You can check out all the references in the written version which I’ll be updating. https://www.cleverghost.net/blog/imagequality https://lenspire.zeiss.com/photo/en/article/overview-of-zeiss-camera-lenses-technical-articles https://www.ritsumei.ac.jp/~akitaoka/index-j.html https://www.achtel.com/mtf-camera-comparison And my heartfelt gratitude to the Clever Ghosts that support me on Patreon. There was a lot of mental block for this video as it took more than a month longer than it should have but you have supported me even when I haven’t been creating and it means a lot. For those that want to support me in other ways you can subscribe and listen to my music on the other channel: https://youtu.be/8IeuHrsd_VI https://youtube.com/shorts/hTX97gMQlmg?feature=share https://youtube.com/shorts/DeN_cM9gEYo?feature=share https://youtube.com/shorts/9KdVC7UovcE?feature=share This is a tricky topic most wouldn’t touch but I thought I would at least get the ball rolling. I considered abandoning this video midway through because its focus is not exactly what I want to advocate, but I went through with it because if anyone’s going to take on the topic I’d rather it be me with more nuance. The moment numbers and dynamic range define image quality is when it loses its soul. I don’t think dynamic range is as relevant in today’s cinematography especially when lighting options are abundant. If you think 12 stops is a crutch for image quality then IDK what to say to you, we’re operating under different assumptions. Do I really need to address the “gear doesn’t matter” mantra that has been regurgitated a billion times? That’s not the point of this video. Image quality is indeed very malleable, but that doesn’t mean it’s irrelevant. Notice how the people saying gear doesn’t matter are the ones still trying to sell you something with lazy images. Image quality matters to me, and this is how I define it. If you think their understanding for making images is better then feel free to disregard this channel. That being said I think the micro contrast section in particular could have used more precise vocabulary as I avoided using the same terms out of repetition. That’s why I’ll be posting a written review to address any updates to this video. I also do really like the Blackmagic image, though the way I presented it may sound like I’m unfairly hating on the camera. Error and Uncertainty: This video is intended to explore rather than be a technical test and is catered toward those that are intellectually curious for creative application. If you do want to cite something here, please note that there will always be some error. For some camera tests, the sensor of the Blackmagic protrudes forward more than the other cameras when mounted to the same point. Some cameras are taller, but I also didn’t line them up perfectly. This led to some differences in perspective, but it also appears as though there’s a difference in DOF. My lenses use electronic communication and I set the f stop in camera, but it appears it was more than a minor shift, perhaps it’s the lens adapter or camera. For Fujifilm, I used a speed booster to match DOF to the full frame sensors and for native glass I adjusted aperture accordingly to equalize DOF. The contrast ratios are also different among cameras so you will be at the mercy of my judgement for matching exposure, color was not touched and used the same Rec709 conversion. Also this file was 420GB, which is above the limit for YouTube uploads so I had to compromise. I did some testing and found 4K ProRes to be better than 6K h265, but bear in mind the BMCC6K comparisons will look vaguely less sharp. Why Ultrawides are the Hottest Lens in Hollywood
0:00 - Intro 0:47 - Why 21mm? 2:37 - Ultrawide attributes 6:23 - DZO Arles 21mm Technical Review 12:04 - Filmmaking vs. Specs 13:14 - Love for the Ghosts Dear Ghosts, It is with great care and love that I present this project to you all. To be honest, I’ve been working on it so long that it always ends up looking boring to me after memorizing every frame. This video is based off of a very cinematic game called Little Nightmares. I had planned to record a short movie with myself and Chili, but there were many setbacks and our original set location was under construction so unfortunately it is mostly just Chili walking around. Perhaps next time we can record more story but I think the compositions have enough transition to resemble some storytelling elements. Music was really tough to write for this video, which took nearly 3 days. I had other soundtracks planned, but ultimately felt as though staying true to the OST would be nostalgically fitting for those in the know. Otherwise I’m quite happy how it turned out. I’m using CleverTwilight, Ghost and Decay LUTs to grade this video but I included rec709 footage in the technical section if you want to see what the lens looks with rec709, only basic edits to contrast and saturation. I feel like there are enough technical videos out there so I’m probably really close to done with technical reviews unless people express otherwise. It also might seem like I’m over exaggerating in that section but that’s only because I showed you the best footage mostly around t2 and not 1.4. I did shim the lens and DZO still said the lens has no problem. Luckily it’s only sometimes fuzzy, it’s fine if there’s a ton of separation such as when you’re really close to your subject. The majority of the footage was shot around t2 or t4 and the deliberate scenes 5.6. I think I showcased a bit of everything you’d want to see except nighttime footage, which did look nice but not good enough to include in an already long video. Wireless monitoring makes filmmaking fun again
0:00 - "Pianissimo" 1:57 - Hollyland Pyro 2:47 - Pyro S 3:00 - Pyro 7 6:56 - Latency 8:59 - Conclusion 10:02 - Credits, tech specs, teaser Soundtracks: https://youtu.be/63_WKJFQP3A https://youtu.be/VqeVmjXwtlM Dear Ghosts, So apparently contrast ratio is illegal for YouTube without horrendous banding, so after 10 test uploads this is the exposure I ended up with. It's not ideal, but I'm not willing to go any brighter for the short film despite already being on the darker side. It was graded with CleverDark so I contemplated making it even colder, but I'm ultimately satisfied with the image even if the mood is warmer than I'd creatively like. I’m sure some people may find the hdr highlights to be less than organic, but I’m actually at peace with it. Sometimes you need scenarios that force your hand to experiment with new looks. It was also quite liberating to shoot in super 35 mode for some of these as it meant my Otus 28mm has a 42mm field of view, which is one of my favorite focal lengths. At f1.4 the focus is so razor thin that I genuinely needed the Pyro 7 to accomplish these shots. I think it's likely the best value monitor on the market currently (at less than $1000 for both) since you have a very usable integrated monitor to go with it. You could go two Pyro 7 monitors as well, but a Pyro S supposedly has 10ms better latency than the Pyro 7 when transmitting and has the option to transmit to more receivers. More color accuracy with NISI FSNDs
0:00 - Opening 0:48 - Usage 2:07 - What are full spectrum NDs? 2:46 - Comparisons 4:23 - Closing remarks Dear Ghosts, So I did pay about 140-160 USD for my set because I'm in China, but I realized after making the video that the prices on Amazon are considerably higher, about $240 USD: https://amzn.to/3ZPs7HF . That's kinda a bummer, but it's up to you if you are willing to bite the bullet for these. At worst, it's about $90 per filter, which is still pretty good considering there are FSNDs that are $300 for one filter. I use EF glass so the Mofage Kippertie rear adapter NDs don't support my lenses, but if you use PL, you might want to look into those more. Although there are 3 NDs, I dont feel like I will personally use the ND1000 (10 stop), not because its not accurate, adding 100K is an easy fix, i just don’t need to shoot f1.4 in the middle of the day. But I still feel pretty good about my purchase, I pretty much use ND 6 and ND 2/3 stop the most anyway. As mentioned in the video, there does seem to be minor variation in quality, but these are still reasonably priced compared to the competition. And although there is minor shift, it’s evenly shifted so it’s very easy to correct unlike other NDs. These really are convenient to swap and there's no more vignetting, so the VND is officially out of my camera bag! I may write a long term review on my website if my opinions change. Stay tuned. A filmmaker’s most meaningful choice
0:00 - Intro 0:40 - Wide (Zeiss Otus 28mm) 3:04 - Compressed (Zeiss Otus 55mm) 5:35 - A Recipe for Disaster 8:15 - Choice 10:51 - Credits and Technical info Dear Ghosts, Thank you all for waiting, this video took longer than expected because of the script but I have learned a lot with each improvement. What a big file, over 110GB! Experimented a bit for this video. The focus for the video aside from two lenses was to film at f2 an-f4, which is my preferred aperture for Zeiss lenses. Really enjoying some of the images I got from the Zeiss Otus 55mm. The main downside of brining two lenses wasn’t the weight and pain of swapping. It was actually my different NDs, so for some clips you may notice some color shifting when switching back and forth. This will be solved in the future… Also the Blackmagic looks fantastic for certain scenes and less so for others. Not a fan of how it renders hair and skin especially for closeups, I much prefer the texture on the Sigma FP. But there are some situations where the Blackmagic looks better. When you have good lighting or bright sun I think the Blackmagic shines, particularly indoors when you have window lighting. That’s also why I graded this project brighter and more standardly, though I usually prefer a dimmer grade. I lost my mind, forgot about banding and got too cocky for the lowlight in the last section though. I’ve always felt in these dark scenes that the Blackmagic starts to really feel like Arri. The gyro stabilization is also very good, something about the shape of the pocket body makes it so I don’t even need stabilization, its shape makes it less prone to micro jitters. Colorgrading is also very pleasant on the Blackmagic. I was able to utilize my CleverLUTs and I like how it turned out with the exception of some nighttime scenes where I really screwed up WB. I set WB for the sky, but I should have done it for the skin. The LUTs have been updated on the store as well, I used Sunset quite a lot for this video, it’s now my most used look. The music is also available on Patreon, I think I did a pretty okay job for this one. I initially wrote all 4 pieces as part of a whole theme, but they ended up diverging a bit. Still a ways to improve for more continuity between tracks. I’ve also made the video louder than previous videos. To be honest I think -14LUF standard is kind of too loud, if you have feedback for me that would be helpful in deciding. My voice might sound a bit monotone for this one because it was so long and I recorded it a few times. I can understand why people might not find the current style of voiceover appealing so maybe I’ll spice up the delivery in the future. Sound is just very difficult especially because I don’t have sound treatment and my environment is sonically unfriendly. There’s constant construction, thin walls, children and public singing that make recording a nightmare. But we persist! Hope you enjoyed this video, Tianjin was very fun, but a lot of places don’t allow filming, which is a shame. I will be diverging a bit with various shorter content in the future because I think each video taking a month to make is too long. As usual, let me know your thoughts in the comments while I'll keep jotting down in the video descriptions. I always recommend people to write out their thought process. A year of making cinematic music
Dear Ghosts, It's my channel's birthday and this is a selection work I'd like to share from my past year writing music from newest to oldest. I thought it might be useful as background music for some, i'd ideally turn off ads but I heard that would make the automatic ads even more intrusive for nearly a 2 hour video so this way i can control how many there are. I aim to keep improving and i hope it's fun for both you and me to see the progress I've made. Which soundtracks are your favorite? If you're interested in downloading these tracks, I've currently made the entire library available for $5 on Patreon, which includes all of the tracks here and more, currently about 60+. If you want to continue supporting me you can keep subscribing for monthly new music. You can also subscribe for one of the music licenses if you want to use these tracks for monetized content otherwise they are free to use non-commercially regardless of subscription under a Creative Commons license NC-BY as long as you credit me. How to ACTUALLY make anything cinematic
