The First Probe Zoom lens – Test & Review of DZOFILM X-Tract 18 – 28 T8 Probe Zooms
DZOFILM just released their new Probe zoom lenses called X-Tract. The X-Tract are Full Frame probe zoom lenses for professional applications with T8 aperture and a 2.1 magnification. For now there is a straight version and a 90° version, there will be 360° version coming in the near future. We tested their optical performance, breathing, vignetting, distortions, stability and of course, if they are parfocal. Besides or review of the X-Tract this episode will show you how you can create these very cool fire and explosion effects yourself and even dial in the right brightness by changing the mixture of the ingredients. While we are at it, we shot an awesome new logo animation for this channel at we show you exactly how we did that to get your creative juices flowing If you want to buy the X-Tract, and you would like to support this channel, please use our B&H affiliate links. It doesn't cost you a cent more, but we get a little something for the tip jar. This is the straight version: https://bhpho.to/43VJY1E This is the 90° version: https://bhpho.to/3Xz1qFj Thank you so much! WARNING (information came in after video was produced): The X-Tract series requires factory calibration when the snorkel is changed. Tolerance stacking and self-assembly may affect infinity focus. Tests confirm that in special cases, even shim adjustments cannot resolve the issue. All detachable configurations now require mandatory laser calibration before shipment. This means that the snorkel is not interchangeable like suggested in this video, at least not without a possible need for factory calibration. There will be an interchangeable set in the future. Disclaimer: DZOFILM sponsored this episode so we could do something exciting for you to show the capabilities of the X-Tract probe lenses. As always, we are not obligated to glorify the lenses, we will always give you and DZOFILM an honest feedback about our experience producing this content. We hope to give you enough impressions so you can make up your own mind about the quality and usefulness of a product in your own context. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Please join the ranks of the Media Division: https://www.youtube.com/mediadivision/join Talk to us an our community: Closed Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mediadivision2 Business and collaboration inquiries info@media-division.de ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– MUSIC Music licences by Artlist To get the music from this episode, subscribe to Artlist. A Brief History Of Cine Cams – The journey from analog to digital and todays cinema cameras
Our journey with many examples and technological backgrounds takes us from analog stocks and broadcast cameras to the digital pioneers with the Sony CineAlta cameras and the Thomson Viper that used 3 CCD technology, to the first single CCD Camera, the Dalsa Origin, to the Panavision Genesis that was developed into the Sony F35, to Arries D-20 and the RED One cine cameras. We continue with the the dominance of digital and CMOS through the Arri Alexa and the evolution of RED cameras, Sonys comeback attempt with the F65, and the trend to large format with the Sony Venice and the Alexa LF to todays market and the rise of the prosumer cameras. Enjoy! This short breakdown is an extract from our episode CREATE CINEMATIC FILMS to make our content more available to a larger audience. 2x Anamorphic Zooms are finally here! Test & Review of the revolutionary Laowa Proteus Zooms
Classic 2x Anamorphic in a zoom lens? That has been totally absent in the affordable anamorphic market… until now! Laowa just announced not just one, but two anamorphic zoom lenses in their higher end Proteus lineup. The Laowa 2x Proteus zooms come as a wide angle 26-45mm and as a longer 45-85mm They are weighting just 1.5 kg each and are designed for super35 coverage. This episode was produced in summer 2024 using earlier prototypes of the lenses. Our results and feedback was used to improved coatings and the mechanical design of the lenses. The finalised versions have some changes to their housings design, and they are either in metric or imperial scale instead of the dual scale. We are testing the Proteus zooms in a studio setup to show you the characteristics like flairs, bokeh and overall sharpness. After that we take them on a wild shoot on racing boats… a really extreme situation for filmmaking where we usually wouldn’t dream of shooting anamorphic, or swapping prime lenses in general. Disclaimer: We have had these prototypes of the Proteus zooms for a couple of month to test for you… free of charge. For the sake of transparency this video is therefor marked as a paid promotion. As always we are not obliged to glorify these lenses or Laowa – we will let you make up your own mind based on what we were able to shoot with them. Create CINEMATIC Films – A Deep Dive into how you can create Movie Magic yourself
