It doesn't get much better than this... Last summer, I spent two weeks in Norway with my dad. He lived there for three years in the mid 90s and I was born there. We decided to go explore a couple new towns, venture to the Lofoten Islands, and of course go back to Stavanger (where my dad lived). Phoenix 200 is out in 120. It's the same film, just in a new format. When this stuff came out in 35mm, we discovered that home scanning usually delivered much better results than lab scans. The same is true with the 120 version. Was able to get my hands on the very rare s82 Close-Up Lens for the 105mm f/2.4 lens for the Pentax 6x7/67/67ii system. This diopter reduces the minimum focusing distance by about half and creates an even shallower depth of field, resulting in some very interesting portraits and images. After making a video about shooting Harman Photo's new 35mm color film stock, Phoenix 200, I received some comments regarding the integrity of the scans I received. I also saw some varying results online, so I thought I'd do some home scans of this film to compare with the lab scans. Now, it's important to note that in the video I made about shooting Phoenix 200, I DID NOT edit my lab scans at all. I wanted to show the images exactly the way I received them from the lab. The results from the lab were pretty in line with the way Harman described the characteristics of the film stock: "quirky, cross-processed vibe." Harman Photo (Ilford) sent me over a couple of rolls of their first ever color film, branded as Harman Phoenix 200. I took these rolls to Hanoi, Vietnam and shot them both while walking around the city one day. It is a contrasty, quirky, punchy, and oddly saturated film with minimal dynamic range. A few weeks ago, I had ventured off for a 2-3 day road trip to northern Washington. Along the way, I met up with Caleb Brown who is an experienced wingsuit pilot, base jumper, and skydiver. I recently went out to eastern Washington to spend a day shooting only black & white film with a red filter. What an incredible trip this was. Lake Ingalls is a breathtakingly beautiful lake nestled beneath Ingalls Peak with stunning views of Mt. Stuart, Washington's sixth highest peak. I got some images that I am really happy with and was pleasantly surprised with how well the long exposures turned out. To cap off the trip, I met a gentleman at the Ingalls Basin area who shed some insight on why he comes to these places alone. It was one of the coolest conversations I've had on any trip. Hey everyone! In this video, I'm scanning 120 and 35mm film at home using the Negative Supply Premium Curated Kit in tandem with Negative Lab Pro. This combo has been absolutely killer for me! I'm very impressed with how quick the process can be with the Negative Supply Kit and the quality of the conversions in Negative Lab Pro. This is a great setup for those looking to bring their film scanning to the next level and introduce an extra level of control to their workflow. The one big gripe I have with this whole setup is the price point of the Negative Supply Premium Curated Kit. Hey everyone! Hiking season is back!! Super stoked to hit the trail this summer and explore more of Washington's beauty. The Cascades and Olympics are on my priority list and I have some really fun trips planned once the snow starts to melt. Until then, enjoy a nice morning hike to Annette Lake. This week, I took the Yakima River Canyon Highway from Ellensburg to Yakima. This beautiful road winds along the Yakima River and offers some incredible views and recreational areas. Without a doubt, the most special video I've had the pleasure of making. I took my dad to one of his favorite places on earth and had him shoot a few rolls of film through my Bronica SQ. This was his first time finishing a roll of film in 20 years. My dad originally got me in to photography and kickstarted my love for film, so to return the favor in a small way meant a lot to me. Bit more of a vlog style video this week as I venture east on I-90 towards Cle Elum, Wa. In this video, I take a trek up to Lake Lillian in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness with my Pentax 67ii. This ended up being a pretty challenging hike, especially with all of the camera gear, but the views and experience was well worth it. In late August, my cousin, friend, and I tackled one of Washington's most iconic hikes: The Enchantments. It was a long 14-hour day consisting of 21 miles of hiking and 12,000 feet of elevation change. I was definitely having doubts about bringing the 16mm camera on this trek because I wanted to keep my pack as light as possible, but I decided to buck up and bring it along and I'm very glad I did. The images in this video are some of my favorites that I've captured and I can't think of a better way to document the wonderment of this region than on this medium. Absolutely stoked to get the first backcountry trip of the season in out at Mason Lake. This is pretty much the only alpine lake not still covered in snow at the moment lol. A homie by the name of Ashton (@ashton.film) recently reached out to me and asked if I'd like to borrow his Fujifilm TX-1 to shoot with. I happily obliged and took the camera on a family outing to Mt. Rainier and put three rolls of Portra 400 through the camera. This was my first time shooting panoramas on film and I definitely made some composing and exposure miscalculations, but overall I am stoked on these results. My inner filmmaker is quite obsessed with the wide format and it appears as though I will need to invest in a panoramic system in the future. It was a very long day of filming and shooting, but one of the best days I've had in a long time. Thanks again to Ashton for making this video possible! I brought my Pentax 6x7 and Bronica SQ with Portra 400 and Portra 800 for later in the evening. It was a great day of shooting, but I was a bit disappointed when I got my scans back as I wasn't too pleased with the colors and detail of the photos. This was my own fault as I decided to shoot in the middle of the day. The Bronica also ended up having a light leak which was unfortunate. Sometimes I think I can get away with shooting in less than ideal lighting because I am using film, but this is clearly not the case. Only thing to do is learn from the mistakes and apply the knowledge next time I go out to shoot. At first, these photos weren't looking too promising, but I was able to work some magic in LR to reduce the grain and get them looking pretty rad! The lab I go to doesn't offer the best quality scans so you'll notice that some of these photos are pretty muddy, but overall I can't complain! Walked away with a few that I'm really stoked on! Before everyone criticizes me for being an idiot... I did research on this spot before and read that the depth was 20 feet. I also watched multiple videos of people jumping this spot. This waterfall has extremely loose rock and sand below, so the depth can change when sand bars form from time to time. I struck a sand bar. Five feet to the right and I would have been fine. EVERY TIME I cliff jump I depth check. This was the first time I decided not to and I obviously learned my lesson. It is always important to take every precaution possible when doing these things. Learn from my mistake. Never stop living your life to the fullest, but always take the steps needed to minimize risk, so you can continue doing what you love. And please, no lectures on how dangerous my lifestyle is. This is what I love to do and I will never stop. I will always be as careful as I can, however.
