new camera is pair it up with different lens combinations, especially my vintage collection. You can get so many unique and interesting looks with old glass and its always good to see how different cameras handle the more vintage film look that results from using them. It's also sometimes nice to think that I might be the first, and only one to have tried this specific combination, so far. That way you never know what to expect! The Helios is a little diamond in the rough. I’m sure most of you know of it, but for those that don't its an old Soviet era lens that’s famous for it’s interesting character and swirly bokeh. For me, the best thing about vintage lenses is the unique looks you can get. Every single lens is different. Often technically imperfect, but with so much character. And character is what I'm all about. This is very different to what you usually get with many modern lenses, with their optical 'advancement' and superior coatings. Vintage lenses aren't suitable for all commercial work of course, but perfect for those times when you want to get a little more arty, which for me, is pretty often. Like. All the time. This particular lens cost me about 100 smackers all in, and thats including a few mods I’ve made such as an EF conversion, gears, 80mm cine ring, a clean and re-grease. For that money, it really is ridiculous what you’re getting and I recommend you pick one up if you’re interested in dipping your toe into the vintage lens world. If a stylised, characterful film-like look is your thing, this little lens is hard to beat. So I'm pleased to say the S5II + Helios combo works great. Lovely colour. The bokeh looks amazing too, very painterly, and to me its a stronger effect on the full frame sensor, as opposed to what you get with m43 cameras. Another thing I noticed is when the lens is opened right up, it doesn’t just flare wildly, but you also get an interesting light leak too. You don’t get this in the same way on m43 bodies. I reckon this could be quite aesthetically pleasing, used at the right time and in the right way! A nice little test. Hopefully more to come. Feel free to smash questions in the comments. Cheers! Camera: Panasonic LUMIX S5 Mark 2 Lens: Helios 44M 58mm f/2 Filter: Freewell VND Settings: C4K 24p, 10 bit 422, VLog Edited in FCPX and a quick grade using Dehancer Pro film emulation (more on this to come soon!). A New Year | LUMIX S5 Mark II
A few quick test shots/footage from the new Panasonic LUMIX S5 Mark 2. I didn't have time to produce anything more substantial this time, but I did manage to pick it up a couple of times over the holidays, so here's a quick one! All footage shot on the LUMIX S5ii, in Vlog, 24p and 60p. Edited in FCPX and graded with film emulation (video to come on this soon). Lenses wise, most of these shots were on the Canon FD 55mm f/1.2, because I'm all about the vintage look, with all of its character and imperfection. The reason I've always shot Panasonic Lumix, is because footage from their cameras always has character. A few shots at the beginning, everything up to 0:36, were on the Panasonic 20-60mm. Despite not really being my bag in terms of general look (modern, very sharp and clinical), I decided to include a few shots as I know many shooters like the clean and sharp, contemporary look. It is a great lens if that's your thing. I haven't had much hands on time with the camera yet, but here's my initial thoughts and feelings; Everything that was great about the original S5, plus more. Amazing image. Extremely versatile image quality, allowing you to dial in your look as desired. Fantastic dynamic range. Impressive low light performance. Very good IBIS with the new 'active' system. I need to play with this more to get my head around how it performs in different settings. Impressively small and light form factor for a body that has a full frame sensor crammed into it. Clever incorporation of a cooling fan in the EVF housing. No worries about overheating then. Auto Focus is not my thing as I prefer to focus manual lenses, however I did try it out. To my eyes, the new Phase Detect system performs extremely well. The shots at the beginning of the dancing and dogs were shot using human and animal tracking. It locked on and stayed with them. Despite not being a priority for me, I'm sure there will be lots of happy people out there. The big one for me is the price. It's a lot of camera for the money. The most important thing for me being image quality, which at this price point, is seriously top notch. Perhaps even unrivalled. So fair play to Panasonic for making such a fantastic product accessible to more people. I look forward to spending some more time with the camera and getting to know it better. As always, any questions, feel free to smash them in the comments. Oh, and happy new year everyone! 🤙 Tommy Rowe is a proud Musicbed Ambassador. A CELTIC LOVE STORY | LUMIX GH6
I haven't shared a wedding film for some time, so thought I'd drop this one! A couple of days before Christmas, I had the pleasure of shooting the Celtic inspired wedding of Lizzie, and fellow Cornishman, James, on the stunning Westcountry coast. As a chap with Celtic blood myself, this was right up my street. All the vibes! I don't shoot many weddings these days, but I've been thoroughly enjoying using the LUMIX GH6 on those that I have worked on. It really is the perfect wedding cinematography camera. For this film, I decided to go with a 2383 film emulation and generally filmic vibe, inspired by the good old days of cinema proper. A huge thanks to @XiomaraCrystal for allowing me to use her stunning track in this preview film. It really is perfect for what I needed. Check out her incredible talent here and please give her some love: https://www.youtube.com/@UCB63yRS4AUsSai1IjGR-3CQ All footage featured in this film was shot on the LUMIX GH6, and LUMIX GH5S. LUMIX GH6 | The Perfect Wedding Cinema Camera!