0:00 - Opening 0:19 - Story 1:33 - Camera Work 2:53 - The Scene 4:20 - Light Scavenging 5:42 - A Colorful Wardrobe 7:51 - Audio 9:28 - Passion 10:37 - Credits and technical info Dear Ghosts, I wanted to incorporate heavier more creative grades, but for any lighting video I think colorgrading can be extremely misleading so i kept it to a minimum for the lighting sections. The waterfall scene I used a new silvery look called CleverInkblot, check out my website if you are interested. This is one of my longer videos that I wanted to make to address a question I get a lot, "What is Cinematic?" "How do I get my videos to look more cinematic?" I think this word is overused and frankly hijacked by photographers, and I felt the need to give my own take. It was always really confusing for me too see what other Youtubers were saying to be cinematic, to me, the word means something that resembles a feature film. So here are 7 things I think are most important for modern visual storytelling. The topic is quite comprehensive and far reaching and as a result I found it very difficult to have a consistent tone throughout, but I think I managed to cover the main ideas, albeit a bit briskly. Like all my videos, I've put my words for you to judge on the screen and it's up to you to decide if i successfully demonstrated my points whether successfully or as an example of what not to do. I only wish I was able to improve upon the audio section and soundtracks, which I think were tonally adjacent at times, but if you like them you can download them by supporting me on Patreon. I I also upgraded to a Neumann U87ai, I have a mini review on my website, hopefully you can hear an improvement in overall audio quality. It's actually my most expensive purchase of all my equipment. https://patreon.com/cleverghost Other directorial notes: Mainly shot in Jiangxi on the Sigma FP and Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4. One or two scenes used the 55mm f1.4. Really looks like Master Primes for certain shots, a bit too sharp and probably could have used stronger softening, but maybe I'm comparing too much to my previous video. This one I primarily implemented f5.6, which I think has more DOF when you get pretty close. Each video is also a mini test for me on the aperture for each lens, maybe next time I will try f2.8 on the Otus, can't decide it if will be Blackmagic or the Sigma. I've been trying to decide whether I like Sigma or Blackmagic better, my last few videos are basically a personal camera/lens comparison, I think my conclusion is still Sigma is overall better, but there are some highlights and colorgrading preferences I find with the blackmagic. Sometimes it's not about which image is better, it's which feels better and the one that you like more, which isn't always the "best". I feel that way toward movies as well, there are great movies and then our favorites, not always ranked the same. I like having each video feel unique and the last one was a bit slower so I wanted something of a different pace for this one, but I wonder if that was best for this video. These videos are educational but they are also for me as I usually learn something by explaining it. I think presenting in my style, not really explain in detail but through demonstration instead, is a more practical and entertaining way but if you don't find the ideas communicated clearly I am listening. Bokeh Bad? Make your images less digital with cinematic blur
0:00 - Intro 0:52 - Mid detail 1:20 - Tilt shift blur 2:09 - Radial blur 2:57 - Radius blur 3:49 - In camera blur 6:05 - Cleverness 7:15 - Credits, technical specs Soundtracks: https://youtu.be/YkO_lqR1N_E https://youtu.be/qQNHzujN7to Dear Ghosts, The colorgrade is based off Burning (2019), which is a big inspiration for me and what I based this video off of. I turned it into a LUT for those interested called CleverNatura, which is really versatile and I applied it to 90% of this video as it works in all kinds of color palettes, day or night. Has a subtle Arri look, check out https://www.cleverghost.net/ for more info. So although I find myself using deep focus more, I still think bokeh is here to stay. A lot of filmmakers have been shifting toward shallow depth of field, even Nolan and Villeneuve and their respective cinematographers. There are some blurs that I didn't really go over such as softening from noise reduction and back/ear focus. Also when you go from 4k/6k to 2k or 1080p there is a pleasing softness, a lot of great movies are viewed in 1080p, the only problem is 1080p for youtube as compression softens and degrades the image but in an unpleasant way. Perhaps I'll save these for another day as I wanted to focus on these blurs. There's another benefit I didn't really touch upon, blur also conceals noise if that is something that plagues you. I imagine some netizens will still be skeptical, but sometimes you want to shoot wide open and sometimes you want deep focus, these tools can help you maintain sharpness consistency. Also I interchanged motion blur and rolling shutter blur, I hope you were able to decipher what I meant. Finally, I mentioned that radial blur is overpowering, but i do sometimes go over 3.0, about 3.2 when i want a very stylized swirl, just didn't make sense for this project. Also the order matters if you combine effects like tilt-shift and radial. Spend wisely. Aspect ratio is more impactful than you think
*There are consistent inaccuracies in some of the crops for the taller formats by about 200pixels due to the strange 16:10 resolution, they are proportionally correct relative to each other but the precise aspect ratio should be slightly wider: https://vimeo.com/956567722?share=copy Soundtracks: https://youtu.be/YjCx7fndAcM https://youtu.be/e9zFXZ-vt8s https://youtu.be/e8pUeEZ7xzw 0:00 - Intro 0:31 - Displays 2:00 - Negative Space 4:43 - The Final Frame 7:45 - Credits/technical info Dear Ghosts, Hurrah! My website is finally open to listen to all my remastered soundtracks! I have more content to add but the store is functional if you are interested in supporting me by purchasing my personal LUTs. Music licenses are finally available if you've been wanting to monetize your projects with my music. This will be available through Patreon, which I've designed so that everyone can enjoy, whether you just want to download and listen or use for commercial work without committing to a permanent subscription. https://cleverghost.net/ https://patreon.com/cleverghost So a few directorial notes for this project, although I emphasize 2.39, I also really like 4:3 and 1.43:1 - basically the formats that crop in and focus the attention more. I would like to add that I think that letterboxing still looks the most cinematic, but taller formats also look good in a different way. I personally think it suits more vloggy type content. Each scene is more like a photo, i hope i can resist the allure of 2.39 and try more of these formats for full length projects in the future. Some of the scenes may look a little cramped in 2.39 because I didn't film in open gate, I filmed 16:9 and cropped the sides to fit 16:10 so the framing might feel slightly off. Why 16:10 and not 16:9? I deliberated this quite seriously since 16:9 is the more popular monitor resolution. Since I as well as many Macbook users have 16:10 resolutions, I experimented with a base 16:9 resolution and the cropped height really couldn't demonstrate the strengths of taller resolutions on taller displays. But i think 2.39 for 16:10 with cropped sides was the lesser evil for 16:9 displays. I hope I was able to effectively demonstrate the differences despite whichever monitor you are using. This will surely look poor on mobile, but that is ultimately unavoidable, I may upload another 2.39 or 4:3 version if you ghosts request it. So which aspect ratio do you prefer? I only swapped cameras for the junkyard scene. Red is the BMCC6kFF and pink is the Sigma FP. Everything except macro was shot on the Milvus 35mm. I've been receiving a lot of comments about lens recommendations and i hope this video can answer some of those questions. The Milvus 35mm f1.4 is very impressive and my recommended lens for anyone that wants an image comparable to mine but doesn't want to spend the cash for an Otus. Mind you I havent received any free products (yet) and everything I have posted up to this point is my honest opinion. The lens is similar to the Zeiss Otus 28mm, but they are not the same. I would guess the lens is about 200-400k cooler, less contrast, less color accurate, and less 3d pop. Very slight. Color accuracy is the most valuable asset for me especially because i prefer naturalistic grades, however I would still totally use this lens because i prefer 35mm over 28mm. My favorite focal length is 40mm. This is a high value long term lens, and the best overall value to performance ratio in my opinion, can buy used for 800-1200 USD easily. Is this too wide? Zeiss Milvus 15mm f2.8
0:00 - Opening 1:02 - Features 3:16 - Image Quality 5:24 - Conclusion 7:17 - Credits, Tech Info, Lens test Soundtracks: https://youtu.be/MoX7e_H0ks8 Dear Ghosts, For the camera nerds that will inevitably ask, the macro and scenes with the blue jacket were shot with the bmcc6kff and the yellow and black jacket scenes were shot with the sigma FP. My copy was 4200rmb which is about 600 usd, there's wear on the lens hood, mount looks refurbished. Regardless, good performance, I think I was a little harsh in the video as I use superior Otus lenses for everything. The 15mm will be optically inferior compared to the rest of the set as it’s an extreme focal length. I’m quite fond of this lens already, very fun to use and the microjitters are less pronounced with such a wide focal length. I didn’t use stabilization to avoid crop to show you the full scope, however there are two or three scenes where I really messed up and had to use perspective stabilization. Also enjoyed the results with the monopod, will definitely try to use it more. Other Milvus lens review coming up when I get the chance to test it more. Absolutely recommend this lens, with the nano primes just released I doubt zeiss will upgrade the lineup anytime soon. The other ultra wides like the supremes are out of reach, nano primes look sharp but weird rendering also Sony e mount only, other options would be laowa12mm or sigma 14mm, once again the rendering on those don’t have the same zeiss pop, but if you don’t care about that look then those are some great alternatives. I was surprised to see this ended up being 20 minutes as I really skipped over a lot of ideas, I mean it's not as complex as it seems, these ideas are just instinctual but explaining it takes so much time. A lot of the ideas I implemented are very subtle and I'd guess the majority of people didn't notice and that's how it should be. I've watched some films like Poor Things where there's so much going on that it can be hard to focus on what's happening. I didn't want the cinematography to be too distracting for an already obscure short, but aesthetically pleasing framing I believe can still evoke subconscious feelings even if your audience doesn't notice it. My biggest disappointment was the story. Now I normally start shorts with an outline instead of a storyboard. However it's very important to be able to visualize the scene before it is shot so that things can run smoothly and efficiently. I knew exactly what I wanted to shoot and in what order, but you generally want to shoot chronologically as much as possible except when you need certain circumstances like lighting. I had two approaches to the story, I originally planned for Chili to take my place when waking up so that she would get murdered by me and then the film would cut with me approaching the shower, but I decided to try something riskier and emutate a dream loop of Chili becoming the dream caretaker and then falling asleep to wake up and then be killed by me and the cycle goes on. But i assumed the filmed ending the way it did would suffice. This short was a great learning experience and I think vocalizing my mistakes and progress will help for future shorts, always improve from experience. Talking head filmed with BMCC6kFF. The beauty of clipped highlights
