Is Bleach Bypass Worth It? Now You Can Actually See
Watch what happens when I reprocess 16mm film that was first bleach bypassed, then bleached, for a true A/B look at this rare effect. This might be the only real bleach bypass comparison ever done (at least on YouTube) using the exact same footage, processed twice. In this experiment, I first ran a roll of Kodak 500T 16mm film through bleach bypass processing (skipping the bleach stage), scanned it, then sent the same negative back through the machine with bleach to see what would happen. The result? A true A/B comparison of bleach bypass vs standard color processing-- same shot, same stock, same conditions. If you’ve ever wondered what bleach bypass really looks like or whether it’s worth trying on your next 16mm or 35mm project, this test shows you what no one else has shown before. Essential tips for shooting on motion picture film (part2/2)
4️⃣ Don’t Trust the Monitor: Some film cameras have video taps for monitoring footage, but these are mainly good for framing, not pulling focus or judging exposure accurately. Using a monitor to base the final image off of could end in poor results! 5️⃣ Lean on Your Light Meter: regardless of how the scene looks to your eyes too, trust your light meter. It’s a reliable guide because it measures the light accurately in your actual shooting environment. ⭐️Bonus Tip: Bring More Light Than You Think You Need. Film NEEDS light to make an image, so don’t shy away from it. I’ve seen film overexposed by five stops and still manage to produce a usable image. Unlike digital cameras that can basically see in the dark now, film has its limits, and severe underexposure can lead to detail loss. My advice? Err on the side of overexposure, be sure you have enough light fixtures, and you won’t find yourself in a situation where things get too dark.If you found this helpful, share with a friend, and follow me for more on film! #filmmaking #filmtips #cinematography #16mmfilm #super16
5 essential tips for shooting on motion picture film
Essential tips for shooting on Motion Picture Film: (part 1/2) 1️⃣ Embrace Spontaneity with a Plan: Don’t miss those ✨magical✨ moments – stock up on film to capture the unexpected. Remember, improvisation can be golden, but it can also cost you if you’re not prepared! 2️⃣ Focus on Focus: 🔍 Details matter, especially on the big screen. Sharpen your focus game with a skilled puller, precise marks, and lots of rehearsals. 3️⃣ Choose Wisely: 🤔 Film demands intentionality. If your project’s experimental, tight on budget, loaded with VFX, or leaves no room for error, consider the digital route to save yourself from unnecessary frustration. Stay tuned for part 2 and share with a friend if you found this helpful 🎥 #FilmmakingTips #shootfilm #cinematography #super16
5 Color Film Stocks from Kodak!
🎥: Kodak offers 5 different color film stocks, each with its own unique characteristics. The ISO value on the stock indicates its sensitivity rating or “speed”. Watch out for that "D" or "T" after the rating, which tells you if it's for Daylight or Tungsten lighting. 1️⃣ Ektachrome: It's a reversal film, meaning you get a POSITIVE image after processing. Expect rich colors and contrast, but keep in mind it has a limited dynamic range. 2️⃣ The other four are NEGATIVE film stocks, giving you an inverted image after processing. These offer a broader latitude of about 13 to 14 stops, but be cautious not to underexpose too much.😎 #KodakFilm #FilmPhotography #CinematographyTips"
Pretty pictures don’t make a good story!
"📽️ Cinematography Wisdom: It's not about pretty pictures, it's about serving the story! DP's role in lighting is all about mood, character, and narrative. Roger Deakins nailed it: 'Pretty pictures alone don't make good movies.' 🎥 #Cinematography #Storytelling #RogerDeakins"
How is 16mm film different from other formats?
For 8mm, think low budget nostalgia, for 35mm, think traditional Hollywood at a premium, and 16mm is the perfect sweet spot in the middle, offering quality and affordability. Which format would you choose?🎞️ #filmmakingtips #film #filmmaker #16mmfilm #35mmfilm #super8
5 things I learned shooting film. #filmtips #16mmfilm
1.Less is More: Film taught me to choose wisely. No endless takes; sometimes just one shot, one chance. 2.Mistakes Happen: Missed focus? Exposure off? Roll with it. Adaptability is key. 3.No 'Perfect' Shot: Embrace imperfection. Focus on storytelling & lighting. Time-saving, epic cinematography! 4.Confidence Grows: There’s no shortcut. Dedication, education, and trial & error build confidence. 5.Limitation Fuels Creativity: Film's precious & limited. Forces us to be our best, every time. Under the Bridge: Fashion Portfolio Shoot on Super 16mm Film
LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to stay up to date on all my adventures in celluloid. Send inquiries to nkosiroma@gmail.com After fellow creative, Josiah, invited me on to shoot a portfolio piece he was directing on 16mm film, I had to say yes. He found a sweet spot underneath a highway overpass which gave us plenty of options for composition. (Check out some of his photos from the shoot on his IG page @josiahroetker). The overcast day gave us predominantly diffused lighting which provided a nice soft source for the skin. We used a mix of Kodak 250D and Ektachrome, purchased from http://mononoawarefilm.com, processed through Spectra film, and scanned through https://thenegative.space. I shot on my Arri SR2 paired with the Canon 8-64mm to reduce time spent swapping lenses. I had to pull focus manually since I couldn’t use a follow focus (forgot my LWS) which proved to be tough while rocking the easy rig. Our stylist, Laura came up with some distinct looks that elevated the production and looked great on film. Her attention to detail is undeniable in her work as a stylist and artist. (IG: @wolfela @laurawolfeart) —And obviously without awesome talent we wouldn’t have anything to shoot at all, so shoutout to the models, who were very down to earth and a pleasure to work with. Color Grading 16mm Film
In this video I'm showing how I like to grade 16mm film. Because I love the natural look of film, correcting the color is often as far as I want to go in the grade, especially for simple videos. For narrative projects I might go with a more pronounced look and have a professional colorist complete the work. LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to stay up to date on all my adventures in celluloid. What Does it Cost to Shoot on Film? | 16mm
In this video I breakdown the three main costs associated with shooting on 16mm film; Raw Stock, Processing and Development, and Scanning. This isn't a comprehensive list of all the options out there and as mentioned in the video, prices will vary depending on factors involved in each step! Forgive the typo on the budget scanning cost-- $0.20 x 400ft at 2K is $80, not $100 :-0 LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to stay updated on when I post new content and feel free to leave a comment on what you'd like to see in future videos!
