Sony FX3 4K 100fps slow motion with the new Tamron 70-180 F2.8 G2 Emount | Jurien Bay Beach
Filmed some 4K slow motion footage with the Sony FX3 and the Tamron 70-180 2.8 G2. Holiday down at Jurien By I brought the new Tamron 70-180 F2.8 G2 and the Sony FX3 to try out some slow motion shots at 100 frames per second in 4K. I also used the Feiyu Tech Scorp2 Cinema Gimbal for some of the fast trucking shots. The Sony FX3 again was impressive with its IBIS. This is a short lighting breakdown from a night shoot while filming at iso 12800 with the Sony FX3. I see a lot of questions on how to expose and reduce the noise with iso 12800. I think the only thing you can do is add more light. Whether that is to position the shot around already available light or introduce artificial light. Hopefully you get something out of this. Internal recording XAVCS-I 4K at 30fps 1/60 shutter speed. Shot on the Sony FX3 and SLR Magic MicroPrime 35mm T1.3 Cine Lens with the new SLR Magic Variable ND Filter. Filmed entirely handheld. I was very impressed with the FX3's standard image stabilisation with a manual lens. Completely removes unwanted camera shake, while keeping the camera movement organic. Pro Res Raw vs Sony FX3 internal codecs - ungraded
Basic comparison of Pro Res Raw via external recording on Ninja V and Sony FX3 internal DCI 4K. Hard to tell without grading both, but I’ll leave this here in case anyone finds it helpful. I did find editing the Pro Res Raw files a lot easier on my Mac, and colour grading was faster with the ability to change ISO and white balance. Sony FX3 + Ninja V ProRes Raw footage
Filming ProRes Raw with the Atomos Ninja V and Sony FX3. These are some rushes for a documentary. Accurate colour depth with the Ninja V. Something that the feature film “The Creator” used. I find there is less noise with Pro Res Raw and colour grading is a lot easier and flexible. That 12bit (16bit) allows you to push the colours further and provides higher dynamic range than recording internally with the Sony FX3. Sony FX3 external ProRes Raw and the best budget wide cine lens - SLR Magic MicroPrime 21mm T1.6
The Sony FX3 and Ninja V ProRes Raw combo produces great colours with its 12bit log files converted from 16bit. I wanted to test the 12bit colours during golden hour and see how well the Sony FX3 dynamic range holds up to the quickly changing light. These shots were taken at Rockingham Beach in Perth Australia during sunset. Recorded in DCI 4K ProRes raw mostly at 800iso with the night shots in 12800iso. The SLR Magic MicroPrime Cine Lens 21mm T1.6 was great at exposing in low light. The Nisi 6 stop IRND filter helped expose in the day at T2.8. I also had a 1/8 black mist filter to soften the shadows and highlights. No denoiser applied. Graded this with Phantom LUTS Arri Jamaica Legacy in Color Finale Pro. Testing the SLR Magic Micro Prime Cine 50mm T1.2. A very interesting vintage look, especially wide open at a T1.2. I think it is a great affordable lens that pairs well with the digital Sony FX3 image. Unfortunately I had to replace this one as there was a foreign object left inside from a manufacturer fault, creating the silver blur/haze on the left of screen. Lit with just natural light from an open window on the right of screen off camera. The blinds on the screen are half closed to avoid any blown out highlights. I'm sitting next to a black wall on the left of screen acting as negative fill. Getting the most out of your Sony FX3's high dynamic range by shooting at 12800 iso
Shooting at the dual native iso 12800 with your Sony FX3 will give you the most dynamic range. If exposed correctly you will recover the highlights and retain detail in the shadows. To achieve this I used the NISI ND filter (3 stops) an 1/8 black mist. I like the look from NISI filters, but the build quality feels a weak.