How can YOU create cinematic films?! We distilled a decade of experience into 2 hours of super condensed information. What is important and what is not, where should you invest your time and money, and we deal with misconception. We explain the basics, evaluate cameras & lenses, talk about acting, directing, art direction, choosing locations, costumes, props, lighting, composition, staging, and post with examples and advice. Did we arrive at a point where the camera is neglectable? We are going deeper into technical qualities like resolution, dynamic range, and of course we go into the relevance of lenses… anamorphic, vintage, spherical… cheap and legendary… we are going to pitch kit lenses against vintage and cine lenses. Can you tell the difference or is the lens choice largely irrelevant to an cinematic image. We also included a tutorial on how to emulate film looks and how we created our Silence of the Lambs spoof "Breaking The Silence" Our Lynch & Kubrick members Members can download their ActionPacks in the Members–Section of our YouTube Home Page https://www.youtube.com/@MediaDivision/membership –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Please join the ranks of the Media Division: https://www.youtube.com/mediadivision/join Talk to us an our community: Closed Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mediadivision2 Business and collaboration inquiries info@media-division.de Disclaimer: We collaborated with DEHANCER to bring you this episode. Cine lenses that fit in your hand – The fast Full Frame Thypoch Simera-C T1.5 lenses Test & Review
Tiny but fast Cine lenses - the Typoch Simera-C fit in the palm of your hand while still delivering an impressive speed of T1.5 for all focal lengths. That makes many things a lot easier. Handheld and gimbal shooting, on Steadicams and Gyros, to use in narrow spaces, and on helmet and body mounts. The compact build and low weight also helps with traveling and low profile work. We are going to test the Simera-C, and try some interesting rigging for our short “Roadkill” that is shot exclusively at T1.5. Filmmaking Masterclass: Recreating THE KILLER with Anamorphic DZO PAVO Lenses – Epic Episode #20
With “The Killer” David Fincher created a masterpiece of cinematic storytelling. In the first act – the Paris hit – Fincher and his team combined three sets in post. They also added typical artefacts like horizontal flares and distortions to give “The Killer” an anamorphic vibe. To learn and explore, we set out to recreate the climax of the first act of the Killer, BUT to do it for real: One real location and real anamorphic lenses. We even developed a way to do film through a real rifle scope – anamorphic of course. This was possible as DZO just introduced three new focal lengths to their awesome PAVO lineup of 2x anamorphic lenses, a 135mm, a 180mm, and a 65mm Macro. The lenses to rule anamorphic filmmaking? Test and comparison of the DZOfilm PAVO lenses
We are diving once more deep into the realm of anamorphic shooting, with DZO new 2x anamorphic lenses… the PAVO. Full blown anamorphic cine lenses that try to win the hearts of the community by offering a classic anamorphic look while still being light and small enough to fit smaller production needs… without sacrificing image quality?! All that at a competitive price?! Let’s see if DZOfilm built the one lens to rule them all … we put the PAVO anamorphic lenses to the test. We brought a PAVO set in the studio, and made a shootout against an Atlas Orion. Our test footage has been shot on Alexa, a MAVO, and a Lumix S5IIx. We also included some experiments with anamorphic auto focus using a DJI LiDAR system. After all that we bring the PAVO on location to tell you, how they work in a tough production environment. A new Probe - Exploring and testing the LAOWA Pro2be lenses with cinematic experiments
Laowa puts the "Pro" in Probe, with a set of three 24mm Probe lenses. T8 speed, a longer reach, a shorter working distance, and an overall improved image quality, make the Pro2be a desirable tool for macro photography, SFX, and tabletop work. A team from The Marmalade and the Media Division will conduct a test with a series of cinematic experiments that expose the possibilities and the quality of these lenses – as well as giving you some interesting background information and education in filmmaking – just to stir your creative juices and to make this as fun as as possible. We are going to create a mini to macro shot, explore a technique called “dry for wet” for a mysterious underwater shot, and wild fluid dynamics in a tank. What do the Laowa Pro2be lenses bring to the table and how much does it mitigate the original Probes achilles heel… that is, the hunger for light. Gyro Stabilizer Stress test #Short
We put a LUMIX S5IIx on a Gyro Stabilizer to see what this combo can do in extreme situations… there are obvious limits and the system "kicks" when the turn rate is to high. Still, it produces a unique look that is distinctively different from a gimbal and is a great tool in situations that don't allow for gimbals… like in this one, where a gimbal would immediately be entangled in the thicket.
