Intent is the foundation for most art forms - and whether that intent comes from a desire to simply create, to tell a story the best way we can, or to invoke feelings in our audience - we can always make our images mean more, if we step back and think about why we might be creating them in a particular way. Lighting is one way to carry intent visually and describe to our audience the feelings surrounding a particular image. And whether this intent is picked up on consciously, subconsciously, or even not at all, we're better able to develop our creative voice and improve the way we communicate through art. And although we can automate many effects using the built-in features of lighting fixtures, sometimes, a simple DIY solution can prove just as effective. Combining both automatic and manual effects also makes it possible to show more varied lighting scenarios, even with a small team. Blocking light using flags and other black material allows us to control the direction and spill of a light source. We can also block light to create shape on the face, in the form of negative fill. By understanding the usage of flags and negative fill in natural light, we're better able to implement these ideas and processes when working with our own light - better replicating the way light works in reality and allowing us to light for both natural and stylistic looks, whilst retaining control over our image. Day for Night is a technique used in cinema to visually convey nighttime - whilst actually being shot during the day. The reason we can do this is because both sunlight and moonlight share a very similar quality of light, due to their distance and apparent size to us on Earth. This means there are a few ways we can use daylight in place of expensive lights and setups to create a night scene - this usually requires a lowering of exposure and cooling down of the image using white balance and other techniques, to sell the look of night and how our vision perceives such a low level of light in reality. Breaking color temperature down into 3 different styles of shot: Recreation, Modification and Exaggeration. By thinking about most any shot in this way, you may be able to better visualise and implement the desired visual language of the shot/scene/film you're shooting; Recreation allows us to create something very realistic, right down to how a certain location looks in reality at a certain time of day. Modification allows us to add temperatures into a scene that exist in reality, but don't necessarily exist in the space we're shooting. Exaggeration lets us create a combination of temperatures that we might not ever see with our own eyes - but still exist. Crafting an image with color doesn't always have to be based around complicated theory and color combinations; how you feel about a certain color, how your character feels about a certain color, or simply your own intuition toward using a certain color, may play a more important role in telling the story - and, in tandem, creating the intended feeling for the image. Using color with these feelings in mind can form a base, which can be built upon using more complicated theory - and with a base to work from, the generally accepted ideas, combinations and theory around color, can feel much less intimidating. Butterfly, or Paramount Lighting, refers to the position of a light source placed in front and above of a character or subject, in such a position to cast a butterfly-shaped shadow under the nose. Used in the Golden Age of Hollywood for studio portraits and even favoured by certain actresses in movies themselves, the butterfly light slims the face and accentuates the jaw. Move the light a little higher and the face might appear too shadowy, with facial features obscured - move the light a little lower and the face might appear too flat. The butterfly light satisfies that middle ground between mood and visibility - and as a bonus, it's a top light - which means it can be used in many situations where we subconsciously expect there to be light coming from above the frame - even when we can't see it in the scene. In cinema, we want our images to look three dimensional and upstage, or short lighting, is a great way to do this. But does upstage always make a "cinematic" image? Not necessarily. There are other lighting techniques - like broad lighting - which we can use to tell a story. And once we make the connection between story, emotion and lighting, the cinematic feeling will take care of itself. Back light isn't always as simple as just placing a light behind your subject; the parts of the body the light falls on to can actually be broken down into 4 general terms: Rim Light, Edge Light, Hair Light and Kicker - and each of these can be utilized in cinema, to create, emphasise and carry the feelings of the story being told. In Part 3, we take a look at Hair