Maybe it wasn’t just rain; at times, it honestly felt like a relentless thunderstorm. In this so-called paradise; the Philippines, I think I hit rock bottom. What was supposed to be an amazing trip turned into a major disappointment for me. Together with my good friend Rein, I flew to the Philippines with the intention of enjoying a beautiful vacation and capturing some cool photo/video content. Unfortunately, I spent the majority of the trip in pain due to a cut on my right foot and an infected wound on my left foot. I even had to fly home a few days earlier, which made it also impossible for me to film at a festival in Saudi Arabia. Mentally, this entire experience was quite a big challenge, considering I was really looking forward to this trip and I wanted to break free from my negative thoughts. In the end, it only made it worse. Although it wasn't always enjoyable, I’m still very grateful for this experience and the special memories I was able to create together with Rein. The film “bittersweet" is the sequel to my previous personal video “lost.” I wanted to create a video in response to this search and, once again, I take you into my deepest thoughts and feelings. I’m currently working on a new travel film from the Philippines and really wanted to release “bittersweet” in English before completing new work. The footage for this film was shot on the Portuguese island of Madeira, which gained significant meaning for me five years ago when I read a book my mother wrote about everything surrounding the passing of my father. There are several symbolic images in the video that refer to specific moments in my life. Thanks to @ReinMartens for beautifully capturing the ideas. When I was in Africa 4 years ago, I got depressed due to taking malaria pills. I decided to write a poem about my feelings. My goal was to clear my mind and write down my darkest thoughts. The result was “lost”, a short poem about my search to happiness and all of the mental struggles I’ve experienced. After writing the poem I soon got the idea to also make a video with it. I made a storyboard and wrote down all my ideas. I procrastinated for a very long time, but last year I decided to finally make it happen. 3 jaar geleden begon ik in Afrika met het schrijven van een gedicht. Het doel was om mijn sombere gedachtes uit mijn hoofd te halen en op papier te zetten. Het resultaat is ‘zoek’, een kort gedicht dat gaat over mijn zoektocht naar geluk en de struggles die ik daar soms bij ervaar. Al snel kwam het idee om ‘zoek’ te gaan verfilmen. Ik maakte een shotlist en schreef alle ideeën die ik voor deze video had op. Echter schoof ik het telkens weer voor me uit om de video daadwerkelijk op te gaan nemen. Ik had geen tijd, geen inspiratie, geen motivatie en had angst voor de confrontatie met mezelf en deze gedachtes. Uiteindelijk heb ik dit aan de kant kunnen zetten en ben ik 2 dagen lang volle bak aan de slag gegaan met dit project. Mocht je je na het zien van deze video zorgen om me maken, check dan nog even een keer de laatste zin. Het gaat momenteel misschien wel beter dan ooit. Ik ben blij, trots, opgelucht en dankbaar. Als laatste wil ik @ReinMartens natuurlijk bedanken voor zijn hulp bij dit project. This is my submission for the RNEC 2018. I tried to do something out of my comfort zone. I didn’t want to do what I thought everybody would do: make an overkill edit with too much fancy transitions and using that overused trendy Illenium song. I tried to focus on sound design, color grading and the vibes in the video. I think people these days don’t see how much effort goes into making a proper video. People often think that you’re a good editor when you’re using a lot of those transitions and unrealistic colorgrading. I don’t think that’s true and I hope you will see the effort I put into this, even though you won’t see any of the overused spectacular stuff. I hope you guys like it!