I don't shoot that many weddings these days, but I have done a handful since the release of the LUMIX GH6. So I thought I'd throw together a little montage of a few shots that I've captured during real wedding shoots, in case anyone would like to see how capable it really is. If there's any wedding filmmakers / cinematographers out there considering the GH6, all I can say is, it's pretty much perfect for weddings. So powerful, amazing imagery, and so much fun to use. No matter the conditions, it just performs. What more can you ask for? Any questions, feel free to smash them below. All footage shot on the LUMIX GH6 and recorded internally. Mostly 4K 60p 10 bit. THE STAGE | LUMIX GH6
A short film produced in collaboration with Panasonic LUMIX & Atomos, for the release of firmware V2.0 opening up ProRes RAW to the LUMIX GH6 and Atomos Ninja V / V+. Check out my online store for custom LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store Having been released only a few months ago, the GH6 was already a powerhouse of a camera with specs pretty much unrivalled at its price point. But now it just got even more powerful again. 4K 120p in 12 bit RAW? Give me some of that! One recent feature film release in particular has made waves in the world of cinematography and like many others, I found myself massively inspired by it from a visual and creative perspective. So it was a bit of inspiration for certain aspects of this piece, in terms of the cinematic approach, how it was shot, and certain cinematography techniques. More on that in the BTS! Kit and settings: Shot on the LUMIX GH6 and Atomos Ninja V+ Settings: 12 bit ProRes RAW - 5.7K 24p, 5.7K 60p, 4K DCI 120p Lenses: Mostly anamorphic with some shots captured using vintage spherical lenses (more on that in the BTS). Sirui Mars anamorphic set; 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm Other lenses used; Cine-modded 58mm Helios 44M, Canon FD 55mm f/1.2 & 35mm f/2 The combination of modern anamorphic lenses and vintage sphericals seemed to work for me. It was also my first time shooting anamorphic on the GH series cams, so that was a nice change. Graded this one manually based on the Kodak 2383 look, and then finished with FilmConvert Super 35 film grain. Written, shot and edited by Tommy Rowe. THE STORM | LUMIX GH6
Get 'The Storm' custom LUT by Rowe Films here: https://rowe-films.sellfy.store/p/the-storm/ Check out my latest film produced in collaboration with LUMIX here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJPyiJn3Vbs It's finally here! The highly anticipated Panasonic LUMIX GH6. Here is my short film produced for the official announcement. After attending the pre-disclosure event in London at the beginning of the month, I've now had my hands on the camera for a couple of weeks and used it to put together this short film. It was a real pleasure to be involved in the announcement and release of this one, so thanks for the guys at LUMIX for giving me a shout. As soon as it arrived a couple of weeks ago, I shot some test footage and could instantly see that this camera and I are going to get on very well. What a powerhouse the GH6 is. Genuinely fire. The footage has a beautifully cinematic quality, filmic character, everything that I love about the LUMIX look. But more to come on that... As is the nature of this kind of work, I only had a couple of weeks to come up with an idea, plan, shoot, edit and deliver, ready for the announcement tonight. Initially it didn't look like there was much in the way of good shooting conditions for the foreseeable. But then my brother, music for film composer Life In Colour happened to mention he had a new composition in the works, titled 'The Storm'. Low and behold, a matter of hours after we floated the idea, the UK received its first two named storms, both of them in the same week (we actually had a third last night). So, the stars aligned, and it was meant to be. The film was shot entirely on the GH6. We had to brave some brutal (if not slightly