Light and Kicker - and how you can use both forms of back light practically - to more obviously and more subtly to separate your subject from the background, whilst carrying the mood and feeling intended for your image. In Part 2, we take a look at Edge Light - a more subtle form of back light than the Rim Light, which can be used in combination with composition to drive the feelings presented by the image or story, in a more nuanced way. When it comes to using tube lights in your video work, it can be easy to think that something longer is just for show - what are you gonna do with such a long tube anyway, apart from using it as decoration? But actually, if we think about the ways we can use a long strip of light to our advantage, we're able to employ it in a few different situations. We take a look at some of the ways we can do this with the Godox TL180. I'm one of Samyang's UK brand ambassadors - which means I shoot most of my work with the Samyang VDSLR MK2 Cine lens kit. A lightweight, soft light source can be pretty vital when you're working on a budget - you don't really want to be hanging heavy lights on a cheaper boom arm. Sirui's A100B is a great tool to overcome this problem and we simply used a heavy duty boom arm (counter weighted - still important) to shoot most of these images. As a bonus, the magnetic mount can be stuck to metal surfaces, and although hanging the light upside down by it's magnets won't work too well, it can be a super handy option as a magnetic wall-mount - like we demonstrated in the kitchen scene, with the fridge. A common photography tool that is relatively uncommon in the film/video world - the beauty dish. This modifier creates quite a specific look that is very fitting for certain scenarios, like the one demonstrated in the video. These are tools designed with photography flashes and strobes in mind, not high powered, constant lights that kick off a lot of heat - I would think twice before shooting one of these with, for example, a 1200 watt unit at full power - you may melt something, you may be fine, it's not something I've tried! But I've used them with lower powered lights quite often and they've been solid. I'm one of Samyang's UK brand ambassadors - which means I shoot most of my work with the Samyang VDSLR MK2 Cine lens kit. Why You Need Powerful Lights for Filmmaking - Feat. Nanlux Evoke 1200B

In Part 4 of our "Why You Need Powerful Lighting for Filmmaking" series, we take a look at the Nanlux 1200B and how a high output lighting fixture like this can enable you the flexibility to create images exactly how you want them to look. Along with the flexibility of bi-color and a lower power draw than it's 2 pricier competitors, the Arri M18 and Arri D25, the 1200B also has an IP54 rating, meaning you can use it rain or snow. That's a big bonus if you're in the UK! ;) As we've stepped up the output of our lights in each subsequent part of the series, this is a somewhat bigger step than the last 3 units - and with a full fresnel setup on a combo or wind up stand, this light will generally require more than one person to assemble and raise safely on a heavy duty stand. I'm forever thankful to companies like Nanlux in providing me the means to demonstrate their lighting, whilst (hopefully) being able to teach and inspire others in their own visual practises and learning more about light myself in doing so. I feel like this is a one of those moments of reflection, as I started getting more into shooting, lighting and the craft of an image a good 8 years ago, which progressed into this YouTube channel and making little lighting tutorials - thinking I might be able to save up for a 1.8k HMI one day - and now I'm working with something arguably more efficient! So a massive thank you to my patrons and everyone who has supported and does support me, here on YouTube. Though I'm not sure who is going to read this as it's in a YouTube description ;) I'm one of Samyang's UK brand ambassadors - which means I shoot most of my work with the Samyang VDSLR MK2 Cine lens kit. Film vs film emulation - a more complicated topic than just simple comparisons, due to the variables in film development and the film emulation process. But we made some comparisons anyway! And Dehancer Photo was the best way to do it. We also take a look at Dehancer's film emulation app for iPhone, which has changed the way I view an iPhone as an image capturing device - turning a phone into something that, to me, feels like using a point and shoot film camera (plus the added benefits of portrait mode) without the hassle and costs of developing film. In Part 3 of our Why You Need Powerful Lights for Filmmaking series, we're taking a look at Nanlite's Forza 720B and how this combination of power output and bi-color flexibility can help you when it comes to lighting your images. I can't stress enough