New Balance and Grivet saw my previous spec work, and decided I could help them out on this promo. Alongside HyperFocus, they approached me to create a promo for a relay race in Memphis, TN, where you get to demo their new Rebel v4's, as well as earn a chance to win a pair of the new Rebel’s. I told them what I could do in the timeframe, and we decided to go for it! To be clear, I knew from the get-go that I wouldn’t be paid, and I wasn’t expecting to! I wanted to make this because I wanted to prove I could make this type of commercial. I've used the Tamron 28-75 G2 for a few months, and I think it's the best value filmmaking lens you can buy for Sony E. Of course, this lens is designed for photographers first, but it still performs admirably for filmmaking. And it may be my favorite one-lens solution. Through the Tamron Lens Utility app, you can switch the lens to linear focus when manually focussing, which is a key component of a proper cinema lens. No, there aren't any hard stops when focussing, but the mechanics are smooth and consistent. The look of the Tamron 28-75 G2 is neutral with modern contrast. When wide open, the lens still has enough micro-contrast and sharpness for my taste. I usually dial down the contrast and sharpness in post, all with good results. At the end of the day, the best lens for me is the one that gets out of the way and allows me to capture what I need and when I need it. I've always preferred prime lenses, and I still want to reach for them first, but the ease of use and practicality of the Tamron has allowed me to get shots quicker than I have before, which is sometimes the most important thing for most shoots. I've learned that I can get the look I want through post and don't have to solely rely on lenses to provide the emotion I want. All footage was graded through Dehancer, with different looks and film emulations applied. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, I wanted to share a short film that briefly covers the surface of a mental health battle I’ve struggled with. The inspiration for this film comes from the daily interactions I believe we all have. Nearly every, “Hey, how are ya?” is met with a, “I’m doing fine. And you?” All the while, a fair amount of us are not doing fine. For my own mental health, I largely ignored it for the vast majority of my life. It wasn’t an intentional decision, just more of something I picked up being around others. I saw other people smiling and waving, so I thought that was the thing to do. I never thought to ignore the emotions that were deeper, simply because not many people even acknowledged that deeper emotions existed. I don’t think we are intentionally hiding from people or our emotions, we just might not be allowing ourselves the time to analyze them. Not everyone you run into needs to know your every thought, nor should every person be trusted with that intimate knowledge. But I do think you owe it to yourself for you to know your own emotions. Awareness of where you are emotionally is definitely not some magic cure, but I think it’s the first step in the right direction. Talk with your people, your family, your community.
