Backlighting with a spotlight - This setup is used to silhouette the subject without having a large light source, creating a very ominous and dramatic scene. 2. Overhead lighting with softbox - A popular setup in film that’s widely known for integration scenes. This setup hides the emotion of the subject creating a dark feel. 3. Split Lighting with a spotlight - Split lighting in this form is very artistic. The subject is viewed by just half of the face. 4. Split Lighting with Softbox - This form of lighting is close to Rembrandt lighting. A shadow is casted forming character in the scene. Shaping light is a crucial part of making a scene cinematic, without great lighting an expensive camera can seem pointless. This isn’t going to replace your traditional white balance card but this tip may save you in a pinch! When I white balance my camera I normally use an @xritevideo ColorChecker Passport but I’ve been in circumstances where I just simply forgot it and need a way to adjust my white balance. I rather use my Sony lens cap than have an image that’s too warm or too cool. When I first started creating videos I used to crank my shutter speed and aperture up, so my image wouldn’t be overexposed. Once I started using ND filters the difference was night and day. I love to shoot “Wide-Open” to get a shallow depth of field in my images. In this video I paired my sony fx3 with a sony 24mm 1.4. I decided to shoot at an aperture of 1.4 to make the background completely disappear, and focus the audience on me. Here are my top 3 tips for producing great images out of your camera! 1. Exposure - Proper exposure is the key to dialing in a clean and quality image out of your camera. A common mistake is over or under exposing an image, to a point where it can’t be fixed in post production. 2. Lens choice - Choose your focal length wisely. Another common mistake is using the same focal length for every shot, when you may need to switch to a different one. 3. Post Production - if you camera has it. Utilize Log/flat shooting modes. When you do to this you have the flexibility to adjust your look to fit the scene that you’re shooting.
