I struggle with impostor syndrome, so like to think about what my role is in the creative world, and it often happens late at night. Roles like director are quite nebulous and difficult to articulate sometimes... so i try to think of ways to classify what i do in a sentence. The download speeds are consistently over 100mbit/s, but uploads haven’t really gotten much higher than the teens in my experience. That being said, this is a solution for people who are using a cell-based connection out in the middle of nowhere, and this is actually, and i hate this term, a game-changer. Other than some outages that should have been on the weekend if they were planned, it’s been very reliable. Only in the heaviest of storms does it fade a bit. Since my dad retired, I've slowly been taking over his space, testing our love, but most importantly building a versatile studio in his heated workshop. I've added hooks onto his car-repair hoist for holding my seamless photography background stands, and now i've build a cross bar that i can easily mount an overhead camera on. The best bit is that i can raise it up and down as if i was raising a car, and as far as film and photography is concerned, i can lift anything. The next plan is building a light mount that i can slide along the 2x6" crossbar, so i can either light my top-down rig or even mount a hair-light to if i'm shooting studio photgraphy that can be raised over my seamless stand. getting rid of a wobbly boom stand.

Best practice is to kneel when you're using it so you don't over-swing and have it come around into your knee. I knew there was a better way to cut kindling so after googling around for a bit i spotted a design that was perfect. I have a few axes and hatchets laying around that i picked up at thrift shops, and this was the perfect use for one of my old, loose axes. Now i've got endless kindling, and i can make it quickly and confidently.

There was a lull in the ongoing pandemic, so with safety precautions in place, I made this short with 4 friends in a closed for winter cottage on Lake Erie. I asked my friend Nathan if he wanted to be in it, and he asked if he could help produce it and if his friend Andy could be in it. Andy is a fantastic actor and it turned out to be so much fun nailing down our takes and timing on set. Nathan helped support and plan the production. Joel, the only other crew member on set was my AC, managing camera, pulling focus, and helping me with lighting. When I first started editing, I wasn't quite happy with how it turned out. Reality sets in in the edit room and all of your mistakes are laid bare. So it ended up sitting on a hard drive for a few months. Eventually I revisited it and made it work. I also shot a few pickup shots that I felt helped the story. One aspect that was new was getting original music. I needed a good dolly to pull off a specific shot, so I just ended up making it myself. It’s essentially a Dana Dolly, and with a drill and a saw, you could make your own. I also rant on about how important ideas/stories/concepts are to shooting. Don’t go out and shoot pointless stuff with your camera, think for a moment, pause, teach yourself how to just quiet your mind and put some energy into coming up with ideas. Don’t shoot without one or at least look for one while you’re playing around with your camera.

With the world quarantined and time to finally finish it up, I felt like it was a good time to release it to the world. This is the first in a series of shorts I’m going to shoot this year. I often work with bigger crews and you can lean on a lot of people to make things “legit”. So with this short in particular, I pushed myself to strip production all the way down to a micro crew so I could give myself a creative self-audit. I’m terrified of leaning on one style of shooting throughout my career. I enlisted the help of my BFF, Chris Duchaine, probably the most creative person I know, to fill in the details... literally, from hand-making the cardboard phone, to hauling gear in my minivan, to finding a creative purpose for even the the titling. It's really special to have a creative partner. This audit was to see where I can grow. I feel like it’ll make me more conscious of my weaker areas and work on them as well as find complimentary people to fill out future crews. My goals were to: - Light, shoot, and direct some proper narrative dialogue overs - this is an incredibly “naked” process that can’t hide behind style. I have mixed feeling about the result, but that was my goal. I had planned on it not starting and then I get to turn that into a comedy bit, but it started right up. I guess a new battery last fall and premium gas really help it start better. Mid-video, I got a text from a friend who wanted some hops, so I swung by my old, mowed-down patch of brewing hops to dig up some roots. They're indestructible. I grew four varieties: Zeus, Chinook, Cascade, and Mt. Hood. But I gave them all away, never finding the time to finish setting up my brewing setup. You have to draw a line in your random hobbies and interests somewhere

Sometimes it'll save you a ton of money, but other times the labour itself isn't worth it. But either way, it's usually still more fun to make it yourself. I was cleaning the basement and found some old $7 china balls or paper lanterns left over from our wedding and decided to light my video with one instead of my ~$1200 LED setup. I also renovated a bigger part of my basement for my office and wanted to mount some speedrail on the ceiling to hang lights or an overhead camera. My father-in-law helped me machine and weld some custom baby plates or nail-on plates for the ceiling. And by "help", I mean he did it while I filmed.

I hadn't developed black and white film at home since college, so there was a bit of a re-learning curve. But I was reminded of how simple it is. And now with a dark bag, it's a small, simple operation. I sacrificed an old roll of film to demonstrate what happens in the dark. I usually get my kids to do it a couple times looking at what they're doing, and then load it a couple more times with their eyes closed so they can learn it by feel before moving onto the real deal. We're developing Kodak Tri-x 400 black and white 35mm film, and loading it onto second-hand Paterson reels and tanks. We used Kodak D76 developer, and just rinsed between developer and fixer. No stop bath. It's not the best method, but we're easing ourselves back into the whole thing. Give developing a try! Most of my photography is highly planned, lit and retouched, so it's been fun to just pick up a camera and go out without a plan and find the light. I know the pictures aren't great, but I thought it'd be fun to show EVERY frame, the FULL ROLL with no edits. This is part 1. It was getting a bit cold so we went out another day to finish the roll. I love my 35mm Olympus OM-1, my Yashica 635 medium format TLR (Twin Lens Reflex), I'm super bummed about a Nikon One Touch L35 AF2 point and shoot that won't focus, but the cheap and fun Canon A35F rangefinder made up for it a little bit. For my son, he got a wicked Nikon FG 35mm SLR. I don't love how it's plastic and needs a battery to run. I love how compact it is.
