Filmed on the Sony A7sii. Color grade and film grain done with @Dehancer. A collection of scenes and moments from my trips to Lebanon over the years. Growing up I used to hear about ‘thin places’ in my faith tradition. Places where the veil between heaven and earth were *thin*. It is in these places that the reality of God’s kingdom and God’s presence were the most tangible and palpable. I used the hear about this concept and what came to mind was a packed suburban auditorium surrounded by people praising God as a 6-figure sound system kept the synth going for hours past the scheduled service time. There might have even been fog and gold dust swirling around the room. In my mind a thin place was a euphoric mountain top experience as high as the heavens were away from earth. But then I went to Lebanon in 2015 and again in 2017 and I realized how wrong my perception of this was. God’s domain was not “up there” in some euphoric disembodied high place. These thin places weren’t located in what would normally be considered affluent or successful or “blessed” places. They can be found in beauty of course (which Lebanon has an abundance of). But they are also found in some Gehenna-like places where the seemingly bottomless depth to human depravity can sometimes reveal the beauty people are capable of. It is in these places where God’s kingdom is most clearly seen. While in Lebanon I saw many thin places. I saw them in my friends who love and serve the very people who once occupied and destroyed their country. I saw them in the tents of Syrian refugees who pleaded with us to take their children home with us to America. I saw them in an Imam who acted a lot more like Jesus than some of the pastors back home. I saw them in a man who was once kidnapped and responded by praying with his captors. I saw them across a country that welcomed me with open arms despite the fact that my country would send tens of billions of dollars in weapons that would be used for the destruction of their homes. I still see them in my friends who have opened up their homes to those displaced by the atrocities around them. I still see them in my friends who choose hope and faith when it seems like there isn’t a reason to have any. Today I am praying for Lebanon and my friends. The receipt for success is surprisingly simple. Yet somehow for creatives it can be a weird dynamic. Often times the goals we set for ourselves are arbitrary and based on someone's achievements rather than the things that will take us to the next step in our life long journey. Lately, I've spent a lot of time processing what it looks like for me to be "successful" as a filmmaker and a creative. It's so easy to get discouraged but when I step back and realize that its about enjoying the journey and not the destination I realize that I'm much happier and much more productive.

After decades of violent conflict, political instability, and exploitation the Democratic Republic of the Congo has become one of the world’s poorest countries. With challenges like Ebola and mineral extraction in the eastern region the DRC faces an uphill battle. Fortunately, it’s also home to some of the most incredible people I’ve had the opportunity to meet. One of these people, Fredy, invited me to travel to the Congo with United for the Future to produce a documentary short about the medical clinic they are building the capital city of Kinshasa. United for the Future is a faith-based non profit in Fresno, CA that partners with schools and churches to connect students with mentors. They are also building a medical clinic in the city where Fredy grew up. They have secured a location, started construction, have equipment donated, and staff lined up. The are waiting for the final funds to finish construction and meet a very significant need. I am truly grateful for the opportunity.