how something as seemingly simple as bi-color can add so much flexibility and ease of use to a powerful light - combined with wireless control and tools like the fresnel and projection mount, you gain much more control over your lighting and the things you can do with it, without having to deal with the hassle of color correction gels and the myriad of awkward ways to attach them. Lights like this open out even more possibilities of smaller teams and even one-man-band productions being able to light professionally on a micro or no budget production, and make the usefulness of powerful lights more accessible and the benefits they bring more achievable! I wanted to touch on each image in a little more detail as to how the colors might be interpreted... but decided it might diminish the message of "feeling" and "emotion". How did each image feel to you, through color? The intent of an image doesn't always have to be made clear and the image itself can do the talking - leaving the viewer to simply feel how they feel about the image - and interpret it based on that feeling. Also, the Forza 60C is a fantastic light, and is definitely where colored lighting fixtures are headed in the near future! Everyone's favourite lighting exercise - recreating shots from films! But is it actually useful? I would say yes - any practice is good practice - but when it comes to painstakingly recreating a shot from a film perfectly, I think it may be a little unhelpful, at least in the grand scheme of developing our own looks and practices. Instead, taking influence from a film's lighting or composition and making it your own can be far more beneficial when creating an image. We're simply using these influences as a base, tweaking them for own scenarios - and since we're not going for a perfect recreation - we're inadvertently adding our own touch and vision. Therefore, creating our own image, with it's own look. This applies to any creative field, as we're all influenced in conscious and subconscious ways by different creative mediums and even the world around us. You're simply taking - in this case, a library of film stills from ShotDeck - using them as influence, translating them into your own look and developing them into set of practises you can then go on to use in your future work. I think this is why you should recreate shots from films - just not necessarily in the perfected form you might first imagine! The easiest way to complete an image and present a more cinematic, filmic look - a bulb! When lighting a scene, using a practical light, like a bulb in a lamp shade, can help you motivate your lighting - showing your audience where the light in the shot is supposed to be coming from. This allows you to light your image to how you want it to look, whilst anchoring it to something within the frame - forming a representation of the light in your scene in a way that makes sense to the viewer. So if you couldn't tell from the 15 minute video, I love this plugin. You can see the amount of work the team at Dehancer have put into it, by checking out the articles and FAQ sections on their website - https://blog.dehancer.com/about/ . Just having this as a free online resource is great, even without the plugin itself - very appreciative of what Dehancer have done here, not only with the film emulation, but also the educational aspect! It's worth noting that while I used a lot of grainy looks in this video, there's absolutely no reason why you can't turn the grain off and go for a more modern, detailed look, with the colour of your chosen film stock. As you're working in Resolve, you can also add nodes before or after Dehancer to open out and get more specific with your color grade. So it's flexible enough to be used for a more modern look with filmic colours as a base too, and I'll definitely be using it this way also. ITEMS USED TO MAKE THE BOUNCE: A1 stretched canvas Cable ties Hook and loop velcro tape Pins Screws Black material (we used "theatre curtain", good thickness, flame retardant, etc - the classic one to use it duvetyne) Bounce material (we used unbleached muslin - makes for a warm, smooth, bounce light) We also used a bradawl to make the holes, screwdriver to screw in the screws (what a sentence) and fabric scissors to cut the material. And a stapler! One update after using the bounce a few times: staple more of the velcro than just the ends, as it will start peeling off of the material :D or there may be a better solution - I'm rubbish at this stuff ;) Sometimes, creating your own solution is the best way to get around issues that you might face when working on budgets in your video/photo work. We make a DIY overhead bounce, which can be controlled via makeshift flags, and also use velcro tape to make the bounce material swappable - giving you more options when it comes to using the canvas. And the whole setup is very light, meaning you're able to hang it from cheaper boom arms - don't go too cheap though ;) Camera: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro Lenses: Samyang VDSLR MKII - 14mm 24mm 35mm 50mm #filmmaking #cinematic #lighting