0:00 - For Jack 0:28 - Shadows 1:21 - Light 2:35 - Hunter's Dream 5:38 - Expression 7:35 - Credits and Tech Specs Short film scene breakdown: https://youtu.be/x4EBA3q_EN8 Soundtrack: https://youtu.be/CwK_3S6Zzdw?si=YtQaNudIrXD-wMbC Jack: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyqRp3LP1Li29Iwva1tEPVg Dear Ghosts, Happy Lunar New Year! This video is dedicated to Jack, whom put this topic on the radar for me. Clipping highlights isn’t as underground as I made it out to be here. I’ve seen it in some big films like Minority Report, but most have not intentionally leaned into it as much as the films I’ve mentioned. Do I like this look? It’s really hard to say actually. I think in some cases it does actually look more cinematic than standard exposure, but I generally prefer more natural cinematography. I think a practical application for clipping is when you have boring flat shots in the daytime. I don’t think it has to be that bold either but this is my personal modern take without bloom or halation. I’ve simply presented the information as nuanced as I can, this as new to me as it must be for you, do you like it or think it’s terribad? YouTube compression was quite severe for this one so I had to crank up the noise reduction more than usual, but fingers crossed if there is an improvement, there should be banding, but it should have less movement and pixelation. Unfortunately skin might look more plasticky than usual. It’s also annoying that I had to regrade after a test upload, so shadows should be blacker than usual and in general higher contrast, which I believe is a look YouTube compression is a bit kinder towards. Regarding the Sigma FP, 8 bit colorwise is decent, slightly more muted when shifting exposure but the biggest drawback is banding and dynamic range. Dear Ghosts, Curses! After seeing the upload, i got trolled by yt compression. I knew i would have banding in the skies, but not THIS much. Hilariously, it's still not nearly as bad as trying to use grain to dither the skies, if you don't believe me here's a test with grain: https://youtu.be/4PHrHij-iZY I'll upload a HQ version anyway. Focus pulling for some shots is also a bit green as i got a new monitor. There are some inconsistencies with a few frames as I once again re-graded this project but ended up going back to the original again. So pardon a few frames with over contrast and saturation. Although i was very tempted to do a heavier grade, i ended up feeling that i should use rec709 to give a more natural representation. I am aware that i did not do blue hour justice, but i think you can still get the gist of it. Also here you can see the true dynamic range of the sigma FP. It's actually quite capable but the problem is colorshifting is noticeable when you overexpose. The super35 mode on Sigma is also very good and sharp, very surprising, not sure what magic is going on there. I don't want to start a war that some light is better than another, i've just watched some really beautiful films with natural light that i think has really changed my perspective so i hope this video can do the same for others as well. Although this video is meant toward cinematographers or beginners, I realize that I glazed over some crucial concepts, which in hindsight may be oversimplified. I didnt want to go into too much technical detail for each individual track, but i could just save that for another video. I intended to add guitar for the new soundtrack, however as I activated the fuzz i must have blown a circuit, will have to send it for repairs and i was unable to record but I hope you like the tracks regardless. Click the 3 dots and change your waveform scale type to HDR (ST.2084/HLG). I realize that this could cause more problems than the problems it fixes, but I think this video was still worth making as I haven't seen any reasonable solutions to banding and no one has discussed this topic on YT yet. YT compression is soul crushing and as technology changes, this might be the best path moving forward. I hope someone with bigger pockets can further delve into this rabbit hole, perhaps that could be me further down the line, but for now I just wanted to share what I have. Or, you know, just expose properly and film brighter stuff (I guess). Color management settings are not optimal, you can play around with input colorspace as well for your desired footage. Lays | BMCC6kFF Zeiss Otus 55mm f1.4
Dear Ghosts, This video was created as part of a 15s video competition but I extended it slightly for a spec ad. This is just for fun, a real spec ad i wouldn't make it as dark and contrasty. Had to be 15s, portray a betrayal/mundane surprise, one light maximum, handheld. BMCC6k color manipulation is great. Graded with CleverDark Lut. Resolution isn't everything. Sigma FP film emulation Zeiss Otus
Dear Ghosts, I normally don't like vintage looks for reasons i might cover in another video but I found the Sigma FP to have a very pleasing image when filming in 1920x1080p despite the pixel binning, which can be mitigated with grain. I used 16mm 50D grain and i think the results are quite nice. I had to resist the urge to add contrast, but there are some stylistic choices which I didn't compromise. I still wanted to shoot shallow aperture and I didn't want to use film stocks, i hoped you could see the texture more clearly. High end cameras like Arri for the longest time shot at 3.4k. I find that higher resolution often creates a sharper more digital feeling image. I even find myself adding blur as this creates the illusion of rounder thicker edges. In general, I still prefer a cleaner look, but I love trying new things. Hope you found these images to be of interest. Spend wisely. Also, I regraded the entire project 3 times because when i updated to 18.6 something changed about my Davinci Resolve presets, which affected how i saw my footage, which rendered completely different exposure from what I graded. But I'm kinda tired so this is what I will present, some parts will have unbalanced/strong contrast. Blackmagic need to change their model naming! Some other notes: in the camera comparison the fujifilm used F2.8 on apsc despite using a speedbooster, which is more like f4 on full frame, but i changed it for the second comparison f2.0, the depth of field still didnt feel quite the same. I don't find a speedbooster can recreate the same spatial depth of full frame anyway. Be aware that noise will seem better (or worse) on youtube because of YT compression. Battery is acceptable for non professional work. You can get away with 2 batteries a day or 1 for the afternoon if you shoot sparingly. File is 129GB. The only reason I make these tutorials is because people ask me for them so you better enjoy or you won't be seeing as much of them! Now this file is 85GB because i wanted to make it as high resolution as possible, but unfortunately i wasn't able to record the screen and grade at maximum quality without the computer catching on fire (excuse the fan noise) so there will definitely be suboptimal color and detail during the grade, which is why i mixed in the orginal "Final grade" so you can see the final result better. Some small edits were refined to speed up an already long video because i wanted to cover a variety of lighting and exposure situations. As for my comments on HDR, i just find HDR to make lighting too sourcey and sometimes even uncanny. You can also just raise exposure with camera raw tab. No NR or Grain for any clips. This is a simplified process and there is much more you can do with color, but i find that to be quite subjective and will get complicated very quickly as you have to balance many things so let's keep things simple when we can, Occam's Razor. Higher audio levels and more compression, different lighting, implementing more HDR. The reason I got this camera is because i wanted to have a new camera for my trip to Thailand. I was pleasantly surprised. *I received a comment so i want to clarify that this camera has anamorphic mode and desqueeze in the directors viewfinder, but you cannot record at the higher codecs like CDNG. Overall I prefer the video image quality over Fujifilm and I think it has narrative work potential. Fujifilm performs better in the day with highlight rolloff feeling better. Sigma better at night with great shadow roll off. It has a more slick, edgy vibe you’ll see from the David Fincher (red) look. When I upgrade cameras, I might still use the sigma just because of the incredible low light performance. It looks insanely good in low light with minimal noise and color shifting even at -3 EV, much better than Sony, which has pretty yucky noise pattern. This is hands down one of the best low light camera and will absolute crush nighttime and indoor scenes and could be a staple in your arsenal. But the problem is that highlight roll off feels pretty bad with this camera. If you clip shadows, the noise reduction also behaves erratically. It’s also made me appreciate the xh2s more especially as a macro camera. According to my Discord server, the photos from the Fujifilm and sigma look similar, maybe because I have the original files. I think they look quite different but that is up to you to decide. Oppenheimer | Zeiss Otus 55/28mm XH2S Metabones Speedbooster
Dear Ghosts, Zeiss Otus 55/28mm XH2S FullFrame Metabones Speedbooster. Music: Ludwig Göransson - "Can You Hear the Music?" "Oppenheimer" I have some big plans coming for this channel, lots of traveling and a new cinema camera on the horizon. I'm experimenting with a slightly different colorgrading style with less contrast, I wonder if you'll notice if its any better. I normally film a bit deeper but I wanted to try shooting at wider apertures than usual. The NDs I have arent very good, and the white balance is a bit all over the place as lighting conditions were unstable with the coming thunderstorm. 2.2:1 is slowly becoming my favorite aspect ratio as of late, I find it has just the right balance. Anyway I hope you enjoy the video, its fun to go back to my roots. Why Zeiss makes the best lenses.
0:00 - Opening 1:04 - Specs 3:03 - The "Zeiss" Look 5:54 - Intermission 6:50 - Conclusion 9:18 - Tech Info, Credits, End Dear Ghosts, Please bear in mind that since I am using a full frame lens on a super35 camera, I had to convert the apertures to full frame. There might be some slight error because f1.4 on full frame is around f1.0 on APSC and when selecting aperture on the xh2s my camera only returned s35 apertures. For this video I wanted to try something a bit different. As usual, YouTube compression obliterates dark footage and particularly makes it really hard to display the smooth bokeh on this lens, but you can still get a good feel for it in the stills. I can’t wait to revisit this lens for video when I upgrade cinema camera later. Vimeo if you want better quality: https://vimeo.com/860631112?share=copy For anyone not used to this focal length, I really prefer landscape orientation and getting some distance between the subject. For photos try to crop out a bit to appreciate the depth. I suggest trying f1.4 for a dreamy look, f1.8-2.8 for a professional look. Video, I really like f5.6 to f8 and f1.4 when I’m feeling ambitious. f2.8 & f4 are also decent. These are all full frame terms, so just go up a stop of light if you want to follow my advice for super35 cameras. F1 - 1.4 - 2 - 2.8 - 4 - 5.6 - 8 Although this lens is clean, I still argue it has character. The bokeh can be swirly, out of focus areas bloom with light, purple fringing is exists, focus fall off, and it doesn’t necessarily FEEL sharp because of the roll off. I don’t think clean and clinical are necessarily mutually inclusive characteristics, the roll off makes it very cinematic. It really is an artistic lens at f1.4 - it took me a few weeks to figure out how to capture images with this and appreciate the images. It’s an acquired taste, but if you can, give it a go. If you can’t afford it, the milvus line is nearly as good. That being said, although the lens is 4000USD retail, you can definitely hunt for used copies for 2000USD, i bought mine new around $2500 but thats just the nature of the Chinese marketplace. Finally, the lens isn't weather sealed, but it's not as delicate as it sounds, I've shot with the Otus lenses in the rain and the desert and as long as you don't expose it too much you could be fine, though the downfall of this lens would surely have to be dust and sand through the focus ring. This could be your final lens.
