Part 2: LUMIX S5 IIX Internal Codec vs BRAW
A few quick frames comparing the codecs in a backlit situation. In the final comparison I boosted the exposure, lifted the shadows considerably and then brought the highlights back down.
Let's Ride | GoPro Hero 12 Test
Put off buying an action cam due to the image quality and overall I'm pretty content with this little buddy.
ITALY - Rome and la dolce vita | LUMIX S5 IIX and BMPCC 4K
Buon giorno Roma! Some shenanigans from Rome and the countryside. I was accompanied by some close friends and my favorite cameras. Shot on the LUMIX S5 IIX (a good bit with the BM Video Assist for BRAW) and the lovely Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. On the S5 I used my recently acquired Laowa Nanomorph 35MM but a good portion was also shot on the LUMIX S 35MM & 50MM f1.8 lenses. For the BMPCC 4K I only brought along the Meike 16MM T2.2. 00:00 Intro - Buon Giorno Roma 00:34 Part 1 - Soderberg Sightseeing 01:23 Part 2 - Trevi Fountain of Spritzes 03:03 Part 3 - Arrivederci Roma 04:26 Part 4 - La Piscina 06:40 Part 5 - Castel Gandolfo 08:55 Part 6 - Sunset in Zagorolo
LUMIX S5IIX Codec & Blackmagic Raw Comparison | Interiors
Comparing the best internal codec (400Mbps) vs the best ProRes that can be written to SSD (1.6Gbps) vs shooting Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) via a Blackmagic Video Assist 12G. Will have to do another one comparing an exterior scene and something with some more movement happening in frame.
Images of Madrid and Toledo | LUMIX S5 IIX
Montage of clips from a recent trip to Spain. It was very hot. Tech Specs: Everything shot on the S5IIX with the LUMIX 35MM and 50MM f1.8 lenses. All the exterior shots were shot in 5.9k ProRes at 1.9 Gbps to a Samsung T5 drive. As always I used a Tiffen 1/8 BPM and Freewell VND. The interiors were shot in BRAW using the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G. Really impressed with the ProPres quality, at least in the high data rates, though the file sizes are pretty nuts.
Summer Weekends Vol. 2 | LUMIX S5 IIX & BRAW Film Emulation
Lazy days and cotton candy skies. Shot on the LUMIX S5 IIX with a Tiffen BPM 1/8 and Freewell VND. The first few clips were shot in ProRes 5.9K at 1.9Gbps to a Samsung T5. The rest were shot in 5.9K BRAW with the Blackmagic Video Assist. Lenses were the LUMIX 35MM & 50MM f1.8. Graded in Resolve using the FilmUnlimited powergrades.
Film Emulation Color Grade Breakdown | Davinci Resolve
Just a guy drinking some wine and doing a color grade breakdown. This was unscripted and isn't a polished or flashy tutorial but I hope it's helpful. Let me know in the comments if you'd like to see more like this. Vintage Summer Vibes with the LUMIX S5
My continued longing for warm weather led me to pull together this montage of clips from last summer. All shot on the LUMIX S5 with the 20-60MM kit lens, with a Tiffen BPM 1/8 and Freewell VND. About half the clips are with the internal codec and half in 5.9K BRAW with the Blackmagic Video Assist. Went for more of a vintage film emulation vibe in the grade, using the FilmUnlimited powergrades from Juan Melara. Song: "Strawberry Afternoons" by Lonely Benson from Musicbed. Still and Film Emulation in Hawaii with the LUMIX S5 and BRAW
Took my LUMIX S5 and Blackmagic Video Assist on a trip to Hawaii. Though I love my Pocket 4K, I'm finding this to be a great combination for when I want great video quality as well as the ability to shoot stills in a compact package. Video footage was graded using FilmUnlimited powergrades by Juan Melara. I'm loving it so far as it's pretty flexible and doesn't give an overly vintage look. Most clips were shot using the BM Video Assist in 5.9k BRAW at 8:1. A few were using the internal codec. Everything was shot on either the LUMIX S 35mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8 with a BPM 1/8th and Freewell VNDs. Music selected from Musicbed. Images of Quebec Montage | LUMIX S5 Blackmagic BRAW
Shot in BRAW on LUMIX S5 with Blackmagic Video Assist 12G. Been testing out this combination lately and liking the results. It's a bit inconvenient to carry an external monitor around but I really like the image and workflow compared to using the internal codec.
Night Train Ride Through Quebec | LUMIX S5 Blackmagic BRAW
No story, just vibes. Montage from a nighttime train ride from Montreal to Quebec City paired with some vibey music. Shot in BRAW on LUMIX S5 with Blackmagic Video Assist 12G.
The Chapel in the Woods | Thriller Concept Teaser Trailer
Been working on a script for a short film this year and this a little concept piece I put together from some location scouting with some friends. This was shot on a LUMIX S5 and Blackmagic Video Assist in 5.9K BRAW.

the bassist - BMPCC 4K
Shot this last spring on a Sunday afternoon. She said she was going to play a little, I asked if I could film a few frames, she acquiesced so long as I used different audio. Nothing special, in fact I think the whole thing was filmed in 5-10 minutes, but a fun little project that was a good exercise in editing. Looking back now I would probably tweak the grade and soften some of the highlights. Considered doing that now but held back as I think it's both fun and important to see how things progress over time with learning and practice. BMPCC 4K Lumix 25MM f1.7