Shooting Colour With The LUMIX S5
Paid Partnership with @LUMIXUK Find out more or try the LUMIX S5 for yourself - https://bit.ly/2M58YOd We shot this beautiful dance on a moody, cold, winter's evening - using the LUMIX S5 to capture the pastel-blues of the fading light, and a mysterious coloured glow on our dancers as we approached night time. We colour graded the video utilizing Panasonic's VLOG - the S5's LOG shooting profile - giving us a beautiful starting point and allowing us to easily make a basic colour grade; enabling us to see how the camera captures natural looking, filmic colours. We also took advantage of the S5's In-Body Image Stabilization, allowing us to shoot handheld and be able track the movements of the dancers, whilst maintaining a stable image. #MovingImagesForward #ShotOnLUMIX #LUMIXS5 #LUMIX
Capturing Light With The LUMIX S5
Paid Partnership with @LUMIXUK Find out more or try the LUMIX S5 for yourself - https://bit.ly/2M58YOd Light is the foundation of any image - and the LUMIX S5 is an amazing tool for capturing it - hard or soft, bright or dark. We shot in a variety of lighting scenarios, whilst utilizing different aspects of the camera; such as it's Dual Native ISO, enabling us to shoot a clean image at ISO 640 or 4000, and allowing for clear and legible video, when filming in lower light conditions. It can be difficult to think of a 2 grand lighting unit as affordable - but if we think about the amount of money that goes into new cameras, lenses, and rigs, it's not hard to see that a pricier, powerful light, is an amazing investment for a low budget filmmaker - opening up your lighting options considerably and allowing you to better achieve your vision. We'll be exploring this topic more in depth in future parts! :) #filmmaking #cinematic #lighting

And while it is still useful in these areas, over the years it's become much more than that. Now you can find such quality stock that there can be many uses for it, across a whole range of projects. I used to think, why use stock, just shoot it yourself! And the more I shot, the more I realised that realistically, you can't always do that, especially if you're working on lower budgets. This video is sponsored by Artgrid - so as well as going over the benefits of an Artgrid membership - I wanted to actually show a few projects I shot this year where stock footage and in particular, Artgrid, has really benefitted and helped to better the work. Even if you just need to drop a little clip in for something like a music video, it's amazing to be able to just quickly search and find something that fits, really easily. Overall, a highly recommended stock platform! #filmmaking #stockfootage #artgrid

Tiny panels like this are extremely useful for getting into tight spaces and for placing just out of frame - not to mention, these days they have a decent light output and a range of colour and effects options available. If you're looking at lighting a small space on a budget, these types of lights can be lifesavers, as there's way less of struggle to fit them into tighter spaces - and if you need to mix colour temperatures, you can just do that with a button - rather than buying and setting up gels. Filling in shadows is important on any camera, regardless of how dark you intend your scene to be. One aspect of a "cinematic" look is control of your highlights and shadows, in such a way to have detail in both - fill light can help you with this, especially on a camera with limited dynamic range. But it can also give you a richer, more detailed image on a more capable camera system too. In the video, we take a look at utilizing fill light for a darker, higher contrast scene, on an older Nikon D800 DSLR. This doesn't mean you have to use fill light for everything though - depending on how you want your image to look, letting your shadows fall into pure black can be very effective for the intended look and feel of a scene. As with any filmmaking technique, this is just one way to achieve a look and feel in your work - there are endless ways to paint with light, create mood and experiment with image making! In multi camera setup situations, when you need to get more than one angle for your shoot - but your cameras might not necessarily all be the same model or make. This can cause major headaches in post when trying to match up colours between each camera, as different cameras, different sensors and different colour sciences can be pretty different to one another, and you might be spending a lot of time making complicated, targeted adjustments to specific hues to try and match everything