The GENIUS Color of "Cold Harbor" (Severance Color Theory Analysis)
*SPOILER WARNING FOR SEASON FINALE* After the INCREDIBLE Severance Season 2 finale I had to do a color theory and color grading review. In this video we discussed the color theory and patterns of Severance. Much of this builds on my previous analysis so make sure to check that out here https://youtu.be/q3RE1RMGTpc As a recap, we talked about what Red, Green, Blue, and Purple represent in Severance. Along with theory crafting around red vs blue, costume patterns, and what purple may mean for the future. In this video we build on that and see how those theories played out in the Season 2 finale along with taking a deeper look at the film emulation texture (halation) and what that may mean for the future of the story. *FREE Download "A Guide to the Psychology of Color in Film"* https://revolutioncontent.ck.page/8e62802258 0:00 Intro 0:25 Birthing Retreat 2:27 MDR Cinematography 3:33 Mark arrives at work 5:08 A "new" blue-green 6:00 Red Color Theory 7:02 The Halation Mystery 8:33 Mark's transformation 11:11 Final Scene Barrett Kaufman - Film Colorist Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/barrett_kaufman For business inquires reach out here https://revolutioncontent.com/#contact #severance #colorgrading #cinematography

Why Wicked Looks Like THAT
There's been a lot of online conflict over the "desaturated" look of Wicked. So what's up? Why are people having such strong and differing reactions? I think it's less about the look of this specific film and more about the cultural context that Wicked sits within. The 1939 Wizard of Oz is a hugely influential film and many people were expecting a color grade/look that was similar. However an interview with director Jon Chu brings some clarity. Check out the full length analysis for more info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjUge4oK86s
Why Wicked Looks Like THAT
The "desaturated" color grading and cinematography of Wicked: Part One (2024) has been a source of controversy since its release. Common critiques of the look at the film focus on an overly desaturated experience inside a story that many expect to be bright and vibrant. This video focuses on how we can judge a films color and understand why the film ended up looking like it did. What did you think of the film? Both as a whole and then the color more specifically? the SECRET to easy color correction? Build better looks (DaVinci Resolve Color Grading)
This is one of the BIGGEST problems I see with filmmakers when they approach color (and many educators for that matter...). Anyone can make a single shot look good in Davinci Resolve. It's a powerful tool. But when we focus too hard on just individual shots and don't zoom out to think about the film as a whole, we do a massive disservice to the cinematography. I hope this video can help encourage all of us to think more holistically about color grading, and help us think more "horizontally" about our adjustments. This also helps get a better understanding of when we need to break out of our classic Resolve Color Management and experiment with other DRTs (Display Rendering Transforms) like JP2499 and OpenDRT by Jed Smith. Quick shot matching for $15 (Davinci Resolve)
This is one of those Davinci Resolve tips and tricks that I use all the time! Let's be real, shot matching is not always the most fun part of being a colorist. So being able to speed up this workflow is huge! While I do love my @blackmagicnewsofficial color panel, sometimes what you really want is to very precisely take a specific color out of an image. And that's what printer lights do so well! And if you're listening Blackmagic, I would really love is to be able to map similar shortcuts for linear gain 😮 That would be awesome #filmcolorist #davinciresolve #colorist #colourist #film
Start customizing LUTs #colorgrading #davinciresolve
I am a huge believer in customizing looks to fit the story. Even if you use someone else's LUT as the base for your look, find ways to level it up and tailor it for your story. Not only does it help give you authorship over the look, but it helps develop your sense of taste and style. #colorist
Easy Shot Matching in Davinci Resolve with the Numpad (Keyboard Shortcut Tips and Tricks)
There are SO many Davinci Resolve users that don't know about this super simple trick for making shot-matching a quicker process. Getting a wireless numpad or even utilizing a full sized keyboard can significantly speed up the process of shot matching and give you more predictable results. I walk through the necessary settings as well as the customizations I use within Davinci Resolve. Printer lights and Offset is one of the simplest and most effective tools for getting better results in your project. While I love the Davinci Resolve Mini and Micro panels, this little $15 addition is an excellent accessory in the toolkit. this is a super common question (Davinci Resolve)
Project level vs node based color management is a hotly debated topic. And BOTH can work beautifully on your project. But node based color management has the potential to open options for artistic expression in the future. There is a common philosophy on color management that it should be purely technical without imparting any artistic expression. And while I agree with this mentality in theory, it just doesn't work in reality. Every technical transformation from scene space to display space has some artistic choices built into them. So that must be a consideration when we are choosing our color management. Especially in Davinci Resolve.
How to make a Creative LUT
I get a LOT of question about building Creative LUTs. There are so many trash options out there that don't follow basic best practices. Here are two essential principles to look at if you are deciding on using creative LUTs in your workflow. And this applies to LUTs in any software, even outside of Davinci Resolve. Also, make sure to check out my resource page for the free downloads mentioned in the video Free Resource Page https://resources.revolutioncontent.com/resourcepage 0:00 Intro 1. 0:28 (Building high quality creative LUTs) ...could you possibly create a tutorial on how to properly make a creative LUT? 2. 3:30 (Why node based color management is helpful) I've seen a lot of colourists use CSTs in the node view to control when the transformation into the output colour space happens, but DaVinci seem to encourage the use of colour management to convert to the output colour space before the node tree. Do you use CSTs in nodes out of habit or is there some tangible benefit to this? 3. 7:25 (Gear talk on Wacom Intuos Pro) What is your pen-mouse thing setup? Is it an ipad? 4. 8:44 (Using the RGB Mixer with LUTs) I was wondering if a creative LUT such as a film emulation would do more or less the same, pushing certain hues and saturation levels to a more cohesive look. Or would there be cases in which you would use this rgb-mixer method in conjunction with a creative LUT? 5. 10:51 (Scene-wide saturation changes) You mentioned changing the grade "over the course of a scene". Is this process done manually/numerically, using some sort of key framing, or other? Vintage style lens blur in 60 seconds (Davinci Resolve)
Davinci Resolve has yet to implement a solid progressive edge blur, but there is a sneaky solution that works quite well! You can find this type of blurring commonly on vintage lenses as well as anamorphics. This is also sometimes referred to as Petzval field curvature which is commonly seen as a problematic element in lenses, but occasionally we can use them for building the textural stack in color grading. This technique is specific to Davinci Resolve, but I hope to see this feature implemented in more clean and intuitive ways in the near future.
Why does anyone care about edge blurring? This is the answer.

FINALLY an Anamorphic Style Edge Blur that WORKS in Davinci Resolve
Davinci Resolve has yet to implement solid progressive edge blur and lens blur to add character to the ends of frames but there is a sneaky solution that I want to share with you. You can find this type of blurring commonly on vintage lenses as well as anamorphics. This is also sometimes referred to as Petzval field curvature which is commonly seen as a problematic element in lenses, but occasionally we can use them for building an aesthetic with purposeful storytelling in filmmaking and color grading. The great thing about using this method is the ability to customize things like the bokeh shape. This technique is specific to Davinci Resolve 19 (and previous versions where the Tilt-Shift-Blur is fully featured). But I hope to see this feature implemented in more clean and intuitive ways. ⬇️My Free Resource Page!