treacherous) conditions. In doing so, shooting this piece I have genuinely put the camera through the ultimate test. Storm force winds, torrential rain, hail, angry seas and sea spray by the tonne. Of course the GH6 took it all in its stride, and managed it like an absolute boss. Speaks for itself! It was a lot of fun to produce. Very wet. Very cold. Pretty miserable and borderline savage at times. Working in these conditions is seriously hard work. But fun all the same. Needless to say I'm impressed by the BS1H and Ninja, which together open up the power of Full Frame 5.9K 12 bit footage, in a RAW codec. Mega! One of the best things about this setup was the rigging possibilities. We even managed to rig the system onto an FPV drone platform, to create some seriously cool aerials. Shortly afterwards, the world turned upside down. During difficult times, Sean's release was his motorbike. This short film touches on his journey over the last couple of years. If you subscribe to my channel, you may well have seen Sean before, as a friend of mine and fellow LUMIX shooter himself, he has assisted me on various projects, including previous jobs with LUMIX and Atomos. I'm a big fan of his work and I'd like to say a huge thanks to him for allowing me to make this film all about him! I have a full 'Behind The Scenes' feature coming shortly, so keep an eye out for that. For now though, feel free to smash any questions in the comments. Shot entirely in 12 bit ProRes RAW, on the LUMIX BS1H and Atomos Ninja V. We went all out on this one and tried to step up the production value with some different tech solutions. Even going as far as mounting the setup on an FPV drone, taking the Ninja along for the ride. It required a custom build and a lot of fiddling to make it work. But as far as we're aware, it hasn't been done like this before, so that's cool. Pulling focus wirelessly from a drone was also a new experience for me, so that was fun! ROWE FILMS OFFICIAL CINEMATOGRAPHY REEL 2021
Here's the official Rowe Films cinematography showreel for 2021. Generally speaking I'm not a massive fan of reels, usually being little more than montages of random footage and pretty shots, and usually lacking in 'story' or narrative. It's tough to make it 'feel' something. So I tried to approach mine a little differently, to perhaps give it a bit more substance than just a montage. I dunno. But anyway, it's been a cracking year, and I've been blessed to take on some incredible projects. More to come of course and I'm hoping to add to this before the year is out, so watch this space 😉 Cheers Al! Voiceover by Alan Watts. 🔥 Like what you see? Commercial Product Film | LUMIX GH5S | Sharp's Brewery
Earlier in the year I was commissioned to produce some promo and advertising material for a new Sharp's Brewery product. Mostly for social media use. The project was called 'Cold River', and involved working underwater and also in the studio. It was fun and a nice change to work on something a bit different as I tend not to take on a huge amount of product videography work. So I thought I'd give it a share! Here's a couple of cuts. My own 'director's cut' and then the full length client deliverable follows immediately after. All footage was shot by myself in camera, no third party assets or stock footage. The brief was to focus on the elements and water - where the river meets the sea. So the imagery focused on quite abstract shots on location, and the edit needed to be dynamic. Quite a focus on sound design also. All the featured footage was shot in camera with no third party or stock assets used. Mostly on the LUMIX GH5S and BGH1, with a lot of the underwater work at 120 & 180 fps on the GH5S. There's a little bit of GH5 footage in there, and we also used a Sony FS7 for a couple of the studio shots. Oh and a Phantom 4 of course. I don't have any BTS stuff from this project unfortunately but as always questions welcome in the comments! 🔥 Like what you see? Is this the perfect Variable ND solution?
