Variable NDs are really tricky to pick out, and if you aren't careful they can really damage your image. The Freewell V2 just launched, and it's loaded with a whole bunch of interesting features beyond the ND filter itself. I thought I might put it through it's paces and test the quality of the light reduction to see if it's any good. I'm happy to report the filter doesn't degrade image quality, and the other features it offers are really useful too. I absolutely love this filter for filmmaking. I thought I would jump into DaVinci Resolve really quick to demo some low light footage color grades this wintry evening. Modern cameras are becoming more and more capable of shooting in less than ideal lighting situations. There are cameras on the market (like some of Sony's sensors) that you can basically use as night vision. I think the Sony FX3 is one of the strongest options on the market today, and a huge reason for that is the lens mount. With adapters you can use almost any lens, and most importantly beautiful vintage lenses. One of my favorite sets is the ever popular Leica Rs, and the Summicron-R 50mm f/2 was on my camera for the entire trip. The bokeh is gorgeous, the falloff is beautiful, and i absolutely love the flaring characteristics. Everything was recorded on the Sony FX3 in Slog 3. I think there are a lot of valuable lessons that filmamkers could learn from filming on super cheap cameras. You can learn all of the fundamentals of great imaging on cameras that can be bought used for less than $100. Recently I've had a lot of fun shooting with the first serious camera I ever bought, which of course is the Canon T3i. This absolute legend of a DSLR is where a lot of us started, and you can buy them used for around $100 these days if you get lucky. I think there is a lot of value in picking up a cheap old camera and shooting with it. What's the point in shooting with an old DSLR? What cheap cameras are good for video?