0:00 - Opening 1:02 - Specs 2:58 - Image Quality 5:28 - Conclusion 6:59 - Credits, Technical Info, Final Notes Dear Ghosts, Please use headphones! For all my videos, I put a ton of work into audio and music. I recently bought a Zoom F3 audio recorder, so you should notice higher clarity in the voiceover. I hope you enjoy the images, we spent 2 weeks in Japan and visited Toyko, Osaka, Fujisawa, Nagoya, Kyoto and Fukuoka. Fukuoka was our favorite. Now about the lens. I misspoke in the video, the focus throw on this lens is indeed short but at 120 and not 270 degrees. As you can see from the fireworks scenes, with the metabones or finger adapters I’m unable to focus to infinity. Also, only the Metabones Speedbooster causes the bokeh to appear more lemony, otherwise the bokeh is very circular. Everything in Japan including the photos were shot full frame with the metabones speed booster and only the opening and ending were shot apsc with the Fringer adapter. Actually I don’t typically like filming wide open, I normally like f2.8 or f5.6 but the best character of this lens comes out at lower apertures. The reason for the premium on this lens is the performance wide open. Apart for some small vignetting and softness, the image is just as immaculate at f1.4. I prefer to film cropped with the Fringer and photography with the speed booster using this lens. Other small notes, the lens hood is reversible. The girth of this lens makes it so you may have some trouble attaching it to some sliders or tripods, particularly with the metabones adapter since it also adds some height. BOTTOM LINE: Finally, who is this lens for? This lens has a strong artistic look. Subjectively, im actually not so sure it would be suitable for all professional projects that may benefit more from a clinical or sharper look. The Otus has immense style and a look you might associate with Netflix or higher production pictures, but this might not be a universal look for some. Why does no one do this for better handheld footage??
0:00 - Tests 3:04 - Stabilized rant 5:45 - Handheld rant Dear Ghosts, Trying to do some more informal content. Let me know what you think. I didn't compare it to a top handle because that requires dedicated gear, which you might not always have access to, and everyone has a tripod. Some errors that should be addressed is that the monopod could be more stable because it is heavier, but I don’t think that’s the case as when I used a heavy lens handheld in the beginning it was still noticeably bad. It’s possible that I walked at slightly different speeds but I think it’s very marginal. Also be careful if you use the monopod and don’t kick it by accident. I don’t know the physics of it, but I think a monopod distributes the weight differently, specifically on the Y axis which is typically the main cause of shocks from walking. Feel free for some expert to prove me wrong, I haven’t seen anyone talk about this method for stabilized shots. Spend wisely. Color grading could have been better but there’s so much content in this one so this is the best I could do before July 14th (Happy Birthday to Chili and the XH2S!). Rewatching the review, I think I’m a little bit harsh, maybe nitpicking a bit more than I need to because I feel obvious specs and conditions have been talked through in other reviews. I will say I spend a lot of time knocking down the cinematic aspects of the image. To be honest, this image with flog2 is surprisingly similar to Arri Log C, so with 14bit color along with the dynamic range, it is truly excellent. But when I refer to that missing cinematic look, what I’m referring to is the organic detail. The round, 3 dimensionality of an object feels flat like a photo. I can bring some of it back with the Zeiss Otus lenses 3d pop, but it still feels flat at times. Conversely it’s really great for macro esp being apsc. I shot some macro with the xt3, dynamic range suffered just barely but there’s less noise. In some circumstances, just use flog so you get less noise. So a topic which I deleted from the video out of brevity is “Why Fujifilm?” The experience of shooting fujifilm is the most fun you can have: Pick up and shoot, and take amazing jpegs straight out of camera with no editing. It’s a great camera but an even better product. But that’s where things kinda changed with the xh2s. If I were to recommend another camera I might recommend the xs20, Lumix S5ii, or Blackmagic. Summary: I like this camera a lot, and it’s pretty sick that you have internal ProRes with an amazing flog2 and great photos. But that brings me to the dealbreakers with this camera. Ignore everything else: 1250 base ISO is too high, flog2 noise is suffocating at times (and its pretty much unusable at high frame rates) and DAVINCI RESOLVE STILL CANNOT COLOR SPACE TRANSFORM FLOG2 SO FUJIFILM AND BLACKMAGIC SETTLE YOUR DIFFERENCES AND WORK TOGETHER TO GIVE US OUR 1 YEAR OVERDUE SAUSAGE Spend wisely. This lens is why you would want APSC.
0:00 Intro 0:44 Size & Handling 1:49 Photos 2:33 Video (Short Film) 4:58 Conclusion Less YT banding and compression: https://vimeo.com/842120717?share=copy Dear Ghosts, The 23mm f2 has been my workhorse lens for the past 2 years. It’s served me well. For photos, the 23mm f1.4 LM is much better but for video I’m kinda on the fence. I think this lens is softer and will give you a more organic image. A big characteristic is that this lens looks better as you stop down since it is never too sharp. I'd even say some of my favorite shots are at 5.6 or f11 so this lens is ideal when you want to shoot outdoors and you don't like NDs. This is probably the best value lens you can get and it’s definitely a recommend for anyone especially with an XT camera. The LM lenses on my xt3 always felt awkward and front heavy. I guess if I had to compare this lens with another lens, it’d be similar to a contax Zeiss. I also think it matches quite well with my Otus because of the contrast. On the xh2s, I think tracking should be 0 and speed -3 should give you pretty good results, in the short film I used -5 speed, a bit slow at times. Regarding music I made slightly edgier tracks this week, I think it could offend maybe 10% of you but I just enjoy thriller and horror theme. I upgrade to Logic Pro so I’ll be able to make more cinematic tracks coming up. I also changed mic position and EQ so you might notice more clarity in the voiceover, but may be lacking some intimacy and oomph, what do you guys think? The B roll is evolving, I have other ideas to incorporate for future videos and I’m excited since I have a good vision on how I want to do macro in the future. I am almost certain that I will get egregious banding on this video because of YT compression but I hope it’s not too devastating (edit: Yup, it is). Normally I would have gone harder on the color grade for the short film but I think it’d be pointless as I already made it brighter than I would have liked for YouTube. I shot day for night to get less noise, which is really easy, just add some blues and cyans to the shadows and lower the highlights. Hopefully I’ll get less noise and less banding when uploading but I’m so skeptical. I’ll be uploading to Vimeo once my monthly limit resets in case you want to better see what the original quality looks like. The short film is based off Little Nightmares 2, one of the most artistic video games. Mono has been trapped and slowly loses his sanity. I hope to make a part 3 in the future for the climatic reunion. Chili will be done with classes next week and so that’s why you only have me. I have some cool films planned for the future so stay tuned but you can always give me a suggestion on any topics. Moving forward I hope you guys can support me as I like making videos but it’s a bit tough to make one every week. I’d ideally like to make more content but I think most people wouldn’t watch me just making regular content and talking heads. I’m also curious what you guys think of the music and audio, Im considering building an audio and music library for people to use. The only reason I started making these tracks is because I couldn’t find a suitable theme and one of my hard work videos got removed. I hope you guys never have to experience that. As always, don't forget to spend wisely. Colorblind Guy attempts to make a LUT.
LUTs available for puchase on the store website: https://cleverghost.net/ Dear Ghosts, It's my first time doing a documentary. I used the xt3 as a B cam, and that led to a few problems. I originally intended this to be open gate because I think that format is really fun. I don't think 2:39 letterbox is particularly humorous so i knew from the get-go I wanted a different format. Then when i went to shoot i realized that the xt3 can't shoot open gate so i ended up with the typical 4k DCI. Since i can only use flog1 on the xt3 i ended up clipping some highlights. Regarding documentary style lighting i find natural lighting to be more lighthearted. When I used the the Amaran 200D i put it directly above at a 30% angle, but i think maybe a normal 60% angle would have been better and less dramatic. Another thing to note about documentaries is they always have the person of interest on the right side of the screen. I don't know why that is. I wonder if in Japan they would reverse that direction. I personally find that right-side interviewee just feels right and when i recollected on other interview and dialogue formats, i think it's also mostly the same. I wonder about the psychology of it. If i were to put feelings to words I think having a subject on the left often feels more like an aggressor stance. The exception is late night and live TV where they have the host on the right and the interviewee on the left. What are your thoughts? Spend wisely. This is probably Fujifilm's best lens.