🔥 Like what you see? Check out my online store for custom LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store Thanks to Freewell for sending over their new magnetic variable ND filter system looked pretty innovative and I was interested to give it a try. Get yours here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/world-s-1st-versatile-magnetic-vnd-camera-filter/reft/13493183/rowefilms The Magnetic VND filter package is an all in one filter system that covers Variable Neutral Density, Circular Polariser and ‘Mist’ diffusion. There are lots of filter products on the market but this seems pretty unique in that it provides you with a solution for various filtration types, boasting 7 features and 20 different functions, plus its magnetic too. Personally I’ve always struggled with screw on ND filters. They can be fiddly and cumbersome, not to mention suffer with issues such as vignetting, colour shifts, and of course the dreaded X pattern. So how does this one stack up and is it something I will be making use of? Is this the best option out there for those that like to use screw on VND? In this video I provide my thoughts and provide some test footage. Full disclosure: Freewell did sent me the product for free, but they are not paying me for a review and will not be seeing it before posting. Panasonic Leica 25-50mm f/1.7 | Test Footage
🔥 Like what you see? Check out my online store for custom LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store Thanks to LUMIX for sending over a pre-production Panasonic Leica 25-50mm f/1.7 for me to try. This was a lens I was looking forward to getting my hands on. I managed to get out briefly yesterday for a mooch on the beach and brought it along with me to give it a test. It was a quick blast so I’ll try to put something more comprehensive together, but for now, I thought I’d share a bit of test footage and a few shots. My initial thoughts on the lens, in a nutshell: ✅ Perfect companion to the 10-25mm f/1.7 ✅ Very useful & versatile coverage at approx 50-100mm FF equivalent ✅ Smooth, clickless aperture ✅ Nice shallow DOF & compression at f/1.7 ✅ Very sharp and contemporary look ✅ Nicely controlled flaring ✅ Internal zoom that doesn’t extend ✅ Solid build quality and high quality feel ✅ Not heavy at all for what is a large unit ✅ Decent minimum focus at 0.92ft/28cm ✅ Minimal focus breathing 😬 Focus by wire, no hard stops, very short focus throw ❌ No IS, but really wasn’t needed with GH5 IBIS, even at 50mm Overall, the 10-25 paired with the 25-50 would be an amazing combo and you could even get away with using that as a two lens set up which could cover all bases. The 25-50 produces a very sharp, contemporary look, which is amazing if that’s your thing. 🔥 Like what you see? Check out my online store for custom colour grading LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store Shot on the LUMIX BGH1 & Atomos Ninja V in ProRes RAW. A quick video thrown together from a recent trip to Dartmoor. Myself and a few local photographers hiked out into the middle of nowhere to visit the house used in Steven Spielberg's 'War Horse'. This is the location they used for the farm in the movie. It looks a little different to how it looks in the film, as the production added a thatched roof etc which is all gone now. But even so it was really cool to see the location that was used for some of the key scenes. After that we hiked up to a nearby Prehistoric monument. A stone row and burial mounds from the Stone Age. Pretty cool stuff. I had the BGH1 and Ninja V with me, so decided to grab some shots. At this point I was still playing with ProRes RAW as a codec so it was a good little test. So instead of letting the shots go to waste, I did a quick cut and grade, and threw this little video together. For this short film, I decided to go for a filmic, vintage look, to really show the versatility of the set up and demonstrate what can be achieved. I decided to shoot it all on Canon FD vintage lenses, for that lovely character you just don’t get with modern glass. Finishing with FilmConvert, I’m a massive fan of that nostalgic cinema, film-like look. I hope you like the short. Do stay tuned for the BTS feature coming up in the next few days. Check out my online store for custom colour grading LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store The LUMIX BGH1 has slotted into my setup like a dream alongside the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, GH5S and GH5. If you'd like to know more about the production of this video, let me know in the comments! I recently shot this music video with the BGH1 as my primary camera, backed up by the BMPCC. At the time I didn't plan on using it as my main camera, but I was surprised how well the BGH1 footage matched the Blackmagic, and the box format works so well rigged up as a 'cinema camera' when shooting in a controlled environment. Colour Grading ProRes RAW | Tutorial & Walkthrough
