WWT Slimbridge is a really interesting reserve, it's located on the River Severn near Gloucester and hosts a wide variety of captive birds as well as bird hides for viewing wild birds. It's a fantastic location for the seasoned bird watcher but also allows beginners to learn by studying the captive birds. On my last visit to RSPB Otmoor I was blown away by the sheer quality of wildlife on hand. Barn Owls, Marsh Harrier and a potential Bittern could all be found in a relatively small area - on top of that - the Marsh Harrier themselves were so showy I just knew I had to come back. No more than two days later I return with my buddy Luke for a morning of bird photography. There are many RSPB nature reserves dotted around the country, areas of land which have been recognised as vital strongholds for wildlife each possessing it's own individual charm. Each reserve is subtly tweaked in order to make it even more welcoming for wildlife ensuring the growth of dwindling species. Today I venture to Oxfordshire to RSPB Otmoor, an area on the map which if anything - looks kind of boring. Consisiting of primarily flooded fields and some reedbeds - what it lacks in looks it easily makes up in sheer quality of wildlife. I was blown away by the resident marsh Harriers who swoop across the reeds on the hunt for food but surely that can't be all I found? The joy of having a patch is watching the environment change as the year progresses. On a recent trip to the forest I came across a stretch of river where I noticed significant Dipper activity, I immediately knew I had to come back to capture them in their natural habitat but I needed a plan. There are several nature reserves dotted around the West Midlands all of which are incredibly popular with local bird watchers and nature lovers. There's nothing like getting out your house and making your way down to the woods. Feel the stress leave your body and breathe in that fresh air. The Wyre Forest is the largest Woodland Nature Reserve in the country and is located in the West Midlands just outside Kidderminster. It's an ancient woodland straight from a fairytale with it's babbling brooks and moss covered trees towering into the sky. It's notable for its many forms of wildlife which is exactly why I made the trip. It's my first time here and I'm on the search for birds and wildlife. In an area so large it can be extremely difficult to find subjects but how do you think I got on? Ladywalk is a nature reserve leased by The West Midlands Bird Club, one of the oldest bird clubs in the country. The site itself is nestled with a loop of the River Tame and features a selection of pools as well as woodland areas. It's the location which really got me into wildlife photography and feels like a second home to me as I used to be a very frequest visitor. It's a hotspot for a variety of woodland and water birds but ultimately this is wildlife photography so nothing is set in stone, one day you may be treated to a wintering Bittern or Spoonbill flying overhead and the next so may have nothing but the old regulars.