Headphones recommended :) 0:00 - Intro 0:34 - Photos 0:47 - Video 3:00 - Comparison 3:59 - Conclusion Better quality: https://vimeo.com/835501164?share=copy Dear Ghosts, I have a newfound respect for macro B roll. I have to say it is actually kind of a pain in the ass and probably the least enjoyable aspect of these reviews but I understand why it is necessary. Although for these reviews I probably do want more modern and professional stabilization, I feel as though for some static macro shots, it ends up just looking like a photo. I am curious as to what you all think about the macro shots having a bit more handheld movement than the norm. I know it is kind of associated with my style, but I think sometimes it can be distracting. I think the music I made was better than last review, but it’s kind of difficult making 3+ tracks for each of these reviews. I’d love for content to be bespoke for every video but I don’t think it’s sustainable in the long term. That’s one thing that’s really fun about these videos. I’m still experimenting with different styles and themes and I’m able to do so since my channel is still quite small. I think like many other ghosts I used to be afraid of putting out content that isn’t my best but I realized that it’s actually a blessing to not be at full potential. Kind of like playing music live, once you get enough of a following you don’t have that freedom to just do whatever you want, you have a responsibility to entertain. If you only output perfect content when you’re ready then there’s no progression. Your future content has no room to improve, it’s a good reminder that it’s about the journey rather than the destination. 33mm f1.4 LM notes: So I daresay this is one of Fujifilm’s most cinematic modern lenses, if not their best. I think the XF 35mm f1.4 is also a cinematic lens, but in a vintage way. I do think that that lens is so special even for video, but I couldn’t deal with the autofocus. I obviously returned it because it wasn’t for me, so that should give you a better idea of what I consider “cinematic”. Of course the 33mm is going to look more digital and worse than the Otus for video, but I think the results were still quite good when you don’t have a direct comparison. You know sometimes I'm too big of a proponent of contrast, but I really do find low contrast vintage vibes less attractive even if it is more organic. I think i might prefer the 33mm for photos but I'll have to do more testing. The AF is perfect for photography but i guess my settings aren't optimized for video, overall it's a great lens with good sharpness and nice bokeh. I don't like shooting with this lens for video at f1.4, I think f2.8 is the sweet spot. Now I know most people prefer lenses with character but I prefer to leave the character in the color grade. If you watch modern films, most high production films have clean images otherwise it can distract from the story. I’ve been experimenting with different color grades recently. It’s actually hilarious, I recently found out a silver lining with my colorblindness. Because I can’t differentiate hues very well, I’m able to see contrast and color luminance more clearly than most people. I think that’s one of my biggest strengths when colorgrading and I only realized it when asking Chili what was the difference between two colors. She couldn’t tell, but I could tell there was a slight change in saturation. I now know why I have a good eye for lighting and exposure so don't let your insecurities stop you. By the way, never again shoot Eterna for quick turnarounds. For the first set of videos at the university, I filmed in Eterna because I thought I could do less work - nope you lose so much more time trying to make corrections. Anyhoo I did my best but the color was really hard to work with, dynamic range also suffered quite a bit, after that it was all flog2. Spend wisely. How I Convert FLog2 to Rec709. (No Luts)
Dear Ghosts, A lot of you have asked for a colorgrading guide so here is a very basic flog2 conversion i use. I may do a more comprehensive one in the future once Flog2 is supported. Surprisingly I haven't seen anyone post about this topic. ArriLogC is the best match for FLog2 I think, though you may have to correct some red, green tones. I've uploaded a petition for Flog2 to be supported natively in Davinci Resolve, though my channel is quite small i thought I would try anyway. If LEICA L LOG can be supported, there's no reason FLog2 can't be one year after release. If all 750 of you sign it and share it to some others to then maybe we can reach our 1000 signature goal. Fuji XH2s Full Frame Metabones Speedbooster | Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4
Music by: Øneheart & Reidenshi - Snowfall Dear Ghosts, Edit: The reason I didn't opt for the Cine version speedbooster was because of 3 reasons. I don't use follow focus, I just use my hands (i am a weird handheld purist) so i dont need the super tight lock (the normal version locks fine for general use). The non-cine version only requires one hand to change lenses, which is useful for run and gun. Finally, the price and ergonomics. The locking mechanism on the cine version crowds finger space near the grip, making it uncomfortable. I wanted to test full frame more and film something similar to what I used to do except this time with the metabones speed booster. I think when you use full frame you shouldn’t typically go above f5.6 otherwise it beings to look indistinguishable from s35. It’s risky though, since more shallow aperture means background blur can causes banding issues for YouTube. It also makes pulling focus much harder but I don’t mind, focusing by hand is so enjoyable with the Otus lens. Actually I think manual focus is the most fun you can have with photography, but that’s for another video. I feel like the whole purpose of full frame is the depth of field and it feels more worthwhile when shooting shallower apertures. Otherwise, for my style of videos I don’t see enough points to fully transition full frame. I’ve noticed that this speed booster causes some distortion and also some chromatic aberration. But it also exceeded my expectations and gave me so much light, at iso 3200 you get more light than what you can see in real life. Regarding color grading, I converted flog2 files to Arri Log C, which has tremendous dynamic range, but it’s kinda offset by the fact that the xh2s can only go down to 1250 iso. You NEED an ND filter if you want to shot flog2, otherwise you have to shoot at f11 or after sunset. With Arri log C it is tough to get the skin tones right, i think i did ok aside for the consistency. It’s also annoying that there is no native conversion for flog2 yet in Davinci Resolve, I mean Leica’s log profile is already supported. LEICA. Yes, the photo camera with barely any video specs. C'mon, Fujifilm and Davinci! My most recent videos should look a lot better as I only realized recently my color space management was off, causing desaturation when uploaded to youtube. The only problem now is banding, which is difficult to avoid when you shoot shallow apertures. Overall I love my current setup. I don’t like rigs, as I think it takes the fun out of shooting so I will probably stick with the setup for a while until Blackmagic releases a new camera, hopefully with native EF mount. My mouth waters at the idea of having an even more organic image paired with this lens. Spend wisely. I made the Fuji XH2s Full Frame. Is it better for Cinematography? Metabones Speedbooster
0:00 - Intro 1:32 - Comparison 2:22 - Full frame video 3:38 - Super35 video 5:15 - APSC photos 5:41 - Full frame photos 5:58 - Conclusion Dear Ghosts, I wanted to test a few new things but it ended up being a bit jambalaya with the audio, music and consistency but let me know if this overall direction was enjoyable. I didn't want to get too verbally technical so I'll leave some more detailed thoughts below. I'm using the Metabones Speedbooster .71x EF - XF so I'm getting 1.07x crop, which is essentially full frame, though the 28mm fov (18mm APSC) actually ends up being around 20mm APSC. A better comparison might be a FF and APSC lens with equivalent focal lengths but unfortunately Zeiss doesn't make a 40mm FF lens and other lenses would of course have completely different contrast and overall look. The reason I didn't opt for the Cine version speedbooster was because of 3 reasons. For cropped look I use the Fringer Pro 2 adapter, which actually serves as an extension tube, which is super useful for macro shots. The drawback is that the image will be considerably less sharp and you can't focus to infinity. I'm all about modern looks but if I'm being completely honest I think full frame loses charm particularly with face proportion, people often look too slim, even sickly. There are some films where you need scale and scope, like Dune, where larger format is very fitting, but there are some recent films where I think it even detracted from the film. I understand why it was used for John Wick 4 (color, low light, 4th film variety) but for some films like Mass (drama), Dungeons and Dragons, I found the experience unfitting. Am i the only one that feels like large format should be used in niche cases and not as a standard? It's a great look for general video but for cinematography I find it less compelling. When shooting FF I always felt compelled to shoot shallower DOF because when you can see so much of the background and its so deep it doesn't look very pleasing. Also grain looks weird to me on full frame, but i did it anyway so you can see. Actually I shot a bunch of scenes unoptimally and pushed to the limit so you can see the breaking points. I will say that FF at night is incredible wide open, though f1.4 APSC is still acceptable. When I watch Bladerunner 2049, I think to myself, wasn't this the perfect genre to shoot full frame? But as we all know it wasn't necessary and was perfectly shot. Super35 to ME is more cinematic, though I don't really like anything narrower than 35mm cropped, unless 40mm anamorphic. I also want to clarify what I mean by closeness and intimacy, what I mean is the crop not the distance to the subject. If any of you ghosts like watches, an analogy that comes to mind is quartz vs mechanic watches. I’d say that full frame is just like that, better accuracy but super35 might just have a little bit more soul like that mechanical watch. I'll have to shoot more full frame shorts to get a better feel, maybe I'll have to add more suitable lenses to get a better feel because 28mm ff is too wide for my taste. Overall, if you have full frame lenses metabones works well and has much better electronics than the fringer as well, though occasionally the connection is wonky. I particularly love it for photography. Get the standard version unless you need follow focus. As always, spend wisely. The Mangroves Abduction Scene | Fuji xh2s 23mm f1.4 LM
https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/823978098/privacy Dear Ghosts, I’ve been dying to shoot more with my cinema lens but I decided to shoot nearly this entire video with the 23mm f1.4 LM. The image quality is not as cinematic but 23mm is versatile for any scene and AF is necessary when filming and acting yourself (killer is me). This lens performed admirably and most shots are nice and clean (before compression) particularly at 1.4 but you won’t always have that luxury. You can decide for yourself, I pushed this lens' image - is this the look you want to achieve? In some ways I like using gear like this, because it’s something that everyone has access to. I believe in accessibility - like a standardized test, you can actually compare your work with others working with the same lens and camera. So if you haven’t guessed this short is heavily inspired by David Fincher. Thriller is one of my favorite genres and I wanted to see how much I could push myself. His signature look is accomplished through avoiding pink tones in skin so I subtracted red and blue to create this green tint. I also decided to shoot in daytime sun, which is something I rarely do because shooting in the day feels more unpredictable, very fitting for this thriller style plot. One way this will feel different compared to other projects of mine is I focused more on objects and other parts of the body. Directing your focus is a very important aspect of immersion. For example if someone were to put hold you at gunpoint, I don’t think you would be pay attention to their face very much, you’d focus on their gun. Audio is still low quality while I figure things out so I purposely limited dialogue. This hopefully allows ghosts to focus more on background noises adding to some immersion and suspense. The man practicing his instrument in the background was a good touch. The idea that if you’re begging for help and no one will come to your aid despite being so close is true dread, just like those dreams where you can’t punch or run from a monster. Chili had to return to her studies and some scenes and pacing are a bit too fast, we basically had 3 hours but it was still smooth because I had already planned it in my head. Limits bring forth creativity. Regarding music, I just use the music I made for the last video as I originally wanted to combine the review with this film but I ran out of time so I guess this is part 2 of the 23mm f1.4 LM lens review. REVIEW: Sharp, clean and modern. I shot at f8, 5.6, 2.8 then 1.4. I don’t think it will flatter skin especially for female subjects, maybe at f1.4, it should do just fine for men or like in this video, more aggressive and dramatic styles. You might want to consider changing your typical contrast levels as a result. The AF actually surprised me, it knew what I wanted to do even with no one behind the camera if I set the AF box correctly, bouncing in and out. It’s a super clean high quality image, but you'll have to rely on your color grading, which I guess most people will not have the confidence for. I will only recommend the f2 for consumers and the LM only if you’re making money with the lens OR if you intend on it being your ONLY lens. If you have ANY other lenses like the 18, 16 or 33 the 23mm f2 is enough. The 23mm is like a swiss army knife, but you may not need its versatility if you already have a great screwdriver and knife. Therefore this lens is great for photos and travel and it’s a big jump in pro quality. It boils down to this - if I were to pay you to shoot my wedding or commercial I wouldn’t want you to use the f2 version, I’d want the f1.4. If you can get it below retail I still wouldn’t recommend it for the smaller cameras like xt3, the xh line is perfect or maybe xt5 since it’s 40mp. It's ideal for AF, vlogging, talking head, commercial work. It’s a conundrum, I spent one week flip flopping if I would return this lens decided to keep it for travel and the AF. This might be the sharpest video lens from Fujifilm.