🔥 Like what you see? Check out my online store for custom colour grading LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store Further to my last BTS video, here's how I colour graded the short film 'KERNOW', produced in partnership with Panasonic Lumix and Atomos, shot on the BGH1 & Ninja V, which now support ProRes RAW. This was my first time working with ProRes RAW footage, and it was an absolute dream. As someone who is used to working with normal ProRes codecs as well as Panasonic V-Log, I was surprised how familiar it felt, being able to quickly convert the RAW footage to V-Log/V-Gamut directly in the settings of Final Cut Pro X. Now I'm looking forward to doing more experimentation and working directly with the RAW footage, to see what results I can get without doing the Log conversion. It will be interesting to see if it changes my color grading workflow. The BGH1 produces a beautifully cinematic image, it's an absolute beast paired up with Ninja V and has slotted straight into my setup. 12 bit ProRes RAW, what more could you ask for? 'KERNOW' Behind The Scenes with LUMIX & Atomos | ProRes RAW
I recently produced the short film ‘KERNOW’ for Panasonic LUMIX & Atomos, for the up coming release of new firmware that brings ProRes RAW to the LUMIX BGH1 & Ninja V. KERNOW | Cine-Documentary Film | LUMIX BGH1
Produced in partnership with Panasonic LUMIX & Atomos. ‘Kernow’ is a short film created by Tommy Rowe. A film about a part of the world that is very special. It was a true honour to work with the guys at Panasonic LUMIX & Atomos in the run up to the official announcement of new firmware that opens up ProRes RAW to the BGH1 & Ninja V. The already awesome BGH1, goes full on BEAST mode! Except the handful of drone shots, all footage was shot on the BGH1 and Ninja V in ProRes RAW. As a GH5 & GH5S shooter, I found this combo an absolute delight to use. As for my thoughts on working with ProRes RAW, well, I have more on this coming shortly in a Behind The Scenes video, plus other content, so stay tuned for all that good stuff. 🔥 Like what you see? A VALENTINE'S STORM | LUMIX GH5

BMPCC 4K | My First Shoot (Cinematic Test Footage)
🔥 Like what you see? Check out my online store for custom colour grading LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store You may have seen that I recently picked up a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K to add to my set up. I had a load of old gear knocking around so decided to have a clear out, trade it all in and pick one of these up. I was pretty sure I'd make good use of it and I've always been a fan of the Blackmagic look. As a MFT shooter, I decided the 4K was probably a better fit for me over the 6K. So far so good. Here's some test footage from my first trip out with the camera. I have a lot to say about it but my first impressions are great - I love the look of the footage, and I think we are going to get on very well. My good friend and I, Alex Toze (he's a Sony Photographer but we won't hold it against him), headed up to Dartmoor National Park during some wild wintry weather and it was a great opportunity for me to bring the Pocket along and shoot my very first shots with the camera. In a nutshell, I'm really glad I decided to pick one of these up. The cinema camera format seems to work well for me and I think it will slot into my LUMIX micro four thirds set up perfectly. I have to say, the Blackmagic Design look really is lovely. The colours are a bit different to what I'm used to grading, so I'm going to need a bit of time doing tests and getting used to how the footage behaves before I'll be happy with the look. I'll be tweaking my custom LUT's but for a quick first attempt, this will do. Let me know what you think in the comments! Episode 2 of my cinematic video diary series, perhaps? I'm not really too sure of the purpose of these films, all I know is I enjoy producing them. A break away from client work and back to back edit sessions. I recently took an evening walk with my better half to a place called Bellever Forest, Dartmoor National Park in the UK. I decided to bring the GH5 along with me and I'm glad I did, because we had some incredible conditions - beautiful golden light and a stunning mist descended in the valley and above the river. Those who follow my work know how much I love Dartmoor and there are so many spots I want to explore over the winter, so more like this to come I'm sure. 'KRIS-MAS' | CINEMATIC TRAILER BY ROWE FILMS | LUMIX GH5S
The LUMIX GH5S shows off its low light muscles in this short teaser trailer I produced for the awesome Kris Barras Band. Kris wanted a highly cinematic trailer for his upcoming 'Kris-Mas' show, an online ticketed event. Using some footage we shot at one of his live shows last year, plus a little impromptu night shoot in Torquay, England, I put together this little promo for him. As the shoot was quite last minute, we had very little in the way of lighting to make use of, apart from a couple of little Aputure MC's, so it was all about finding some good practical lights on location. The trailer video is all about hyping up the show, which I hope it does. Anyway, I hope you like it. As always, questions and comments most welcome. All footage shot on the LUMIX GH5S. Work continues on the first official 'Life In Colour' music video. An up and coming music for film composer who just also happens to be my extremely talented brother. Filming weddings during the pandemic of 2020. It's been an extremely challenging year, to say the least. 