Auto Focus Battle. Phase detection AF vs LiDAR AF. LUMIX S5IIx vx ALEXA XT-M. FIGHT! #Short
Quick test what new auto focus solution can do… and what not. PDAF auto focus of the upcoming Panasonic Lumix S5IIx versus the mighty Arri Alexa fitted with a DJI LiDAR focus module (RS 3 Pro is folded and attached to the side of the Alexa M head). Purposefully trying to irritate the systems by walking out of the frame, covering the face, turning away and so on. Both systems have their strengths and weaknesses. Regarding the difference in image quality: Alexa records in uncompressed RAW, while the S5IIx in 4.2.0 h265. Also, the kit zoom is expected to be softer compared to a good prime... vintage or not. I would say that both AF systems have strengths and weaknesses intrinsic to the technology used. LiDAR has more problems with the quick hand movements. #DJILiDAR #LumixS5IIx #shorts

InstantCineWisdom – Gyro Stabilisers #Short
Gyro Stabilisers are a lesser common way to stabilise Camera movement. German DoP Jost Vacano perfected the technique in 1981s DAS BOOT, and the tracking shots through the submarine are nothing short of breathtaking, earning him an Academy Award nomination. Gyro Stabilisers maintain a handheld look that adds a sense urgency and a more involvement feel for the audience. A gyro Stabiliser rotates weights with extremely high RPM adding inertia to a system …and produce a siren song to deal with. Just like Gimbal systems, Gyroscopes stabilise the orientation of a system, not their position… this is why we combine it with a Tilta Float adding stabilisation to the position and supporting the weight. We are working on an episode about the subject… let us know if you have questions. #short
InstantCineWisdom – 70mm Film #Short
70mm film doubles the width of the filmstrip compared to 35mm. The negative is actually a 65mm filmstrip, but the projection Strip is 70mm to house 6 tracks of stereoscopic sound 70mm first became a standard in 1928 under the brand name “Fox Grandeur”. The format was considered too expensive in times of the great depression. In 1952 Todd-AO was introduced to simplify the three-Strip Cinerama process. Panavision developed their own 70mm formats with MGMs Camera 65 The anamorphic process was coined Ultra Panavision 70 and brought us movies like Ben Hur and The Hateful Eight The spherical process was coined Super Panavision 70 and brought us movies like Lawrence of Arabia and 2001: A Space Odyssey IMAX uses the same 70mm film, but moving the film horizontally producing roughly 3 times the surface at a higher aspect ratio. #Short Please join the ranks of the Media Division: https://www.youtube.com/mediadivision/join
InstantCineWisdom – 35mm Film #Short
The name 35mm refers to the width of the filmstrip including perforations. 35mm film is used since the dawn of cinema. A negative is exposed in camera and a positive is used to project the image on a screen. This is called a cinematographic process. The acquisition and projection formats can vary in different processes. Leitz transferred the format in 1918 to photography where the filmstrip is transported horizontally, doubling the frame size. This variant has been used later in cinema too, primarily as an acquisition format under the Brand name Vista Vision. Optical soundtracks reduced the surface for the image and therefore the image quality. Super35 was introduced as an acquisition only format to improve quality and versatility and uses the full width without soundtrack. Super35 is usually shot using 4 perforation hight, but only 3 perforations are used for classic windscreen cinema. Super 35 can be distributed with an added squeeze for anamorphic projection, or for spherical projection with large parts of the print remaining black. #Short Please join the ranks of the Media Division: https://www.youtube.com/mediadivision/join
InstantCineWisdom – The Dolly Zoom #Short
The dolly zoom is also called “Zolly” or “Vertigo Effect” after the initial use of the technique in Hitchcock “Vertigo” The dolly zoom can be found in many movies every since, often used to display a moment of an overwhelming realisation, an altered state of mind, or, an overwhelming sensory experience. The trick is simple… the camera is moving in or out while the Zoom simultaneously zooming out or in. The perspective is changing because the camera is moving. Now the zoom is used to compensate for that change in the field of view. The camera movement can be done on track, on a cart, a slider… the longer the zoom and the dolly is, the more pronounced the effect becomes. The quicker the movement, the more obvious the effect is. More about this in our ZOOM episode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIMTwV3YaVk #Short Please join the ranks of the Media Division: https://www.youtube.com/mediadivision/join