Better quality: https://vimeo.com/835293985?share=copy Part 2: https://youtu.be/ia3ysiEItDc Dear Ghosts, In summary, this 23mm f1.4 LM lens is very sharp and future proof. High resolution, sharpness, lower contrast, colder color shift, decent AF, this might be my future travel lens. I originally tried to return this lens because I thought it would be too sharp for video and the contrast was weak for photos but I ended up keeping it when actually comparing the lenses. Maybe I'm talking out my ass but for photos the image quality is on par with GFX lenses, that's how sharp this one is. However it isn't the best lens for video despite that I think this focal length is invaluable. Honestly the newest LM lenses are near perfect, which may be good for me because I like a clean look but maybe not for you. Spend wisely. I uploaded around 7 videos testing settings prior to this one and I tried my best to solve banding. Every video esp. lowlight I've seen on this platform has this problem, but mine is particularly pixelly since i add grain. I've uploaded the file to vimeo so you can better see what it looks like without the banding issues: https://vimeo.com/835293985?share=copy Audio is also a bit scuffed, i'll be stronger for the next video. Hopefully you enjoyed this review, if you don't like it you can blame my audience for suggesting i put more production quality into my reviews :) For some talking head shots I used the Otus to film so you can compare what the Fuji lens has to offer. At the end of this review you can see a preview of a short story I made with the 23mm LM lens, please be patient as I'm still working on it. Special thanks to Johnny for his input for this video! LITTLE NIGHTMARES - Short film | Fuji xh2s Zeiss Otus
Watch without YT compression: https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/823960959 Dear Ghosts, This is part 1 of the Little Nightmares series I plan on making. Actually I have quite a few short films planned, but I'm waiting on Chili to be done with her semester but I think the wait will be worth it. Thriller and horror are some of my favorite genres. We watch quite a lot of horror films together and i was pleasantly surprised to hear that even Chili found the video to be discomforting when I showed her the final results. This short trailer, film, video, amalgam is based on the video game, which is equally artistic. To create the nightmare sequences I particularly used a vignette effect, which i hope wasn't overdone, in tandem with a dreamy feel by also adding blur. One reason why i mainly use handheld for other work is because I find stabilized shots unnaturally eerie. So I implemented a slider to fully utilize that effect to my advantage. I think a slider is a great cinematic tool that more people should use. I recommend 80-120cm. Could I shoot an entire film by myself? Well, I'm going to try. One problem is audio, which i can't record professionally while filming. It's a shame, because I actually value audio extremely highly as I'm also a musician. Audio adds more mood and emotional cues than visuals can so don't slack on it. The audio is this film was made with Garageband. Keep it simple, anyone can make music. Make sure you transition audio smoothly if you have different audio levels across clips. Be creative with your audio as well. I made the signal broadcast sound sliding a chair across the floor. You'd be surprised where many sound effects you hear from feature films actually come from. I know that YT compression isn't kind for low light videos but this is a new low for me. The original is fine and even after I reuploaded with stronger grain and it made only a marginal difference. Remove noise you get more banding - less banding and you get more noise. Maybe it's an Apple or ProRes thing. I recorded ProRes LT and exported ProRes HQ so if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong please let me know. I see many other YouTubers with the same problem, though not as bad as splotchy pixelly banding as this one. xh2s. I originally didn't plan on buying this camera on release until I learned more about flog2. This log profile is a bigger upgrade from flog than you think, except for the NOISE and BANDING. Putting that aside... flog2 is so flexible to grade and the dynamic range creates pretty smooth roll off. I'm quite happy with the images I got, though i really do hope to upgrade to a cinema camera in the future. The sensor still hasn't scratched that organic image I'm looking for. But then again maybe no camera can come close to Arri. Also remember, lighting is everything. The most important tool you have as a filmmaker are your eyes. With your eyes, you can find natural cinematic lighting. With your eyes you can find the right frame. Your eyes will allow you to find the right combinations, allowing you to make the perfect lens purchase. Even all the best tools and technical knowledge will all be wasted if you can't visualize the scene. I'm colorblind and that hasn't stopped me so there's nothing stopping you. Best prime lens for Fujifilm video? | Fujifilm XH2s, Zeiss, 23mm & 33mm
0:00 - Intro 0:35 - Blind test focal length 1:29 - Test 1 Studio lighting comparison 3:42 - Test 2 3D depth & microcontrast 4:12 - Test 3 Natural lighting 0 EV 5:08 - Test 4 High contrast dynamic range 5:35 - Test 5 Random tests ETTR Dear Ghosts, This is the first lens review from me so suggestions and comments are appreciated. I'm not a professional by any means and the results are not scientific but it's the type of lens review I would want to watch. There are quite a few uncontrolled errors so take the results as general performance. I intentionally decided to fix the tripod location to give you a sense of the different perspectives but maybe I should have also included a test or two to equalize the focal length perspective juxtaposing bokeh and microcontrast better. The blind test may also have been redundant… This video is already 80GB for only 6 minutes so I've condensed the analysis within the image comparison. Please note that these lenses will perform differently in real world situations and would obviously look better so don't make too rash decisions based on this review. I don't sell anything yet and my channel isn't monetized yet so you may trust that results are unbiased. Talking head intro shot with 16mm f1.4. In summation, the 23mm f2 is the best value, and contrast is even higher than the Otus at certain apertures - has drawbacks of softness and color fringing, good for vintage feels, best aperture is f2.8 and deeper. The 23mm f1.4 is too sharp for video but great for photography though still nice at f1.4. The 33mm f1.4 is amazing, best recommended lens for Fujifilm video and nice compression though occasionally flat and lacking depth and dimension. f2.8 is particularly great on this lens. Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4 has the most premium look giving you incredible contrast and depth, though expensive and heavy. The lens is very color accurate but lacks saturation, which is okay because Fujifilm has good color science and simulations which address this. My eye isn't as trained but it appears in video the Otus has better microcontrast (look at freckles and nose shadow tonality) but when i took pictures i found the 33mm to be superior (perhaps there are optimized camera corrections). This lens has the right amount of sharpness with soft roll-off so technically the acutance is lower than the newer Fujifilm lenses. This gentle sharpness is great for video but not for photography. I consider the Otus more of a video lens (aside from focus breathing) but you can still get dreamy photos with amazing depth and artistic rendering and bokeh, which may be even more shallow* since it is a FF lens. Not sure why but i find f2.8 to be meh, all other f-stops particularly f1.4-f2 are quite nice. At the time of 3.01 firmware, my recommended AF video settings: Eye AF right 23mm f2: 0 tracking, -3 speed 23mm f1.4: +4 tracking, 0 speed 33mm f1.4: ? tracking, -1 speed (this lens AF is jumpy and nervous) Errors & Variation: - In lens test 1 focus possibly slightly missing the eye for the 23mm f2, not very sharp. - Although all scenes at the same f stop used the same color grading contrast, the 23mm f2 @f2 had to be adjusted from f1.4 of the other lenses so the results will be different. The exposure may be different for the Otus f1.4, which might* be shallower since it is full frame? The white balance wasn't locked and was slightly off for the focus breathing test. - The Otus is very heavy and when mount on the tripod lowered the center of the frame, also shaking when adjusting focus. - Fringer pro 2 lens adapter also functions as an extension tube reducing sharpness for the Otus - Rendering differences will be exaggerated on the 33mm since the subject is more zoomed in - There is considerable noise in test 3 since it is exposed lower. Lots of fog that morning with the window open, results will be hazier. - The 23mm f1.4 might be hazier due to different filter. - Test 5 has WB and Contrast adjusted, focus missed, high variance here Love, CGC Store website: https://cleverghost.net/ Support me: https://patreon.com/cleverghost Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markoyanli/ Chili - https://www.instagram.com/cleverghostchili/ Business inquiries - markyanli@gmail.com Discord community - https://discord.gg/FTQAyWmavs Gear: All opinions expressed here are my own. This lens is TWICE the price and size of the Fuji xh2s
Dear Ghosts, This Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4 EF lens is massive but I love it. 1300g compared to the old 180g 23mm f2 but the weight does adds stability. I thought I would have trouble with manual focus but the ring is super smooth and such a pleasure, even fun I might add. I missed focus a few moments in this video but it was basically my 3rd filming with this lens. I’ve been eyeing and waiting on this lens to pair with a future Blackmagic camera but I decided not to wait any longer. I think it’s possible Fujifilm could release a cinema camera with the upcoming CMOS organic sensor and Blackmagic could upgrade the sensor so I ultimately invested in a premium lens for when either camera is released. So this lens is extremely clean. Little chromatic aberration, strong depth of field since it is a full frame lens, and it has very accurate colors, though a bit unsaturated, which is no problem for video. For photos, surprisingly I often prefer my other lenses actually. I don’t know if that means Fuji glass is amazing or this lens is overrated. The primary reason I bought this lens is because it has amazing roll off that adds a 3d pop you won’t get from Fuji glass. But to be honest if you’re not looking for micro-contrast this lens is not worth the weight nor price tag for enthusiasts. I wasted my money so you don’t have to but I’m not returning this lens because that extra pop satisfies my cinema senses and I’ll be able to use this lens for future cameras. Now a bit about the xh2s…a bit of a disappointing camera and I’ll hopefully make a review once I have more experience. What is relevant for this video is that flog2 is incredibly noisier than flog. I love the dynamic range, I love ProRes and I can’t wait to use 14bit color once Davinci supports flog2 conversion…HOWEVER there is so much noise (even in photos) compared to flog on the xt3 where you basically need to use noise reduction in post production. In this video I didn’t use any noise reduction so you could see for yourself. FORTUNATELY Fujifilm magic has somehow managed to make the noise almost grain-like, which is why I didn’t need to add grain in color grading. Please let me know what you think of the noise - is it unpleasant or like film grain? What a $4k lens looks like on the Fujifilm xh2s
Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4 EF Dear Ghosts, I was tired of waiting for blackmagic to release the new cinema camera I wanted so I instead invested in glass instead. To be honest, glass is a really important investment, sometimes more-so than the camera body which is getting diminishing returns. I bought this 4 thousand dollar lens at a good discount because once I eventually upgrade to a cinema camera I'll be able to still use this lens. This focal length is different than what I usually use but I think 28mm is actually the best focal length for feature films with narrative. I'll make a future post about it. Anyway I'll make some more reviews of the camera and a few different lens in future posts. But for now if you are unable to see what this lens does, it provides more depth, making the image more 3 dimensional compared to normal fujifilm glass which is incredibly sharp but the images stay on the 2d plane. This is particularly important for me using fujifilm cameras since this sensor is lacking that 3-dimensional roll-off and texture you get with cinema cameras and other full frame cameras. Please note that I used very little contrast and saturation in post editing and you can still clearly see the dimensionality of the guitar. Fun Davinci Resolve Effects