🔥 Like what you see? Check out my online store for custom colour grading LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store So you may have seen that I recently managed to get my hands on the Fujifilm XT-4 for a couple of weeks. I've got a few videos planned for this camera, including a review specifically from a filmmaking/video perspective. Here's the first of three, some real world cinematography / cinematic test shots from the Fuji XT4, put together into a little short film. Follow Me: IG: https://instagram.com/rowefilms FB: https://facebook.com/rowefilms V: https://vimeo.com/rowefilms W: https://rowefilms.com At the weekend we took a trip out with Bish and his family, to the stunning North Devon coast in the UK, and I brought it along to put it through its paces. It was a stunning day but the wind was quite extreme, so it was pretty tough to think straight let alone produce some nice looking cinematography. But still, it came out well. Helped by some nice lighting conditions. Here's a few cinematic test shots from the Fuji. I'm quite impressed so far, the Fujifilm colour certainly living up to its name! I have two more videos coming shortly. I'll do a filmmaker's review of the camera, and a separate video comparing it directly to the Lumix GH5 and GH5S, my current main cameras of choice. A bit of a shoot out, if you like. So let me know in the comments if there's anything you'd like me to cover in those videos! CREATE CINEMATIC SHOTS FROM YOUR HOME! BTS CINEMATOGRAPHY TUTORIAL
A step by step walkthrough showing some techniques that will help you to create cinematic video from your own home, with very little gear. The best thing about cinematography is it can be done anywhere, even at home. Here's how to go about it! Watch behind the scenes, from start to finish, as I set up a little cinematic film sequence in my house. Including setting up the scene, lighting, camera settings, and colour grading. It’s Saturday night. During normal times I’d be out and about. So I thought I’d give myself a little challenge. What can I do in my house, using as little equipment as possible? I came up with a creepy little sequence that would work great for a short film. It just goes to show you don’t need incredibly inspiring locations and stacks of equipment to be creative and produce something that looks great. Follow this walkthrough and give it a try! Here’s a little insight into how I go about editing audio and use sound design in my video projects. I recently produced a short 'cinematic' B Roll sequence for a bit of fun, and to try something new. I thought I could do a quick walkthrough/tutorial on the subject of sound design, and show how I use audio and SFX in my videos. It was my birthday yesterday and as most of normal public life remains closed, we headed out for a day out on our bikes. Lovely! Cinematic B Roll in Lockdown | The Espresso Martini
🔥 Like what you see? Check out my online store for custom colour grading LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store Something a bit different from me. A cinematic B Roll sequence, of yours truly making a fresh Espresso Martini! By far my favourite drink after good old beer. I've had plenty of editing to do since the world locked down, I'm still going, but haven't actually picked up my cameras to film anything for 6 weeks now, which is unheard of. I couldn't resist the urge. So I decided to have a bit of fun on a Saturday night that I'd normally be either out shooting something or gigging in the band. I'm finding the whole thing very strange, especially so at weekends. But of course doing my bit to stay home. So here's a bit of fun. Some slightly different camera techniques for me. Always good to try something new and expand your skills. Not perfect, but pretty happy with the result considering I filmed it mostly on my own, with only one or two of the more basic camera moves held by my other half. My initial plan was to film myself and have her make the drink, but of course she didn't want to be in the video! It's quite challenging being in a shot and working out how to film it yourself, that's for sure. Hope you like it anyway! Stay safe folks. Filmed mostly handheld with some gimbal shots. Some of the movements were actually programmed into the Ronin S, a function that I'd never thought or needed to use before, so that was good to try. Comments and questions welcome as always! UK Wedding Films | Bovey Castle & Buckfast Abbey | Rowe Films
A fine example of a classic British wedding with a traditional Christian ceremony. Wedding Film production by Rowe Films "Things that are awesome, are things that inspire a sense of being in front of something that takes one's breath away. This is one occasion where it would be appropriate to use the word awesome" - Buckfast Parish Priest This was the wedding of Kathrina & Arthur. Shot at the incredible Buckfast Abbey and Bovey Castle on Dartmoor in Devon, UK. We had several weather warnings in force on the run up to the big day, for high winds and torrential rain across the south of England. Enough to give most wedding filmmakers a sense of dread, we had no option but to embrace it. The weather gods certainly threw everything at us, but for me, it actually added to the atmosphere of the film, and took absolutely nothing away from it. Kat & Arthur were the best bride and groom I could ever wish for. Taking even the horrific weather in their stride. It was an incredible day. https://rowefilms.com © Rowe Films 2020 MB01ZUKXVF8YYGN 🔥 Like what you see? Here's a preview of Katherine & Jubin's stunning Winter Wedding at Huntsham Court in Devon, UK. The couple tied the knot at the Church of St George in Taunton, Somerset. A beautiful Catholic Ceremony with some Indian customs thrown in too. What an incredible day. For this preview I have used some of the Priest's incredibly profound wise words. LUMIX S1H REVIEW IN THE LAND OF DRAGONS | Real World Review & Video Field Test