InstantCineWisdom – Radioactive Vintage Lenses #Short
Some Vintage lenses are radioactive due to the use of Thorium dioxide before a ban in the mid 70s. Thorium 232 is a metal that has a high refraction index, and spiking lens elements allows for lighter and cheaper optical designs with low aberration and distortions. The Canon FD 55mm Aspherical shows more than 30.000 radioactive decays per minute on the front element. The Decay chain contains progeny isotopes that emit alpha, beta, and gamma radiation, so, a lens cap or even a metal door will not shield you from all radiation. Holding this lens directly at your head for an hour will expose you to radiation comparable to a dental X-ray. While that sounds dramatic, regular use is not a medical concern, But lenses shouldn’t be stored in proximity to humans. There is no known dangers to modern CMOS sensor. Still, it is recommendable not to store radioactive lenses mounted to a camera. Radioactive lenses can get a visible amber tint over time. This is a crystallographic defect called F-center. This can be cured by exposing the lens element to UV-light #Short Please join the ranks of the Media Division: https://www.youtube.com/mediadivision/join

Panasonic GH6 – The King of Micro Four Third – Overview, test, features, and review for filmmakers
The filmmakers guide to the Panasonic Lumix GH6 with all key features, test, and review One cam to do it all… One cam to rule them all… at least in its class. Five years in the making, the GH6 came to take the crown of the Micro Four Third format from his predecessor… the GH5. And as it was to be expected, the GH6 continues the legacy of being an "all in one" powerhouse for filmmakers. We will take a look from a professional filmmakers perspective. We will give you a tour around the camera, the specs, and what they mean. Test the image quality and some of the new features with our short film “Hypnagogia”. Take a deep dive in the key features. Compare the GH6 to the GH5 to find out if it is worth the upgrade . And let you know our first impression. It will be in stores beginning of March 2022, and it will cost 2.200 dollars… euros… is supposed to be the same. #GH6 #LUMIX #Panasonic 00:00 - Introduction to the GH6 01:56 - The Legacy 04:02 - Tour around the camera 07:03 - Test film “Hypnagogia” 10:22 - Membership & Action Pack 12:13 - Dynamic Range Boost 13:44 - Slow Motion / High Frame Rate 18:04 - Stabilization - IBIS & Dual IS 21:08 - ProRes & LUT support 24:30 - Auto Focus 28:21 - Battery Life 30:50 - GH6 vs GH5 32:27 - Resume

See the whole Hands On here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJRzXyqz5yI I only filmed in my small garage and at my desk and used little equipment. A spotlight, a pop up green screen, some displays, a slider, and a DIY rotating mechanism. Everyone can do it. The Space suite is Chinese high altitude gear used in MIG fighter planes – you can buy that from ebay. The hair dryer is attached to the air vent of the helmet and prevents fogging of the visor… better use one that allows to blow air without heating. Lens Test: Zeiss R-Biotar 100mm f/0.7 – Ultra Fast X-Ray Lens #MediaDivisionLensArchive
We are testing the massive Zeiss R-Biotar 100mm f/0.7 – an ultra fast industrial lens built by Zeiss Jena for X-Ray machines – this doesn not mena that the lens is radioactive in any way. Unlike many other X-Ray lenses, the R-Biotar covers Full Frame sensors. The ultra fast aperture on the large format allows for unseen narrow depth of field. The focal plane is also curved, introducing a tilt shift effect. This lens requires a 4mm flange at infinity and can only be used on specially modified cameras that allow for this very short flange. If you want to find out, what this lens was built for, how the camera is modified to fit the lens, or the general physics and history of ultra fast lenses as well as testing of "practical" ultra fast lenses, watch our epic episode "f0.7 – Ultrafast Lenses". f0.7 – Ultrafast Lenses – Legends, budget options, modding, and testing – Epic Episode #13
#sponsored In this crazy experiment we push the limits of lens speed by modding a camera to fit a massive Zeiss Biotar f0.73 lens. Along the way, we are going to take you to the dark side of the moon the realm of the legendary Zeiss Planar f0.7 lens and explain how it helped Staley Kubrick to shot Barry Lyndon in candlelight. We are going to go to the basics to explore the possibilities and to expose the limitations of ultrafast lenses. We look into the possibilities that you have to shoot ultrafast yourself, and what budget options there are. Here we test the Kipon Ibelux 40mm f0.85, the SLR Magic 25mm T0.95… and we boost a Vintage Canon FD f1.2 below f1. We compare shooting ultrafast lenses with shooting at high ISO and of course… using both in combination. Special thanks to Lyndon Gaul and the Marmalade for partnering with us. Motion Control – Filmmaking with optical illusions & layers of time – Epic Episode #12