Music: Garbage Man The Cramps Dear Ghosts, Different tools for different jobs, a lot of people use Final Cut or Premiere video editors because they provide better effects and transitions compared to the image and color focus of Davinci Resolve. I thought I'd test some basic effects in Davinci Resolve to see if it can compete, you can be the judge. I'd like to preface that I normally don't like heavily editted videos, YT can be oversaturated with fancy videos with epic transitions and effects, which is cool and requires skill, but I prefer to focus on the image itself. That being said I wanted to challenge myself with something different. Here are some basic and easy effects I like to use for Davinci Resolve: Timestamps (for my future reference): 0:00 - Transition: Arrow Iris - A curtain open like effect 0:04 - Transition: Film Strip - Match the effect Effect: Film Damage - Old timey film without the color distortion or blur 0:10 - Transition: Circles - The title disappears before the picture Transition: Heart - The picture disapears with a corny heart to fit the retro punk aesthetic 0:11 - Effect: Analog Damage (1970s) - Create an old MTV vibe 0:15 - Crop 2:39:1 Aspect Ratio - Add a cinematic movie feel, since it is a clean image with nice lighting. No transition prior because it will ruin the quality of a more cinematic image. 0:19 - Transition: Rotate 90 - Previous image had unique orientation, rotate suitable to change orientations. Effect: Analog Damage (1960s B&W) - Oven and kitchen decor fitting toward the 1960s 0:22 - Effect: Flicker Addition - There is a lamp in the scene Effect: Old VHS - Takes the clinical edge and seriousness out of a ridiculous scene 0:26 - Effect: Film Grain (35mm 200T) - Nice lighting requiring cinematic touch and modern film grain type. Letter box effect 2:39:1. No more transitions following, a bit overkill and tiring 0:29 - Effect: Watercolor - Makes the background ads and signs more visible. Cartoon vibe suitable for vibrant scene 0:32 - Effect: Motion Trails - Zany and disorienting feel to create illusion subject is falling in dire help 0:46 - Effect: Analog Damage (1980s) - MTV effect for cheap scene 0:53 - Effect: Analog Damage (1960s Color) - Square format contrast with previous and following letterbox scenes 0:56 - Effect: Prism Blur - Tunnel vision effect to create an illusion of brush spinning intensity 1:00 - Effect: Stylize (Scream) - Obliterate texture and detail for style, only suitable for simple or geometric backgrounds. 1:03 - Effect: Lens Blur - Add bokeh to isolate subject, creating more focused and dire atmosphere 1:10 - Effect: Analog Damage (security camera) - Suitable for purely white and black scene. Also looks detentionary 1:14 - Effect: Analog Damage (1980s) - Variety, square format contraster with following letterbox format 1:24 - Effect: Analog Damage (Clean VHS) - Grungy feel, almost serial killer vibe, suitable to conclude this punk rock music video Conclusion: I chose punk rock music because of the zany clips, some of the scenes were quite cheap and corny so I thought utilizing retro MTV source images could be nostalgic and fitting. Some of the natural and cinematic clips might break the immersion, but i think it offers a good balance. Overall I don't think the editing is too distracting and actually quite complementary. Obviously I'm using basic effects and transitions, but I think it was enough to make a fun music video. Final Cut and Premiere are better for this style of editing and have more premium effects and tools, but I think I did satisfactory using only simple effects. In the future I might try more complicate effects with overlays and tracking but it's not really my style, what do you guys like? THE CAVE | Fuji XT3 Short Film
*CC available Dear Ghosts, Regarding poetry and film, ambient music works best. Any narration pairs well with drone-like audio. Even if pretentious or incomprehensible, in poetry the important thing is to use vivid imagery. Normally I don't add any reverb for these intimate style narrations, but I found it acceptable given the setting of the film. Narration techniques: I would say I don't usually like my voice, but I did a pretty good job on this one. People typically can't stand their own voice, so if you need confidence I can suggest filters. My favorite ones are telephone and fuzz. If you want this filmic, pondering style narration, I would suggest a filter with higher compression. The midtones should be higher to have more presence, as if the speaker is whispering in your ear. The higher the compression / midtones, the closer the narration feels, the more it feels like thoughts of the speaker (Take the narration of The Batman 2022 as an example). You typically don't want reverb, though I used it for this one to resemble the cave. A reason why your voiceover might be bad is not neessarily because you have a bad voice. I don't think I have a charismatic voice so i compensate by speaking more softly, almost whispering, like just waking up. Zendaya in Dune, Pattinson in The Batman, have pretty ordinary voices, but with rhythm and pitch they have charismatic monologues. They key is to not overdo it and make it too dramatic. You want to also minimize your intonation, don't raise your pitch, which feels like normal valley girl speech, your pitch should typically decrease. Regarding pacing, don't speak too quickly. I naturally speak quickly so I have to pause after a clause to achieve that cinematic effect. If you have an ordinary voice like mine, you'll have to do a whisperish tone replace timbre. But in the process don't lose clarity. The best way is to focus on enunciating consonants at the ends of worlds/phrases and specifically the end of a sentence. "The eyes try to find" the 'd' should be very clear. The 't' in "flight" should be very clear. Speak directly to a condenser mic, not above. When it comes to movies with atmosphere and mood, usually you associate horror, suspense or thriller films. I think films with lower lighting create a more moody vibe. Modern films, even horror, are more bright, but when I watch these films, I find that their accurate lighting doesn't really create much atmosphere. I think Denis Villeneuve does this quite well actually so I want to emulate that (Prisoners, Bladerunner, Dune [toward the end]). Lowering highlights is a new trick I want to use rather than relying on increasing contrast by lowering midtones. I think this is useful when your footage isn't to dark to begin with. Regarding color, I think colder definitely feels a bit more tense and suitable for horror. So i tried lowering white balance and adding less color than usual. I've been preferring a less saturated look recently, I'll test it a bit more. Music is probably the most important aspect, finding the right ambience is tricky, but I searched for something that was a bit more quiet and humming. In post, I think a tripod is actually the best for horror. The reason i usually handheld is because it feels more immersive. On the other hand, tripod footage looks cinematic, but has an unsettling clinical feel sometimes. This would have been really effective for this project to give a more supernatural sense, but i didn't bring my tripod. Still or sliding footage can feel a bit eerie and unnatural so I tried to use stabilization to fix that. The drone shots which are perfectly smooth do still give off an uneasy vibe I hope. I used these scenes to illustrate a transition, a shift. Something has occurred. I think this works better if you can do this with a zoom shoot on a macro object, but I don't have a zoom lens. I think this shot, effectively a sliding shot, emulate it decently. Finally I added flickering frames. I think this is great for illustrating a memory, a feeling, a mood. If it's quick enough like in this project, i think it even gives a sense of regret, fear, or dread. I would typically prefer slow motion shots for visions, dreams, and positive memories, but flickering images i find more suitable for building tension. SQUID GAME
Music: park minju - Murder Without Violence 23 - Pink Soldiers Dear Ghosts, This was just for fun. Squid Game is a Netflix series and we don't own any of the material. I was a bit disappointed about Kang Sae-byeok so I hope this can do it justice. We filmed everything in 1-2 hours just the two of us based on intuition so you'll probably see a few inconsistencies if you watch carefully. This project is our first attempt at creating a more narrative based piece so we had to make do with what we had. I hope you still enjoy it despite the shortcomings. More fun things to come so please subscribe for more content. This setup is extremely minimal. Tripod, camera, lens, props. No cage, no monitor, the XT3 is I think the ultimate value for money for cinematic video. For a more filmic look, you want a thicker and more textured image. This is often why people prefer the image of the cinema cameras over mirrorless cameras. On my new M1 Mac, I tried adding more contrast than usual, and I think it really works! I love this new computer, I can finally playback 4k timelines smoothly. I promised you all a color grading tutorial, but I'm still a bit hesitant because I don't have that many followers. Being red-green color blind also makes me feel like I don't have the expertise to give the best advice, but I think I'll try anyway. Ouch! YouTube compression hurts for this one. The shadows don't have a lot of detail and the hair seems too dark. I don't recommend videos with dark shadows if your final product is YouTube. I wanted a more stylish and contrasty color grade for this one to mimic the original. For a darker look, recently I've been lowering my highlights as opposed to crushing my midtones. I find this technique more suitable for darker themed stories. Color grading can be kinda complicated. I think there are a lot of variables and you can't use the same method for every image. The lighting and exposure will be different for every shot so that's why I prefer to do everything manually. It's also note worthy that I didn't use an external mic for the audio. I had to scrap the audio for some scenes because of wind, but as you can see, the audio was decent! For background ambience, the internal microphones are fine, that is, if your lens autofocus isn't too loud. YOURS AND MINE - Short Film - Fuji XT3
CC available* Dear Ghosts, The best lens for cinematic video for Fujifilm is the 23mm f2 and here's why. In my last video, i stated that the 16mm f1.4 was the best overall lens. That lens if very sharp and probably more suitable for interviews and commercials where you probably want a more modern look. But I make a clear distinction that the 23mm f2 is the best lens for video if you want a cinematic look. If you don't know already, sharpness is really not particularly cinematic nor always suitable for making films. This lens is soft in a good way. It has a pastel feeling that has a bit more texture and fullness, I'd describe this as a modern lens with a vintage feel. The sensor of the Fujifilm XT3 is clearly meant for photography, so it will feel a bit more digital. This lens will counteract that digital feel. So why is this lens more suitable for video compared to the 16mm f1.4? The 16mm f1.4 is such a good lens and even better than the 23mm f2 in a closed system. But when you take camera bodies and other camera ecosystems into consideration, the 23mm f2 is better. The XT3 sensor is not optimized for video. The 16mm f1.4 is a sharp modern lens comparable to the image quality of a sigma 18-35mm. But because the XT3 sensor will never compare to the sensor or image of a Red or Blackmagic camera, you will always fall short if you try to use a modern lens. Use the same lens on a bmpcc4k and XT3, the image from the XT3 will look worse. By using the 16mm f1.4 modern lens, you will naturally be compared to modern footage from other cinema cameras. But by using the 23mm f2, you have a more vintage look. This lens will distinguish your footage from other cinema cameras. Sure there are vintage lenses for cinema cameras too, but they all have their own different feel. This lens is very small. It makes it such a joy to carry around, You can even fit this camera with the lens in some pockets if you wanted to. The autofocus from Fujifilm will progressively get beter with firmware updates. This lens seems to be contrast based, so sometimes your focus will shift if it is too dark or a subject eyes are not visibile. But even when that happens, you will often get a beautful focusing touch that looks like the work of manual focus. Watch this video and you'll see what I mean. The autofocus on this lens is quite good, though sometimes a bit too quick for video. If you shoot like me, walking and causing the camera to shake, those small shakes will picked up and fought against like fighting against waves. So although you make not see it, if you pause or play in slow motion, there are some blurry scenes if your tracking is too quick. To give you a comparison, the autofocus on the 16mm f1.4 is much slower, so when the camera shakes, the autofocus system just ignores it, or is to slow to fight against the waves, giving a less jumpy look. So for the 23mm, I'd suggest lowering the tracking and speed more than I did for this video. How much Bokeh do you really need? (Casa Corona) | Fujifilm + 23mm f2