🔥 Like what you see? Check out my online store for custom colour grading LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store It’s finally here. My full, real world review & field test of a cinematic beast - the new full frame Lumix S1H. If you watched my last video on the subject, you will know that I recently decided not to switch to the Panasonic LUMIX S1H, from my GH5 and GH5S. Well a top man called David kindly contacted me to arrange a trial of the camera. I jumped at the chance to get my hands on one and decided to use the opportunity to produce an in depth, real world review. We all know the full specs and features of the S1H as they are all over the internet. So we are putting the spec sheet and manual away, and throwing ourselves right in at the deep end. What is the camera like to use in the real world? How does it perform out on location? What do I like, dislike and love about this camera? Is it currently the best hybrid/mirrorless camera out there for run and gun videographers and filmmakers like me? And most importantly of all, have I changed my mind about purchasing one? In order to really put the camera through its paces, we decided to take a trip to ‘The Land of The Dragons’. AKA the Brecon Beacons in Wales, UK. A very special place, and perfect for us to try and get some truly epic video footage. We tried to make the video a bit of a cinematic film, bit of a vlog, bit of a documentary, with plenty of behind the scenes content. Going out to use the camera in the real world and let you guys follow us doing it. Another camera review to add to the many awesome videos already on Youtube, but from my own perspective. It’s impossible to go through every single spec and feature in one video. There is so much to talk about! So I decided to focus on the features that are most important to me and my style of filmmaking. A couple of the points covered are the colour science and dynamic range, the menus and usability, mounting to a gimbal, low light performance and I even touched on the autofocus despite not needing it myself! I hope you enjoy the journey! I’d like to say a massive thanks to David for getting in touch. I’ve had an absolute blast testing the camera out and producing this video. That’s all thanks to you man much obliged! Please do subscribe if you like this video and feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments. I’d love to hear what you think. Panasonic LUMIX S1H | Real World Cinematography in 4K | Hands on Review | Teaser
🔥 Like what you see? Check out my online store for custom colour grading LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store My full length, real world review of the Lumix S1H, with behind the scenes content is now available to watch here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC5lfFLyWUk For those who watched my last video on the subject, you will know that I recently decided that I wouldn't be switching to the Panasonic Lumix S1H, from my GH5 and GH5s. Not just yet anyway. I was then contacted off the back of the video and offered a trial of the camera. Obviously, I jumped at the chance to give it a try and see for myself what it can do. Looking at a spec sheet is all well and good, but what's it like to actually use in the real world? Would I benefit from upgrading after all? Perhaps I would change my mind? I've had the camera for a few days now, and at the weekend we decided to take a trip out to the Brecon Beacons in Wales, UK, to really put it through its paces. The Brecons ended up being extremely bleak. The weather couldn't really have been much worse for testing a new camera, with white out conditions at times and dull, low light all day long. At first this was disappointing, but it actually ended up making for some seriously dark and moody cinematography. I do love a bit of moodiness I must say! Perhaps this wasn't such a bad thing after all, as shooting video in less than favourable conditions, with poor light, is the true test of any professional camera. Many cameras shoot high quality, filmic video in good conditions. But poor conditions can make or break it. This really gave us the opportunity to test the S1H low light capabilities. The shots at the end of this video were captured after dark with awful visibility, so how do you think it performed? My full length hands on review of the camera will be ready next week. Be sure to subscribe and hit the notification icon to be notified as soon as it lands. We've gone to a bit of an effort with this one, wanting to show you not just the beautiful footage that this camera can produce, but also allow you to watch us capturing it. There are so many in depth reviews of the S1 and S1H, diving deep into all of the features and specs, so instead I wanted to make a video about what it's like to use in the real world. What's it like for run and gun shooters like us? I intend to touch on the main pros and cons from my own perspective, what I like about it and what I don't like. I'll then conclude by referring back to my previous video, to see if my opinions have changed at all, and ultimately if I have changed my mind about purchasing one. My initial thoughts are very positive, there's no doubt about that. This camera produces some genuinely beautiful cinematic imagery that's an absolute dream to work with in post production. But will it be enough to convince me to buy one? Stay tuned to find out! The Special Relationship | American Girl Marries British Boy | Cinematic Wedding Film