together. The Colour Space Transform tool simplifies this - allowing you to use the same, or similar grade, across the board, with only minimal adjustments needed to match up your footage. Overall, it's an extremely useful tool, especially when you're shooting on a budget, and you need to match more expensive, capable cameras with less capable ones. I'm hoping this little series will help people to think about the ways in which this can be achieved and be able to build on these ideas. Mirrors and mirror board are great tools for bouncing hard light where you can't fit a whole lighting unit - there's a variety of applications for using mirrors in your lighting and in this video we can see how it helps to add a light "shooting through" the window, where we would otherwise have no tools to put a light outside of it. Now as with anything, this isn't perfect - depending on the size of the mirror, distance of light from that mirror and distance of mirror from blinds - it's tricky to light up a bigger area. But for close ups and detailed shots as shown in the video, this sort of thing can save you in a pinch if you have absolutely no way to put a light out of that window! Experimenting with image and sound is a fantastic way to help you practise and hone your craft in filmmaking. This doesn't just apply to video, it can apply to any form of creative art. Following your intuition and experimenting until something feels right, can really open you up to thinking about your ideas differently and the way your creative process works. What makes an exercise like this so great is that you don't have any restrictions to what you can do, or any expectations in place from anyone, you're free to just create. You might be able to take pieces away from your abstract works and be able to apply them to a bigger story, or find that the ideas fit in your other projects. You might even be able to make an entire film this way, why not?! Training your brain to tackle things differently is an essential part of the creative process and I feel that exercises like this can really help with your own processes and ideas. As with anything, this isn't a be all end all - there are plenty of ways to stay open to ideas and boost your creativity - this is just one way that I personally love! :) Also, Youtube is such a great platform for little experimental/abstract/art films and I believe there should be a lot more on here than there currently is! :D I think it would be awesome to start a channel or a group on here with that in mind... So this is a technique you sometimes see Roger Deakins using in his work - the "cove" of lighting around your subject, allows you to light for a natural looking, graduated fall off of light on the face. The versatility of the setup allows you to tweak the power levels of each bounced light to easily adjust your contrast ratios on the subject, allowing for moodier, darker looks, or softer, brighter looks. You have a big soft light in your scene, without needing the extra room or expenses to shoot super powerful lights through huge pieces of diffusion. A very useful technique! Reverse key lighting is a simple technique that makes your lighting more dynamic, contrasty and interesting. Which side of the actor the key light is placed can sometimes be overlooked when learning about lighting - when I started learning, I would just put the light at a 45 degree angle to the subject on whichever side of them - with no thought as to why I was doing this. Knowing about broad and short lighting is very helpful when you want things to look a certain way and to fit a certain mood. Upstage or reverse key is a great way to get that cinematic depth and there's a reason why it's such a popular technique. Look out for it in movies, you'll see it a lot! I really pushed my BMMCC in terms of low light here - let's see how Youtube handles it ;)

How's my clickbait thumbnail? Haha! No other way to demonstrate this technique with such a small image! Let's hope that you can actually see what the super scale is doing on Youtube. It's very subtle, but it's a massive help when you want to add that boost in sharpness to your image, or to match with other cameras. I use super scale a lot in my work, as I mainly work with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5K and the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera, which shoot in 2.5K and 1080p respectively. What you'll also find in the world of UHD blu ray, is that many films (especially films that are a few years old) have actually been upscaled to 4K from sub-4K resolutions. I have no technical insider knowledge as to how this is done exactly, but I'd imagine it's a similar function to the Resolve super scale. Overall it's a great way to boost footage from lower resolution and older cameras and works much better than a simple export and upscale to 4K.