Music: Can't Take My Eyes Off You Andy Williams Dear Ghosts, I normally shoot at f2.8 to 5.6 when shooting video to get a clearer background and more contrast and sharpness. I firmly believe f2.8 is the optimal aperture when filming. You get the best depth of field while maintaining contrast and sharpness. Most films you watch are shot at higher apertures to get the background in focus for more context and I think we're accustomed to this look as feeling more cinematic. I don't shoot wide open at f2 except for the following cases. Shooting wide open is okay for portrait shots and scenes where you want a softer nostalgic image. The other situation can be shown in this video. Not only is a lower f stop useful for getting more light at night, but the bokeh is really suitable when you have Christmas or cityscape lights in the background. This is the ideal scenario for making the best use of bokeh. It's been a while since the world has had a normal summer. We attended a Corona beer event and were able to get some fun footage. The Corona virus did the beer dirty, i guess that's why you often see a lot of "Coronitas" these days :P If you want to see more content, check out our instagram. Please drink responsibly. When shooting at night your footage is really hard to grade. In general, when there is less light and contrast, you will need to pump more color and saturation, which makes color grading dark scenes difficult. It is hard to determine white balance as well in the dark, so be aware of that. I typically add a lot of saturation for night scenes, about 35 color boost, which is going to make your skin tones too warm and alien. To offset this go to your color wheel and push the slider on the offset primary color wheel just a little bit away from your yellows and greens toward blue. This will reduce the amber tint from your color grading. Be aware that if you add grain using the overlay method, your final footage will look more exposed that usual. I didnt realize it until it was too late, so this video is not as clean as my typical work. I think the results confirm my original guess, for vintage style videos, grainy, nostalgic setting, I think 24 fps makes more sense than 25 fps. 25 fps is really smooth and is my frame rate of choice, but for this video I can't help but feel like it was a bit too smooth and modern. I like the vintage softness from the 23mm f2, but i had to shoot everything at f2 this night, which makes it even more softer than usual. I'll just to mix it up, i prefer the focal length of the 16mm but the 23mm has more pleasing image especially for portraits. It was also definitely more suitable for the vibe of the video, which i already knew would be vintage since we had planned on going to this Corona beer event. Can Fujifilm Make a Cinematic Music Video? (On Rocky Shores) | 16mm f1.4, 23mm
Please watch in 4k and headphones :) Dear Ghosts, "It's too digital! It's too sharp!" Its becoming so trendy to degrade footage nowadays to the point where I don't understand why people are even opting for more than 4k. Sure, the image from Fujifilm might be more digital than the bmpcc4k/6k. It's missing that x factor, the creamy lush thickness that feels more substantial, but i challenge you to watch this video and tell me if it really mattered. And being sharp has benefits too. Softness might equate to film, but sharpness really makes beauty portrait shots pop. It's become trite to mention the importance of lighting, anything is good enough if you have what it takes! It was difficult to find a suitable track for this video, I originally used something much more somber and cinematic but ultimately I chose a modern song and i think the shift in tone allowed me to do some edits that I've never done before. Regarding portrait shots, the 16mm has a wide and cinematic feel. But the lens has a bit of distortion and the face looks a little unnatural at some angles. I've actually never liked the 16mm for portraits but if you can get the right angle the distortion is forgivable. It also gives a wider scope, getting you ever so closer to the image from a larger sensor like those of the premium Alexas. On the other hand, the 23mm has barely any distortion and I find it makes the subject the subject most aesthetically pleasing. Can you guess which shots were with the 23mm? Something people don't mention alot is YouTube comrpession. The original footage is much sharper than YouTube would have you think even at 4k. For this video, it makes the image softer and the image seems to be warmer and lighter/less saturated (h265 looks more like h264). So if you wantyour content to be mainly presented on YouTube, I'd recommend adding more saturation to the color and darker shadows/midtones to achieve your desired contrast. In general, 4k looks like 1440p when uploaded to YT. Shadows have more noise and weird stuff going on as well. I don't like to use grain in lower light, which already has some noise typically. At blue hour, I prefer to have clean shots, also a modern feel was more appropriate for this one. I think mavic 2 pro clips are a bit difficult to match those of the fujifilm xt3 especially from similar shots since one is so much more detailed than the other. But the 16mm is definitely one of the better matches. Honestly the most fun I had with this project was with the titles. I love the color, the fonts, format and they always affect the mood. I think titles and text are definitely something you should think about for your own video projects. You can change the timing, placement, the possibilities are endless. End of Summer | Fujifilm 16mm f1,4, 23mm
Music: Another One Mac DeMarco Dear Ghosts, It's been a while since we could travel but we got some diverse footage from our trip to Pingtan. It's a much warmer setting so the next videos should have a more fun tone. This is the first time i've had to use an ND filter on both my camera and drone. I have a very cheap one that really changes the image quality, but i actually didn't mind the effect. It has a bit of haze but not as prominent as the Tiffen black mists, which i really hate. The only reason i used an ND for the 23mm f2 is because that's the only one i bought. So the 16mm f1.4 doesn't have an ND. The picture is actually so much sharper on the 16mm that it almost feels, dare i say, Alexa-ish. This is partly because with a wider field of view, it gives the illusion that the senor is larger perhaps. But maybe that's only me since i've been using the 23mm for so long...you be the judge, the first half is the 23mm, sunset half 16mm. The 23mm f2 is actually very unique. It's softer in so that it almost has a vintage characteristic, at least at 2.8. Once you go above 4/5.6, it gets very sharp and a modern look again. GHOST IN THE MATRIX | Fujifilm 23mm f2
Please watch in 4k :) Dear Ghosts, What if Neo took the blue pill? I felt inspired by the architecture of the Guangzhou opera house to make this Matrix themed video. I hope you enjoy it. A rookie mistake in filming is that people apply their photography skills to shooting. Most people like myself take photos in aperture priority, which is not always suitable in filming. You should normally shoot in shutter speed priority, double your frame rate. Some people use aperture priority when filming and it looks digital because, well, it looks like photography. Watch nearly any movie and most are shot stopped down. This is because the setting and background are very important for films and can only be in focus with higher apertures. You spend your efforts on composition, and then you can't see anything in the background because the bokeh is too shallow. I typically like to shoot around f5.6, but have no problem shooting at f11 (though you can see stains on your glass or filter). As soon as i started shooting at higher apertures, my videos became much more cinematic. Aside, I recently watched Mortal Kombat and in the first 7 minutes, the background was blurred too much, and it just looked weird. Comment below if you think otherwise! There aren't many films where shooting wide open really added to the story (maybe Moonlight and dreamy sequences). A Wes Anderson Style Vlog
Please watch in 4k :) Dear Ghosts, This one was a lot of fun. I actually didn't intend on specifically making this tribute while shooting until after I compiled all the clips in editing. The setting is a Los Angeles inspired art gallery where you can take selfies. This happened to be the biggest and most fun gallery I've been to. Chili wanted to buy a vintage tie to bind up her hair at a outside stand, to which I reluctantly agreed to. To my surprise, we qualified for a raffle, which I'm always good at. But I didn't leave it to chance, the raffle box had balls with notes inside of them to contain your note like a Powerball lottery. The first ball I rolled said, "Try again." Under the assumption that the shopkeeper didn't want to give away good rewards, I shook the box to try to shake the balls from the back to the front. Two balls dropped, one with a white note (like the first ball) and another with a red note. I obviously took the red note and as expected, we won a free shirt! We ended up choosing a vintage yellow shirt that you see in the video, which really suits that perfect Kodak vintage vibe. There are two things I want to highlight in this video. The first is that this is the first time I added grain, which to my surprise really benefited the vintage film style. I always thought it was similar to noise, but it's not. I'll definitely try to use it more for film style projects. The second thing is that clothing is an extremely important aspect when filming. I often plan shooting around three things: Lighting, location, and clothing. The color and style really adds to the ambience as you'll see in upcoming videos. Even in the last video, Chili is wearing the same dress underneath but there's a completely different vibe. Eterna or Nah? Is Eterna all you need? FLOG vs Eterna | Fujifilm XT3
Please watch in 4k :) Reason for this video: A lot of comments lead me to think that most people use Eterna over flog for Fujifilm video. I thought my audience would find this comparison useful. I originally had a longer video but other footage was even more shaky so I scrapped it and used these clips. Everything is old footage from last year so my technique and settings aren't as clean but I hope you can find something helpful in this video even though it's not scientific by any means. Analysis: As you can see Eterna is really clean, low saturation and contrast giving a soft look while Flog has more dynamic range and color flexibility. In low light I find Eterna and Provia to have an edge in clarity and noise, maybe it's the lower ISO, but in almost all other situations i prefer Flog even if it takes me twice as long to grade it. It's up to your own standards if Eterna is good enough (which it is), but I personally try to push my shots as optimally as I can so I'll be mostly using Flog. Final note: My method of color grading with Davinci Resolve is really simple and effective as I'm red-green colorblind, so I cannot recommend Davinci enough. It makes the whole process enjoyable, straight-forward and fun. It seems like everyone on YouTube requests a lot of tutorials and reviews but I'm personally more interested in making cinematic content than reviewing. But if enough people prefer color grading guides and shooting/setting tutorials then leave a comment and I'll consider it if it gets enough traction!
