Is the moment passing you by? Slow. Down. When things aren’t going well, it’s easy to look forward to some arbitrary outcome, event, or emotion sometime in the future. Conversely, it’s also easy to crave the past and how things once were. I needed to learn — and I continue to work on — how to stay rooted in the now. Slow down, be still, and be present. I truly made this video as a reminder to myself. Personally, this past year has had some incredible highs and also some unimaginable lows. I had the privilege of spending two months in Europe, but I also had many days stressed about the future and questioning whether I was making the right decisions. We’re obsessed with setting goals, achieving them, and then simply moving on to the next “thing”. Having goals is commendable, but at times it feels like we’re on this constant, perpetual chase for more without appreciating how far we’ve actually come. When I’m traveling, everything is this new, exciting experience so it’s easy to be present in the moment. But I needed the reminder that I can do that with the daily routine, the mundane, the not-so-wonderful parts of life. It’s about falling in love with experiencing all there is to life. My first time in Costa Rica was largely spent in Limón, one of the country’s seven provinces located on the country's Caribbean coast. Limón is a paradisiacal, natural region characterized by rainforests, mountains, and a wide variety of flora and fauna. Fun fact: Costa Rica is actually home to more than 95,000 registered species, which is more than 6% of the known species or biodiversity in the world. I was on a press trip organized by the Costa Rica tourism board, so we experienced a broad range of activities and accommodations across our one-week trip through Limón. We learned to make cocoa with the Indigenous BriBri community, rode a gyroplane, and watched wildlife just after sunrise — among other things. Near the end of our travels, I asked Briona — the writer on the trip with me — if she wanted to collaborate on creating a video together. She wrote and recorded the voiceover, and I combined it with the footage I had shot to create the short travel video you see here. If you’ve read this far, thank you! It goes without saying that it hasn't been a normal year. Chances are it's safe to say this wasn't the best year of your life. But don't be so quick to label 2020 the worst year ever either. In November, I began writing the narrative for this video. I spent the last few days editing and writing the rest, then set it to moments I captured throughout the year. I started assisting on wedding shoots a few years ago. 50+ weddings later, people sometimes ask, “Does it ruin weddings for you when you attend?” And the short answer is yes and no. Iceland had been at the top of my travel bucket list for a few years. We weren't sure what the weather in Iceland in March would be like, but we booked a winter road trip anyway. We spent ten days driving around the entire country. We slept in a camper van, ate dehydrated meals out of bags, and fuelled ourselves with instant coffee. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat — the picturesque landscapes just leave you completely in awe. Iceland is just an insane place that feels like pure magic. If you're thinking of visiting Iceland, I cannot recommend it enough. For nature lovers and adventure seekers, it's the ultimate destination. We completely lucked out on the weather. We only had to drive through one snowstorm in the northern part of the country -- probably the scariest driving I've ever done -- and it only rained the day we departed, in Reykjavík (the capital). Some of my favourite spots, in no particular order: Gljúfrabúi waterfall, Vestrahorn/Stokksnes, Londrangar, Myvatn Nature Baths, and the small town of Akureyri.