Looking back over my hard drives, I realised that over the last 5 or 6 years, I've used gimbals a hell of a lot in my work! So I decided to make a video on why gimbals are such amazing tools and just a few of the ways that you can use them in your cinematography. Nowadays it's so easy to shoot professional footage on the go using 3 - axis gimbals - whereas in the past you'd need to be setting up dolly tracks or hiring steadycam operators. Not to mention the newer, smaller, pistol grip gimbals, that you can mount to anything and use pretty much anywhere. I'm still amazed at the quality of shots you can get using these tools and I think in today's run-and-gun world of video, they're pretty much an essential purchase if you're looking at getting smooth, professional looking footage on the fly. How Can A Hybrid LED Light Help Your Craft? - Godox FV150
https://robelliscinematography.com/downloads - Two Cinematic Colour Grades in Davinci Resolve - 18 Minute Video Tutorial for £8! So Godox sent me their FV150 LED light to try out - it's a continuous LED light/photo flash combo, so you can switch between photography and video easily, without having to change modifiers, etc. It got me thinking about how you can use a hybrid light like this to practise photography as a cinematographer, and cinematography as a photographer, as the two mediums can often overlap. Experimenting with different ways of making images is a good way to expand your abilities and learn lessons and techniques, that you can then apply to your own field of expertise. On another note - I've been tempted to add some photography-related videos to my channel for some time now. Would be great to get some opinions on whether that would be a good idea, or would it somewhat dilute my channel and lose interest from some of the (small) audience that I have? Would love to start another channel on photography, but I doubt it would get many views! Cheers guys! How To Light A Cinematic Interior Shot - With 3 Lights
Lighting is pretty damn important if you're looking to make cinematic footage, especially indoors - a good camera will help for low light, but learning to control the way the scene is lit is going to look way more cinematic than simply relying on your camera to do all the work. It's good to think about it in terms of painting the scene with light - you start in pitch black and slowly introduce elements of lighting to draw interest and add texture to the shot. After blocking out the daylight from the shot, I turned the lamp/practical on, to set the tone for the scene and how it would then be lit - it also added some subtle back light and separation for the subject. I then added the 1st red head in as key light, which was a really hard light, making some harsh shadows - so I softened it with the diffusion in the middle of a 5-in-1 reflector. I then played around with adding interest to the background, using the household ceiling lamp and adding a streak of light from another room using the 2nd red head, which was a little distracting, so diffusion was added to soften it up and call a little less attention to it. The 3rd red head was used to create a second "lamp", making a bright patch on the wall and subtly implying that our key light was in fact coming from a light just off-camera, tying the lighting together and making it more believable. All I used (excluding stands!) was a cheap set of 3 800w tungsten red head lights (Amazon or Ebay are easy for these) and the diffusion material from the middle of a standard 5-in-1 reflector (again, Amazon or Ebay). As long as you've got some material for blacking daylight out, you can easily light night interiors during the day. This can even just be the curtains that are already there. There isn't really any set rules on what you can use to black light out, as long as your camera can't see any daylight spilling into the scene then you've done the job! Black Magic Micro Cinema Camera - Evening and Low Light
Shot some stuff at Charmouth Beach the other evening, thought I'd shoot a bit after sunset to test the BMMCC's low light capabilities too. There is some noise, as with the 2.5k at times, I like it - in fact I've become a big fan of a picture grain in the past few months, in photography and cinema. Sometimes I think things look a little too sterile and clean when there's no noise at all. As far as tests go this might be a bit unconventional but it was fun :) BMMCC Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Genus Eclipse Variable ND Hoya UV/IR Cut Metabones Speedbooster Nikon-MFT Tripod
A Quick 3 Light Setup - Cinematography
Quick and dirty 3 light setup - light levels measured by eye! Key - Tungsten Red Head to right of scene, shooting through diffusion Fill - Aputure Lightstorm Ls-1s Daylight LED in back right corner, bounced off ceiling Backlight - Little Yongnuo Daylight LED back left, diffused with a little grease proof paper The idea was to have the redhead simulating a lamp to my left (would love to have implemented a lamp in the shot, however, don't own one!) The Aputure daylight balanced LED filling in the ambient which in this case would be moonlight/blue hour sky - would like to have flagged it away from hitting the windows, something to bear in mind for next time! The little yongnuo daylight balanced LED is giving me a slight kick near the back of my head camera left, perhaps a street light coming in through the window - this little light isn't very powerful and the diffusion took a lot of it's output away, would like something a bit stronger for this!