We are going to show you how robotic motion control works, and how precise it can be. Together with the High End production house "The Marmalade" we built our own real life optical illusion using forced perspective and different layers of time. And, we are going to take you through the production from concept to post. Also, we show you how you can use motion control with relative affordable gear in your projects… for example to create surprisingly realistic miniatures with the help of programable sliders. Beyond IMAX: Filming with a gigantic 16K sensor with sample – Epic Episode #10
Crazy experiment time… We are building a sensor double the size of IMAX and film with 200 Megapixels… that is over 16K resolution with crazy CRAZY image quality. We are going to achieve this with the help of a old large format photo camera that will allow us to effectively use the huge image projection that a large format lens delivers and the Full Frame MAVO LF as a scanning device As always, we upload in 8k so you can see a little bit of that quality By going to the extreme, we can also reveal wether the trend to larger format and more resolution brings something good to the table, or are we on our best way to overshoot the sweet spot that a smaller format offers. We are going to compare the beyond IMAX frame with the exact same shot taken in Full Frame, super 35, and micro four third formats. And we are going to find out, if f there’s an inconvenient truth to be found? Give your camera an Alexa 65 sized sensor – Crazy experiment tutorial 12K footage – Epic Episode #4
Wonder how your Camera would look if it had one of this fancy large format sensors like the Alexa 65? Emulate the large format look of films like "The Revenant", "Rogue One", "The Hateful 8", and "2001" using some cheap gear and the camera you already own. We are going to do a little math and built a crazy rig that will allow us to reposition a smaller sensor behind a medium format lens in a fashion that will allow us to capture an Alexa65 equivalent sensor size. We will then compare the large sensor against the same framing with the original sensor size. For your viewing pleasure, the 12K large format composition was downscaled to 8K to fit YouTubes maximum 8K resolution. The rest of this episode was acquired in 5.7K ProRes RAW and upsized to match. One Year Panasonic EVA1 Review – Projects, Recommendations, Suggestions
We are looking back at a long first year with the Panasonic EVA1 and the reasons why one would choose EVA1. We will go to work with EVA and discuss her strong and weak sides as well as her special abilities with some real life projects We will see how versatile EVA can be rigged and used, give some fair criticism and make suggestions for improvements… … and of course, we will speculate and write a wishlist for a future EVA2. Everything looked great inside Premiere, but media encoder messed up the render. Just realised it after upload and as it is a 4 hour render/upload... I will live with it!

Camera sensor and film size explained – From 1/3 inch over super35 to IMAX – Epic Episode #1
A journey through all relevant sensor and film sizes compared by size – from 1/3 inch to IMAX – with samples. This is an older video and there a some mistakes in the 35mm variants. Anamorphic processes don't use a super 35 at full aperture but the academy sized negative. Goldfinger etc are shot with ordinary 35mm and not with the wider super 35 (that uses the space reserved for audio track). 1/3 inch - super 8 - 1/2.3 inch - 2/3 inch - 1 inch - super 16 - M43 - APS-C - Academy 35 – super 35 - FF 35mm - VistaVision - 65mm - IMAX #sensorsize #filmsize #super35 #35mm #vistavision #70mm #IMAX Please join the ranks of the Media Division: https://www.youtube.com/mediadivision/join Instagram/IGTV: mini tutorials, whats cooking, and updates: https://www.instagram.com/media.division Facebook Group: Community, discussion, help... ask everything https://www.facebook.com/groups/mediadivision2/ MUSIC To get the music from this episode, subscribe to Artlist. Test - GH5 Firmware 2.0
Quick test of the brand new GH5 firmware 2.0. We are looking into the 6K 4:3 Anamorphic mode, test the 400mbps All-Intra codec vs ProRes HQ, and try, if non "V" Cards can sustain write speeds to cover the 400mbps codec. Brainfart at 1:45 – of course I'm talking about vignetting not cropping. Blindness at 2.30 – obviously I am to stupid, as monitor desqueeze is available (can only find 2x on/off). Conducted many more test runs with the Lexar after this video was done. I had one write error after 34 minutes so far. Recording just ended but the file was not corrupted. Only use V60/V90 cards for critical applications.