Meg & Tom's wedding day was very, very special. Meg, from the USA, and Tom from England met in London and rapidly fell in love. Here's their story. The couple got married in Oxfordshire, UK, on a very wet and stormy Autumn/Fall day. Everyone of course hopes for a bright sunny wedding day, however concerns about the (very) bad weather soon passed when we realised it would actually add a lot to the mood and feel of the day. It certainly adds a lot of drama to the wedding video, and had the benefit of keeping the wedding party together on the day. The American & British contingents made it very special. It was lovely to welcome the USA folk to the UK for what was a beautifully traditional English wedding. Featuring a lovely little reading from "everyone's favourite movie" Love Actually, and a quintessential English Village Church steeped in history. Here's Meg & Tom's real life, emotional love story! 4 reasons I'm not switching to the Lumix S1 or S1H | A Wedding Filmmaker's Perspective
*UPDATE* Since posting this video, I have been contacted about a trial of the Lumix S1H, in order to reconsider my thoughts. You can watch my cinematic review here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC5lfFLyWUk I've been asked a few times recently if I'll be switching to the new Panasonic Lumix S series full frame cameras, from my current filmmaking setup of the micro four thirds GH5 & GH5S. I decided to make a short video to explain why I'm not currently considering changing to the S1 or S1H. It's impossible to cover every single one of the many pros and cons of each camera system in an 8 minute video, so I thought I'd cover the main points that were most important to me, for the kind of work I do and my style of shooting. All filmmakers and videographers have different needs. I'm looking at this predominantly from a wedding filmmaking perspective, as wedding cinematography currently makes up the biggest chunk of my workload. Specs wise, the S1 and S1H cameras offer improvements pretty much across the board, so why aren't I upgrading? I have many more videos planned in the coming weeks, including the much requested Colour Grading Tutorial. So be sure to subscribe so you don't miss it! If there's anything you think I've missed, feel free to let me know in the comments! Video shot on the Lumix GH5S with Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 II Music licensed via Musicbed MB01GOK7ABUBUMA

DJI OSMO POCKET | CINEMATIC 4K FOOTAGE
Want to get this look? Check out my Osmo Pocket Colour Grading Tutorial Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw6YtNide-E My third upload of footage shot entirely on the DJI Osmo Pocket. A fantastic little camera that shoots lovely footage which can be made to look quite cinematic and film like with a bit of colour grading. I'd say it's one of the best devices around in it's price bracket. The Osmo Pocket handled the bright and contrasty conditions very well. Rowe Films Cinematic Osmo Pocket LUT's: https://sellfy.com/p/mfxtq7/ Purchase the DJI Osmo Pocket Here: https://amzn.to/2ZA4VvS Settings: 4K 60P Cinelike picture profile Manual Exposure with no filters (see note below) Edited and Colour Graded in Final Cut Pro X using a Custom LUT and curves adjustments. Music licensed via Musicbed Note: No ND filters were used, just plug and play. As I do not use the Osmo for my professional work rather for a bit of fun, I do not want to spend money buying additional accessories. This footage goes to show the device produces lovely footage straight out of the box. I exposed each shot manually, knowing I would be using mostly slow motion from the 60fps footage, therefore I do not need to worry about needing a certain amount of motion blur and could effectively ignore the 180 degree shutter rule. Happy shooting folks! https://rowefilms.com MB01LPGSV2DZ4RW

This year instead of taking a larger camera with me, I decided to take the DJI Osmo Pocket. After my last Osmo Pocket cinematic test video, I wanted to try it out in a different environment. This is only the second time I've actually used it, but I'm so pleased I did. The Osmo Pocket is literally the perfect camera for holidays, family and travel videos. It produces some fantastic footage and you don't even notice it in your pocket. Here's a few clips from our trip. Shot entirely on the DJI Osmo Pocket. Settings: 4K 60fps and 24fps Cine D Manual exposure with no ND filters Edited in FCPX and graded with a custom LUT I made in Photoshop (not currently for sale). I decided to grade this video differently to my last Osmo video, to suit the beautiful Costa Del Sol setting! I'd also highly recommend Marbella to anyone who likes to have lots of fun! Most of the clips featured were shot in our villa and around the Puerto Banus area. What an incredible trip, roll on next year! MB01XPTJC7ERALM

GH5S + GHAlex Arri Alexa LUT test - Cinematic Grading
🔥 Like what you see? Check out my online store for my own custom colour grading LUTs and stay tuned for much more to come! https://rowe-films.sellfy.store I recently purchased the GHAlex LUTs by Emotive Color, which takes Panasonic V-Log L footage and replicates Arri Alexa colour science. First impressions are very good! Considering how harsh and contrasty the light was, the conditions really put the LUT to the test and the results are quite impressive. And as for the GH5S, well it always shine. I camera I'd recommend to anyone! Cinematic Elopement Film - Cornwall UK - Adelaide & Kathryn (Teaser)
A cinematic teaser produced for Adelaide & Kathryn's elopement film. The couple eloped to the beautiful Cornish coast for their special day.
